Terrific review. I really appreciate it when people go to these levels to turn out a solid review. Your videography is excellent and the information is useful. It has helped me in deciding which audio interface to choose! Keep up the good work.
Thank you, Mr. Krause, for taking the time to do these videos. Your delivery is very clear and your information is extremely useful. I am almost 50 years old and my only time editing audio samples was when i used Fasttracker 2 on the Amiga around 1986-. (That was at a time when it cost a fortune just to sample 12 seconds of 44.1k quality sound on an Akai s1000). Things are much better today.......
I just looked up the Akai s1000 and it looks like it has been a really nice machine back in the days. And I agree, audio recording is much simpler now. Thank you for your nice comment, I'm glad you enjoy my videos :)
My dad was a guitar player and set up a home studio in our house when I was growing up in the late 90's-early 2000's. With an 16 track Tascam MS-16 tape machine. 1 inch tape at 15 ips. Later on when sound-cards became more available he built a studio PC and used some obscure A/D sound cards via I think PCI or some other expansion bus. Not sure why he did that when I think in the early 2000's Digidesign had consumer interfaces, but I digress. I am unfortunately unable to ask him today. Your comment reminds me of all of this because when I inherited all of his stuff and inevitably got into audio. And other than all of the vintage guitars and amps, looking at all of the recording gear made me realize just how rough y'all had it back then. With everything we have today, I can fairly readily achieve what some would call a "pro-sounding" record with fairly little work and money in comparison to the insanity which is cutting tape and having to use some shoddy pre-amps from some random branded 16 channel console from the 1980's which looks like it was used more for budget live sound than anything else. It definitely wasn't no SSL. Looked vintage though. And was British. Noisy preamps though. What I find the most hilarious is how so many people say that "analog is better than digital" with a straight face. It's like yea... If you have hundreds of thousands of dollars at your disposal.. Maybe. All I know is, that everyone back in the day who was stuck using analog-gear would kill to have what we have access to today. And not only for the convenience. The sound too. Everyone back then was obsessed with getting the "most accurate/high fidelity" signal. Which compared to tape, digital is. Edit: Now I know why he didn't buy something like a Digi 001. They cost $2000 a pop back then.
Sincere thanks for posting this review. It is very informative, and I compliment you for the quality of the production. Your presentation is very professional, very well done.
No complaints about the unit's functionality, it worked perfectly until two weeks after the one-year warranty expired, at which point it started emitting a howl during recording that renders it unusable. Steinberg Support put me through the inevitable drill of updating drivers and firmware, which did nothing to help, then declared the unit dead and ineligible for replacement. The support rep mentioned that he'd heard of this problem, and I found a few posts in forums describing similar issues. They referred me to a repair shop, which I called. The shop never heard of or worked on Steinberg equipment and their bench fee for diagnosis would equal the cost of the unit. Bottom line: Steinberg does not stand behind their product. A real engineering company would replace the unit and take mine back to the shop to determine cause of failure and fix any design flaws or choose more reliable components.
@@BrosBrothersLP Sorry, you don't believe that it's broken? I promise you it is. Honestly, the events in my comment are accurately described, both the problem and the timing, as well as the maker's responses.
I used to own this interface. From my experience the preamp was superior to that of the Behringer UMC22, which I had also owned. I ended up selling it, though, because the headphone output was too low. The knob was all the way to the right and it was still rather quiet. I now use a Yamaha MG06X, which has the same quality preamp as the UR22 but a much louder monitor line.
Output power for headphones seems to be a problem on some interfaces. I want to look into that a little more, maybe I can find out which interfaces have the best headphone amps.
@@JulianKrause now you can get the UR22C which is apparently a lot louder, in my case I might upgrade from the UR22MKII for £10 (if I sell the old one)
EIN -123.3dBU @ 150 Ohms. The UA Mkii is -127dBU, but they don't list the Ohm load which would b every helpful. My standalone preamp is -132 db with 50 ohm load... sick! All of these are excellent options today.
Note also that you may run into problems recortding guitars for high gain amp sims, the noise floor is clearly audible with several tested amp sims (neural dsp, bias, mercuriall). Unfortunately I didnt know this, learn from my mistake.
