Hi Colin, not many people would be brave enough to share their first attempt at carving, it looks good to me, I hope we see the finished version. Thanks again.
My grandfather told me a story one time. He was a boy, this would have been in the late 1800's, and went to an old time carnival. There was a tent with a big sign that said "Learn The Secret Of Life". He paid his fare and went in. An old man was sitting, whittling. He said, "Whittle away from yourself boys and you'll never get cut." I still laugh when I think of this.
You speak very humbly and positively about yourself. I really enjoyed this type of video and the anomaly of viewing a master as novice. It taught me a lot about how to approach a project.
Hello Colin , That is a brilliant first attempt! There are lots of carving videos out there but to watch someone who hasn't carved before was all the more interesting. As always a great video from you mate and I hope that you can come back and do a follow up on the spoon. Take care and stay safe , Bram
just started watching and that's hilarious that they sent bandaids along! gonna keep watching, i've always wanted to get into wood carving and i love your attitude :)
Well done! It's always nice seeing BeaverCraft tools used for various wood carving projects. You've made a great spoon as for the first time. Keep up the good work!
They looked like BeaverCraft tools, so I followed your link to see. Yup, indeed they are. BeaverCraft makes some good little carving tools for less than Flexcut and some of the others. I’ve been extremely happy with my BeaverCraft knives and gouges. Nothing is more satisfying than wood carving.
Great video, as usual. Mom has been after me to make her some wooden spoons. Thanks for taking away my excuse of not knowing how to start. Always informative and entertaining. Thank you.
Just a tip for beginers if you want to do your own spoon knife you need just to sharpen old round wrench. It's good enouhg and can be more handy than you think especialy more than one side edge spoon knives.
Hi Colin I enjoyed your video. I`m not into carving but watch all your vids. Just one point I would like to make, never pull a sharp knife or chisel for that matter towards your body, always turn the material round and work away from yourself. (Just a safety tip).
Good day sir... I'm new here and would like to learn wood carving Though I'm not good at art, I think carving is interesting so I decided to learn it. And I want to carve something for my crush as birthday present for her birthday 😊
This video is truly interesting😍 You made me encourage to do wood carving. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. I think I should consider this new learning, great work Mr. Colin!
Hi Colin, That looks great and congratulations on showing everyone your first attempt at wood carving. Will there be a follow up to show the completed spoon? Cheers, Huw
I started carving after an operation. I have done over a hundred now its great ;-) Well worth getting into loved the carving you shown very nice. Yes wear a glove ;-) I have band aids and super glue at my side always as I carve lol. Yes bass is the best i started with pine. I hope you do more You will like it ;-)
Another great video. I love watching your channel. I’ve been doing a lot of hand carving and you’ve Inspired me to start a UA-cam channel, hopefully mine will be as inspiring as yours. All the best Andy
Last Friday I received exactly the same wood carving set. (without the band-aid set, though). Now I need to obtain some dry basswood. What dimensions is the block of basswood you started with to make the spoon? (mainly the thickness)
This was a fun video. I hope that you do a few 'learning to carve' videos. I think that this would help those of us out here who want to get into simple carving.
Very interesting video. Thanks for sharing. For sure it's a type of woodworking what anybody can start to do without the need of having a (well equipped) shop. The chisel-set/toolset, an anti-skid-mat and a kitchen table should do. As a left-hander I wonder if some of the chisels/tools exist also in a left-handed version.
I watched professional carver Mary May on Roy Underhill's Woodwright Shop and she said that pro woodcarvers learn to work with either hand. It's partly because of what Colin just experienced about grain runout, and partly so they don't have to spend a lot of time reorienting either themselves or the wood. I make no claim to being a woodcarver, I'm just passing along what she said. In another episode, Roy had on an older woman carver who he noted had made a mistake because 2 of the pieces she was working on were supposed to be identical, but weren't. She said, "Carvers don't make mistakes, they just change the design." Good words for all craftsmen (craftspeople?) to live by.
What kind of wood are you using? Do you have to soak wood to make it peel like that or can I just go outside and pick up any stick I like and carve away at it? Please and thank you! 😊🙂
When i was a kid i remember this guy picked up a log that was supposed to be for firewood than sat on a stump with only a knife he carved away all day... he created for me a really detailed hunting knife out of that... Of course it got taken away when i brought it to school :( but the dude was a legend one of the coolest memories i could have had as a child and i couldn't even guess he was spending his entire day to create such a nice memory for me.
I recently got some wood carving tools from Bevercraft and trust me they are sharp I could have used the band-aids. Thankfully nothing serious but you really do need to be careful.
Both the right handed set and the left handed carving tool set are not available on Amazon and they don't know if they are going to get more in. Any thoughts on a different set that you might recommend Colin? Great video -- thanks
Nice job on the spoon. Definitely not bad for your first time. Thanks for the great videos Colin. Where did you get the tool kit, and roughly how much was it? Thanks again
Hey can you draw out a dragon model on a price of wood please? I’m trying to make a dragon right now but I can’t seem to get the drawing of it right so the outcome might come out bad
I bought a carving kit a few years ago and I tried and failed miserably. The kit came with tools and a couple of small wood blocks. The tools would not even cut into the wood and I have up.
hello from Denmark,,, i suggest for knowledge about avoiding the wood to split apart during drying, and for inspiration,, look into videos about traditional finish wood carving of a special cup,, called a ,,kuksa,, myself im very fashinating by these videos on youtube about kuksa,,,
you can tell he's a power tool wood workers. No idea how to sharpen that hook knife and that the green buffing compound goes on the leather strop. Those planes hanging on the wall must just for show
Hi Colin, not many people would be brave enough to share their first attempt at carving, it looks good to me, I hope we see the finished version. Thanks again.

Im a 21 year old dad, and i find joy in this watching, ima get my kit soon too

The bandaids are a nice touch to complete the kit haha 😂
That green stick is rouge for the strop. Good start!
Thanks for sharing. Great video. 👍I have wanted to try wood carving for a long time. Have a wonderful weekend. 🌴🌸🙂
