Something to bare in mind is that in the UK (and through most of Europe I think) you can only drive a manual car if you passed your driving test in one. If you pass your driving test in an automatic vehicle you are limited to automatics which is an important consideration since that would mean you couldn't then drive 80% of the cars on the market. This is changing slowly with the adoption of EV's since they don't need gears in the same way as cars with internal combustion engines.

If u pass your driving test with a manual car in the UK your able to drive both. However if u pass using an automatic then your limited to only driving them instead.

In the Netherlands, we have two types of driver's licenses: one for manual and one for automatic transmissions. The automatic license is mostly for people who can't master manual transmission and for disabled people.
Edit: Someone with a manual license can drive an automatic transmission car, but not vice versa. Those with an automatic license are not permitted to drive manual transmission cars.

When you are used to a manual you really do not think at all about shifting gears but just shift without thinking. For me it really does not matter if I use an automatic or manual its the same. But for people not driving that much and who are used to automatic I understand its initially easier with automatic. With electric cars shifting will not be needed at all in the future. there is really no need to have either an automatic or manual. You just give the electric engine more or less electricity with the gas pedal and there is no need for any gears.

Last summer we took a 30 foot camper from Colorado to California. Being a European I imagined this would be easy since it'd be an automatic transmission. That is... until I hit the Rocky mountains. I'm used to lowering gears when I'm driving down slopes. This being a much larger vehicle than what I'm used to drive in every day life AND the fact that no one at El Monte rv rentals bothered to explain to me there were ways to shift gears manually on this thing made for a very interesting drive 😂. In the end I figured stuff out myself and we had an epic vacation.

Over here in The Netherlands driving an 'automaat' seems to get more and more popular. As per January 1st, 2023 almost 28% of the total car park were automatic cars which was an increase of 7% in comparison to 2022. I drive an automatic car because of the comfort. Overall I drive short distances to more rural areas where traffic is pretty crowded. Operating the stick in that situation very quickly gets annoying.

In the UK there is a separate Automatic Car driving test.
If you pass the test in an automatic, you cannot drive a manual car.
If you pass the standard, manual car test you can drive either.
On British roads, manual makes much more sense due to the unpredictable weather, from blizzards to heat waves, and the terrible state of some roads.
Most British manual cars now have five or six speed boxes, making it very economical to cruise on clear roads at 70mph doing 50 or more miles per Imperial gallon.
Auto cars use 30% more fuel on average than manual when driven in Britain, that is why automatics tend to be luxury cars, whose owners can afford the fuel costs.

Electric cars have no gearbox so don't change gear! The torque is produced evenly throughout the rev range and my MG 4 is insanely fast. It is also extremely easy to drive: I didn't suffer from 'clutch knee' after driving to Manchester from Gloucester, through the slow traffic at Stoke. Superfast charging at Chester services was 12 minutes and cost £23.56.

After watching quite a lot of crash clipsover the years here on UA-cam, I can't help but wonder if not a lot of these freak accidents are due to automatic transmissions.
You know the ones where someone is about to park and when they are to stop instead go full speed right into the wall, or where someone backs out of their driveway and suddenly takes off at 50 mph straight across the street and crash into the neighbor's car.
The gas pedal instead of the brake 🤔

In 2022 85% of newly registered cars in Sweden were automatic, the extra gas consumption is pretty much a moot point in modern cars but 20 years ago they were horribly inefficient. People are even starting to take their licence with automatics. From 12% in 2016 to 31% in 2021. And in Sweden automatic licences are not valid for manual cars, which should be obvious everywhere.

It used to be that autos cost you performance. Not all power reached the wheels because the link was never fixed, which also made for understeer on corner entry. That was long ago.

In Italy until the end of 2009, around 86% of new cars had manual transmission. Then started to be available different kind of transmissions, like the automated manual transmission (robotic gearbox), and CVT for hybrid cars. So, due in particular to the spread of hybrid cars, in 2017 76% of new car had manual transimission, in 2018 73%, in 2020 55% and finally in 2023 only 32% of new cars had manual transmission. So now also subcompact cheap cars have automatic transimssion, and the trend will increase for sure

If you drive an automatic, you can hardly get away if there is a lot of snow, if your car does not want to start you cannot tow it and ensure that it starts in 1st or 2nd gear. and lastly for me personally, trucks are equipped with an automatic transmission here as standard, so after work I'm happy that I can shift gears again and drive home through the winding roads... and of course in the morning.
for people who cannot keep up with things such as shifting gears, paying attention to the road, turning their heads and in the meantime also shifting gears at an intersection.... yes, they are better off driving an automatic, I also think it is a seniors gearbox, only those Duracell cars have an automatic transmission as standard, but a real driver opts for manual transmission