I actually have the UR44 by Steinberg. Don't know if its mkII. Are the pre's noisy? Yes a little, but usually not noticeable in most applications including dynamic mics. The box is a workhorse though and its pre's do have a certain...mojo. Your review is great. I am glued to these episodes. Just wanted to add a little perspective. Cheers.
Hi first of all thank you very much indeed for this excellent video. And then a question related to these figures 5:21 I have to measure noise with a laptop from some preamps outputs (with inputs shorted) So i am looking for a not expensive usb soundcard with a very low own noise. Do you think that the Behringer could be a good option ? and i guess i will have to connect the preamps outs to the mic in ? have you measure the sound cards noise with mic inputs shorted ? that would give the real sound card noise ? i am very obsessed by noise measurements these days. Very. Thanks a lot again. Kind regards, gino
Hi, very nice video! I only have a question. How is the volume in the headphones while direct monitoring? I heard that is very low and, as a saxophonist, direct monitoring is very important for me so I would like to hear how it really performs before buying one. Thanks.
I have recently bought urc22. Installing the software can be a challenge to say the least unless you are a computer geek. The Steinberg is well built and I am pleased with it. I am going through a steep learning curve with Cubase but it is an amazing program? I would be tempted to stick with the Scarlett probably?
I've just bought the ur22mkII and a brand new Asus laptop (i5+8gb+256ssd+win10) and the audio interface has audio drops every 10 seconds or so, I'm very sick about It and I'm returning It to buy Another one. Somebody could help me with some advice ? The web is full of people with my problem and no answers ..
Hey! Have you tried fiddling with the buffer size / latency settings? Sometimes you get glitches (with any interface) if your sample size is too small. I have one of these interfaces too and it works usually very well, but the preamps are noisy (compared to some other interfaces, but in everyday use it's excellent) and the headphone output is not strong enough to drive high impedance headphones. I would recommend you look at Motu M2 which is not much more expensive and has incredible specs (but also some instability issues). Or any interface from Focusrite.
@Ricardo Visconti // There is an excellent link to optimizing your Windows machine to use audio interfaces. Even though this article is for Win7, 99% of this info still applies: support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/articles/207359245-Optimising-your-PC-for-audio-on-Windows-7
Thanks for the first decent review of this interface I have found. Great job! One question about the EIN figures for the three units tested - if these are at ‘max gain’ as you noted then I would expect the measured EIN to be dependent on max gain, did you account for the actual gain in the EIN comparison? That is say if the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 has 4.9dB less gain than the UR22mkII then would both measure the same EIN by your test? (No I don’t work for Steinberg.)
Hey, good question! Even though the EIN is measured at the maximum gain setting the resulting number excludes the gain from the equation. So, you can directly compare the EIN between different devices without having to worry about the preamp gain. Cheers!
Thanks for the review! I would be interested in having the output quality measured on different audio interfaces as I've experienced some that introduce hiss on the output to monitors.
Hey, that's an interesting topic. I have not yet tested anything regarding the output of audio interfaces. If I find the time, I will have a look at it in the future. But don't hold your breath ;)
Thanks for bringing out real world performances in your reviews. Could you please comment about using AT2020 with this? Can low noise speech recording be achieved with a lot of silence in between spoken words ( using UR22 MKII + AT2020 Combo) or red box is the route to take?? Regards
OK, so I have the Steinberg 242 interface and I am wondering if It would benefit me to get the dbx channel strip? I use a AT2020 condenser mic and record vocals for hip hop, RnB
Really depends on what your needs. If you want to record an already processed sound which you don't need to tweak much further in post, then the 286s might be a good choice. On the other hand, if you want to record the raw sound of your mic because you want to have the most flexibility in post production, then you don't need a 286s.
Hi quick question: Do all interfaces sound the same? Because i have a recording of teh ur22 but that unit is dead now..I bought the Beringer one, and i cant seem to get the same recording with it..Everything is same but it just dont sound as good..Kinda more bassier and less mids....Thanks
What is the dB difference (or whatever difference) between the Line/Mic input ans switching to the Instrument setting? I have a TASCAM US-144 MKII and wonder about this setting.
hi julian, thanks for sharing! please help me out, iam so confuse to choose betwen Ur22 c and Ssl 2. iam using ipad air 2 (garageband/cubasis) and i need to make music and saxophone cover. which one the best for me?
