You are right about books, they seldom tell of these techniques, even when artist make them, they usually are talking more to the layout of the vehicles involved, and less about the physical processes. The few historical documents about artist techniques are gleaned through the eyes of others, and not much help if they aren't the your style... lol.

You’re right about Lucien Freud - his colors make everything look like vomit and decay - probably intended to do just that.
