Igor was a tough player, 4 premierships , too bad they were at Manly 😊 Kurt Sorenson was a tough player , He was mates with a coach of ours & he played some touch footy in our team Back in early 80’s , Good bloke
Not always. Many had jobs organised by their clubs with business' or business people or trades people who supported that club. They were usually given a lot of leeway if they needed time off for injuries or the odd spell.
I had a mate, circa 1970, who played footie, I think for Corrective Services, in an interdepartmental comp. such as used to be popular before employers shunned any association with risk to their employees. He was one of the strongest humans that I have ever known, no fear. He told of opposing Ryan in one of their games. He agreed with you regarding Ryan at that time, and no doubt, would do so to this day. The big bloke would have only been ticking over, too, I imagine... (Corrective Services lost, of course...😄)
All tough as tough can get. Would not want to tackle any of them Legends. As a young boy I knew Dallas Donnelly in Homebush. He was built like a rock. Crusher was tough. Pricey. Randall. Dont make em like that anymore. 💪
They were all tougher AND fitter. When you consider that we're not full time professionals ( train 2 nights a week, office job during the day) and there was no interchange, nor was there a bunker or wired ref's and touch judges catching the dirty stuff....yep..they were tougher.
@@glenchapman3899 nice one were was that in the shire the thing I liked about him was he didn't take crap and he had skill it was a pity about Dane Sorenson he had alot of skill also but they used him as a battering ram which was. Also his job but he should of been able to play his own game also
@@joelmonkley6177 Believe it or not it was in the carpark at Lidcombe oval. Our cars pulled up next to each other. Chatted for about 5-10 minutes. He was just wearing a training t shirt and shorts and the muscle definition was insane. Aside from that he came across as a very pleasant well grounded young man. If I remember wasn't there a third brother, only played a little first grade?
Bob the Bear O'reilly (Easts / Parra) rates Boyd highly in terms of toughness. Said Boyd dished out plenty, also copped plenty, was in the game all the way to the end. You need such players in a tough game like league
No doubt that there has always been some tough men play rugby league, but this video is a piss take, yeah? Not one of those tackles shown there would rival at least 30 tackles you would see in every NRL game any weekend in 2023.
@@tomytiger20 Yep, was there in the 70’s. I think you missed my point. Referencing any of what I saw in thais particular video, in comparison. To todays tacking, not much to see there. And to respond to your next question, I’m not talking about players knocking each others heads of with blatant high shots, I’m talking about fair, hard defence and attack. But maybe I’m wrong.
@@paulmcgeechan8503 good to hear you were there to experience those days as well as in the current day. Yep your points are all perfectly valid mate. Keep up the comments & I’ll try and keep posting more old footy vids for everyone.
30 tackles in 2023 most forwards are only on the park for spells of 15 mins of course you can tackle your guts out for that time period knowing your going to be subbed off in the 70,s 80 only time you went off was on a stretcher or sent off the two players mostly shown on the video was Dane and Kurt 1979 season every team wanted to take their heads off because apart from Bill Noonan they were the only kiwis playing in Sydney they booth were playing first grade in New Zealand as 15 year olds. If you think there's nothing in the tackling style your wrong if you say you watched the game in the 70s. Kurt was a ball and all tackler while Dane would go around the legs or where ever neither were dirty players unlike many in Sydney at the time but neither took any shit. Those tackles in the 70s are real hard and fair. only wish the game was played like that today
Kurt Sorensen - what a legend!!
Great footage and interview with another legend of the game
Great video. Anyone who is a consistent NRL first grader is a tough cookie.
Unforgettable Sharkies days , there was no bar more crowded on footy days , best time at work 😊
What a great story . Two hard men sharing some knowledge .
This is Gold !!
Noel Kelly the boy from Goodna
they used to have pictures of Noel up on the walls of the Goodna chemist.
Terry Randall back then what about HIM ????🤔?????
This rating was based on one particular season only. Randell made his real mark a couple seasons earlier I think?
Noel Kelly picking a Manly player?? Never. Talking to Mossop is enough.
Igor was a tough player, 4 premierships , too bad they were at Manly 😊 Kurt Sorenson was a tough player , He was mates with a coach of ours & he played some touch footy in our team Back in early 80’s , Good bloke
Les Boyd, Dallas Donnelly
Great footage. Man, I miss the old days when the league was super tough and frail men couldn't play the game...Lol
There's no "frail" men playing the game today either my friend!!!!
@@jeffkeeley4594 Lol. True dat
These Blokes got up on Monday morning and went to work. They were tough boys

@@warrenmilford6848 That's true of the stars. But a lot of the regular first graders had jobs
The toughest of the all the tough players who has graced Rugby League in the last 115 years has been
Kevin ( “ Kandos”. )Ryan.
Bar none.

Kevin Ryan my fave, Peter Diamond way scary,do wonder how they woulda gone with Vince Kararlis a wild Pom
Too Cool!!
Onya Rex.
Was that gibbs from oberon?
George Piggins - South’s Hooker in the late 60-70’s was pretty tough.
Paul Khan, Cronulla prop, a great ballplayer.
All tough as tough can get.
Would not want to tackle any of them Legends.
As a young boy I knew Dallas Donnelly in Homebush.
He was built like a rock.
Crusher was tough.
Pricey.
Randall.
Dont make em like that anymore.
💪
Be an honour to be punched by Noel
There's a difference between tough and dirty. Some players were both.
Les Boyd, Steve Kneen, Bob Cooper, Rod Reddy, Tom Raudonikis.
They were all tougher AND fitter. When you consider that we're not full time professionals ( train 2 nights a week, office job during the day) and there was no interchange, nor was there a bunker or wired ref's and touch judges catching the dirty stuff....yep..they were tougher.
Arthur Beetson?
He was up there no doubt, but as with Randall, probably not as fearsome as in previous years.
It was amazing watching Artie Beetson offload to team mates.
Don't see anywhere enough of it these days.
WHAT about ray price
i thought ray price would get a mention only small but hard
Keep an eye out for him in my next upload over the next week or so titled “….Player with the Most Attacking Flair”
No doubt kurt Sorensen was so tough so was his brother nice to see Noel Kelly giving him that accolade a real champ
I met Kurt once in his playing days. I swear his whole body was one giant muscle.

rod morris, a queenslander playing for nsw.
Royce ayliffe
Tough but probably more worthy of being in a different category (ie roughest?)along with Cooper, Donnelly & Boyd.
Geoff Robinson??
What about the wild man Robbo from the dogs
..... and their still acting for the penalty.
Volkanowski says hi.
How cool,no political correctness,,tough as those two
Lol HARD OLD DUDES ✊✊
LEGENDS! 🤙🤙
You’re not tough if you dish out cheap shots like Les Boyd.

Just simple quick question- how keen a rugby league supporter (or player) were you during the 1970s?

Agree. Those tackles were just par for the course, even then. They could have found much better ones.
To today’s time they have half the season off for a scratch on their little finger lol 😂 get em off me