Nice Video. I bought two of this together. One for me, another for one of my senior friend. both are facing same problem, it mutes audio for 3\4 seconds , whenever I touch the mouse or . It happens while watching/ listening on Vlc, Windows media player, recording , checking video on youtube. any suggestion how to overcome ?
Great review. You forgot to mentioned that the headphone impedance is very low on this device from what ive read online, at only around the 32ohm mark.
@@JulianKrause ok my undertaking is that this higher the impedance, the higher the quality. ie a 32ohm is meant for devices like smartphones and 250ohm is meant for high end audio specific devices with aplifiers. ua-cam.com/video/pFTdtyRxBUs/v-deo.html. Thats why you need to buy the 32ohm DT 770 Pro for using with your smartphone and the 250ohm for these kind of devices. Which means that 32ohm on this devices isnt a good thing really, as you now have to use a headphone designed for low end smartphones.
@@fuzzripear You are mixing some things up here. The impedance of the headphones and the output impedance of the interface are two different things. Generally speaking, you want the output impedance of the interface to be much lower than the impedance of the headphones.
www.steinberg.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=112014 some say that 250ohm will work, while others say that you need an amp, like the magni 3 for example. I guess 80ohm is the best/safest middle choice, without the need for an amp.
Hi, first of all great video! I have a noob question, if i get this interface and a condenser mic, will i need a power cable for the mic? or do i just need to plug the mic in to the interface? I dont know anything about those mics, thanks!
Hey, you just need an XLR cable to connect the mic to the interface. You then need to turn on phantom power on the interface to power the microphone and that's it ;)
Great review! I am sitting here about to do some new investments as I go into music making in the older years. I will base my new setup around Maschine MK3, Complete Control S49, my macbook, some mics and instruments, and an interface. Have been close getting the UR22mk2, but then a friend recommended going for something like the Apollo Twin mk2, which comes in at a larger price. I can justify the difference if there's an obvious gain in terms of quality, and I am now a bit afraid of disturbance in the lower register since I will be doing a lot of work there. What would you with experience recommend me to go in terms of interface? I somehow like to idea to have a midi in/out, perhaps with little future needs.. I plan to have a mobil setup that I can use for both studio and live recording and performance. Thank you!
really nice review. love the effort u put in. but got one request. im thinking about to buy an audio interface. im between the roland rubix / umc204hd and the ur 22mk2. im using the ai mostly for ableton and i need midi in and out for syntheziser. and i have to say nobody really covers this topic about qualitity of the sound who comes out. i know moitor aswell are important but still and the performance in a daw or so. would be interesting to see who performs best. scarlett 2i2 is out cause lack of midi. i know about the 2i4...
If the quality of the output is important to you, I would recommend the UR22MKII. I'm currently testing the outputs on different interfaces and the Behringers aren't as good as the competition.
im just so worried im doing something wrong, i got a condenser mic (AT2020), volume on Windows all on 100% as it should be, still i have to use alot 2-1 point before the gain, so about 4 o'clock. This seems pretty high, considering it's not a dynamic mic...
Another great review. What do you loudness normalize your youtube vids to? Good to know cause it gives us additional insight into the noise floor. Thx!
@@JulianKrause Thanks, Julian. Given that, the audio was cleaner than expected with the SM57 given the noise floor of the preamp. Not bad at all and certainly containable with some iZoptope DeNoise to polish it off.
That's a bit disappointing to hear about the preamp noise spec and comparisons to other top interfaces. Since I use the UR22 with the DBX 286s, and thus the interface preamp is set to zero, I suppose it's somewhat of a non-issue. Maybe Steinberg will address this noise issue in the next version of the UR22, MKIII? Thanks for all the time you put into this review.
Hey, don't feel too bad about it. The preamps are still ok, just not ultra low noise. And in your situation the preamp noise doesn't matter anyways beacuse you use the 286s. Overall the UR22 is still a nice interface and if it works for you that's great.
Talking about the pre amp noise performance, how does this affect a dynamic mic setup with the load on an external amp like: sm7b into cloudlifter into dbx 286 at 40ish db gain into the ur22mkii (either left at 0 or 2 ticks to reach the 18 dbfs)? Would a more quiet interface help with noise in this situation?
