I worked on this film, as in helped repair and clean the original negatives and comp prints for storage at the Australian National Film & Sound Archive about 20 years ago.
Richard Hewson was the arranger for this song. It's the reason it sounds so amazing with the orchestra and funk elements. He worked with the Beatles and Paul McCartney in their later years. I'm sure you can hear the influence.
A very good movie for the time, and 3 of this crew (Roger Ward, Hugh Keays Byrne, and Grant Page (Stunts)) would all be reunited in 1979 for roles in Mad Max. Still to this day one of the best AU movies made (considering it had a very small budget) miss to 70's and 80's. Cheers.
a Australian/Hong Kong co-production during the Kung Fu film craze . Produced by Raymond Chow , starring Jimmy Wang Yu , Samo Hung , Aussie actors George Lazrnby , Rebecca Gilling , BIll Hunter , Ros Spiers etc . Filmed in NT (Uluru) , Nsw & Hong Kong ... classic car chase scene on the Blue Mountains .
We need a team-up of The Guy from Harlem with The Man from Hong Kong in a Rush Hour style film. It could start the PFPCU. The Person from Place cinematic universe. It would make trillions.
Man this version of the song is so good, and I can't find this version outside of the movie. If you listen to the single version, you can tell it is much different: a bit more abrasive and not as orchestral.
That group of government housing apartments at 1.21 are now about 2 kms inland from the habour due to reclaimation, HK would have been a great place to live back in the mid-70s

@simonmoves This was suppose to be a Bruce Lee movie but wasn't for obvious reasons, I'm sure it would be a lot more mainstream if he had lived to do it.
@nishima The original sounded a little more disco and pop and it was just the band Jigsaw whereas this version seems to have a whole orchestra, you can hear the strings and horn section.
Jimmy really pissed off everyone on set in Australia, the stunt coordinator even offered to belt the crap out of him to the director, watch doco Ozplotation
no, not crew, I cleaned the original negatives for archival storage about 20 years after the film was made, that was about 18 years ago. Where can i find a torrent for this film? cheers.
this version that starts a bit like 'theme from shaft' with the orchestral backing is fcking Ace! is it on mp3 or the soundtrack, or does it only appear here on the film intro anyone know?
@sigzor85 - Really? I have only ever heard of it referred to as The Man From Hong Kong, even in the "Danger Freaks" documentary about Grant Page, which was more or less a "making of" doco for this movie.
But Jimmy was "special branch" so how can anybody whip him? Ha ha ha. I saw this movie back in 1975 and it was then titled " the Dragon flies" so I never understood why they changed the tittle. It was full of controversy
Love the song - the movie wasn't so great. BTW, as a shooter, did anyone notice that JWY closes his eyes every time he fires at the target? A definite no-no when I was being taught how to shoot. Anyway, still think the song is GREAT!

Wow this version is better than the original. I love it
Absolute classic. Bookended by some real aussie-ness. Love the laconic... 'shiiiiit' at the end.
A true classic (but underrated) Aussie movie.
70s, good time in Oz :)
Never heard of this movie, but know the song very well!
Nostalgic teen years, love from Kerala, India
これは遠い昔にテレビ録画した日本語吹替映像をまだ持っているな。映像を落としたDVD-Rを今も時々見る時があるよ。
Love how Wang Yu and martial arts students all run to the hang-glider but the armed uniformed police do nothing.
this song is better than the best Kanye West, Justin Bieber could offer.

Theme song is a classic they don't make em like these now.
*adds this to my list of movies to watch*. It's too bad we never got the series of Bruce Lee/George Lazenby movies that was originally planned.
Thanks for posting this - most appreciated!!!

It would make trillions.
Thank you so much for posting this. Really awesome soundtrack and movie.

It's available - look for the Golden Best edition.
Totally agree. The cut / version here is this song + at least 50%.
And that’s ALOT
That group of government housing apartments at 1.21 are now about 2 kms inland from the habour due to reclaimation, HK would have been a great place to live back in the mid-70s
It certainly was, sad to see the state of affairs there now.
this is a great kung fu movie, a classic.

this is music
Gold😂
@nishima it had echo on the first word of each line. "Down down down down, down like a stone"
this version that starts a bit like 'theme from shaft' with the orchestral backing is fcking Ace! is it on mp3 or the soundtrack, or does it only appear here on the film intro anyone know?
@nishima I think he just means the original song in general.
@sigzor85 - Really? I have only ever heard of it referred to as The Man From Hong Kong, even in the "Danger Freaks" documentary about Grant Page, which was more or less a "making of" doco for this movie.

映画のタイトルが「香港から来た男」。ウ~ン、日本で売ろうとすると全然おもしろくない、ジャイアント馬場が「主題歌だけ買おう、タイトル変えて」と思うわね。商売だもんで。
This guy's skill level is laughable Bruce Lee doing a Green Hornet episode has better choreography.
