A rise in tourist numbers but a decline in spending is the OPPOSITE of what you want if you rely on tourism. It just means a continued heavy negative impact from tourism on the islands, without adequate financial benefit to compensate for that. We see the same thing with tourists from the states, social media & costs have caused a shift from our previous demographic of family tourists who paid for tours, went to nice restaurants, paid for activities and shopped, to now having younger tourists with no families, who are vacationing on a budget, taking advantage of free activities they find posted all over social media, who aren’t paying for tours or activities, who aren’t shopping or going out to eat at nice restaurants. Quantity but a lack of quality, that’s what are tourists are now.
Hawaii hotels (with resort and parking fees) and restaurants are still too expensive even with a slightly favorable exchange rate. Add theft, assault and homeless in Hawaii.