No not really. The first preamp in the audio chain is the main source of noise. If you use a Cloudlifter, which is essentially a very low noise preamp in front of the UR22MKII. Same goes with the dbx 286s, it has better preamps than the UR22MKII, so it can reduce the preamp noise. When you use a preamp in front of any interface, the noise performance of the built-in preamp becomes irrelevant.
@@JulianKrause Thanks for the clarification! One thing that always bothered me with this setup is that I still have to crank up the dbx more than I think I should. To make the 0 db light from time to time I have to set the gain to 45-47 db with the cloudlifter connected. I left it on the said 40ish now and raise the interface gain 2-3 dots to reach -18 dbfs.
Nice video, thank you for making the measurements. I have a question regarding my UR44, which is probably just a bigger interface with the same parts used. I get a very high noise in my opinion while having a guitar plugged in on ch 1 (Hi Z input) and with the gain almost all the way up. Is that normal for this interface?
Can this audio interface also used as standalone device without pc connected by powering it with an USB power adapter? I'm looking for an interface that can be used both with and without pc (as microphone phantom preamp).
Would you recommend this over the 2i2? I am looking for a soundcard at this range to mostly record my DI and mix and the package of good preamps+Cubase AI seems very nice. My issue is that I don't have experience with either of them or the Audient and I feel like the noize level and the latency even with the lowest buffer size could be an issue. Also reading that some people's UR22mkII had issues within 1-2 years but that could happen with anything.
Hard to say, the 2i2 and the UR22 MKII are both good interfaces. If you are on windows, then I would recommend the UR22MKII. The drivers are more stable than the 2i2s.
i have been using this interface since couple of years but i am facing a terrible noise sometimes even in the sane branded condensed microphone, and another type of noise even i face in the monitor headphones sounds like screaming of rats which annoys me a lot . can you please help me out advising me any solution ? specially i feel that the screaming noise with the output signals may be a configuration problem. it exist even if i play youtube videos
Hello Julian Krause. I was wondering if i can connect this soundcard to my controller (DDJ-400) and how i do it?. My controller records 24bit/44.1 KHZ and also i want to know if it is worth buyng el steinberg ur22 mkII, what i mean is if the difference in sound quality and recording is noticeably better than my controller?. Thanks :D
I listened to the recording of silence with the SM7B, with my headphone amp's gain maxed out, and I thought the noise floor was barely perceptible. The Steinberg's interface seems to be respectable in terms of performance, in that regard. There are definitely much noisier ADC's out there.
Is it better to take ur-rt2 or ur22c? I mostly record vocals, keyboards and guitars. I'm wondering if these dspFX from ur22c appear in ProTools as a plug in or just in Cubase?
If only I had come across your video before I ordered mine. I was a silly person that was somehow not considering Behringer by principle, not trusting its cheapness. And here it turns out that what I thought was an overly noisy preamp really is an unnecessarily noisy preamp, and that I could have gotten a better product if only I had paid less. The irony of this situation is delightful. Welp, still in the return period, might as well make use out of that privilege... and swap for the UMC202HD, it seems. I take it that there's no real discernible difference in the quality of the preamp sound between the two, beside their noisiness? Also, could you say if the Behringer UMC202HD is my best bet at lowest selfnoise audio interface (in non-superpricey range), or are there, perhaps, other and better options for someone a bit obsessed with high quality signal? edit: Audient ID4 seems even more alluring than the Behringer, but I am not entirely sure how to interpret the fact that it has slightly worse noisefloor (-126 dBu) but better dynamic range (114 dB). Would that be altogether better and producing louder, clearer sound with more negligible background noise?
Yes, the UMC202HD has lower noise preamps compared to the UR22 MKII. And yes it is the best bang for buck in terms of preamp noise performance. But keep in mind that preamp performance isn't everything. Things like ease of use and build quality are also important. If you use condenser mics, the preamp performance isn't critical anyways. So, it really depends on what you need. Both devices can record great sounding audio.
It's really too bad that these older reviews don't include the headphone output measurements. I have the UR22mkII and whenever I listen to A/B tests of various microphones or interfaces I don't hear any differences as long as my headphones (Hifiman HE400i 2020) are plugged into the headphone output of the interface (I can if I use a dedicated DAC and headphone amp). For podcasts, video calls and so on, the interface is fine, although I'd probably go for the slightly cheaper Audient EVO 4, just don't expect to do any critical listening using its headphone output.
Hey, I made a separate video for headphone output comparison. The UR22 MKII is also included: ua-cam.com/video/xLShpyzwvJs/v-deo.html The distortion on the UR22 MKII is quite low but it has a high output impedance and relatively low output power.
@@JulianKrause I found the video, plus most of your recent videos do include the headphone measurements so it's easy to compare. It's too bad it's impossible to update older videos :-)
Hey thanks for the video. Do you know if its worth upgrading from a presonus audiobox USB in terms of preamp noise? Its the black model, not the 96 version. I don't know how to test its noise, and if its any worse or better than the Behringer or Steinberg 22. Would you happen to know if the preamp on the audiobox is similar in noise and gain, or if it would be worth switching it for one of these you mentioned in your video?
I don't know the preamp noise of the original presonus audiobox but I have the feeling the Steinberg isn't a big step up. Are you experiencing excessive noise with dynamic microphones?
@@JulianKrause yeah i have to turn my guitar amp WAY up so its workable. Even my at2020 condenser gets noise if I dont speak loud or close to the mic. I was thinking maybe trying a fethead or cloudlifter out, and getting the behringer?
@@itos191 If you get a high amount of noise even with a condenser mic, that doesn't sound very good. I can recommend the UMC202HD. It has very low noise preamps, you don't even need a Cloudlifter or FetHead. It only has one drawback: With direct monitoring the audio from channel 1 is only on the left in your headphones. And channel 2 on the right. If you frequently use direct monitoring, this can be a bit irritating.
The UR22C has the same preamps as the UR22MKII, so from a preamp perspective it is not an upgrade. You can use a Shuer SM57 with the UR22MKII but you might hear some slight noise in the background. You can hear the amount of noise you can exepct at 6:22.
Thank you so much Sir... I've a doubt Sir... The moment I plug in the microphone and start recording my stuff, I keep hearing noise in the headphones... Can u please help me to get the problem solved Sir? I've got UR 22 mk 2. Shall b waiting for ur reply Sir...

OK, so for what of GAIN value of did You measure the max noise (-123,3dBu)? Are You sure that all of these audio interfeaces have the same GAIN on maximum potentiometer right turn?
Hey, good question. On different interfaces the maximum gain setting will have a different amount of gain. But the EIN measurement takes this into account and completely eliminates gain from equation. These values are directly comparable. Cheers!
@@monter6794 Hey, the gain is measured with a known reference signal. In my case -60dBu coming from a Prism Sound dScope M1. The signal is fed into the interface with the gain up all the way and then I measure the resulting signal amplitude. I stated the maximum system gain in the video at 07:23. You can find the same measurement for the Behringer in its video.
I'm having some issues with this interface, which I haven't been able to solve yet. I'm using a condenser microphone (Audiotechnica AT2020) and cubase for recording and it's working flawlessly. The problem is when I use the same mic for skype, discord, messenger call etc. , or other softwares like obs Studio or audacity, or even when I turn the mix knob to the left, I experience a noise which can be ignored with great difficulty. Any help would be welcomed.

I guess i'm a little late, but it drives 250Ohm Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro w/o a problem, tho i'd prefer a little bit more volume overhead. If i turn the volume knob to the max i can hear very loud bass getting distorted. My suggestion - use external amp for high-impedance headphones.
Hey there... does someone can help me with my issue. None helped me from steinberg... I used that card In my 15years old laptop with no problems. Well I built a new desktop now, i7700k 48ram, samsung evo ssd e.t.c well the sound through headphones cames for 10 seconds and goes for 10 seconds... I tried many solutions : reinstall drivers, reinstall windows, try another windows , powered hub and many other options. The issue is still here.... please someone to help me... 2 weeks now I am trying to fix it.... no solution....
Hey, not really. The bigger the buffer size the higher the latency. You want to use a small buffer size for low latency. But if the buffer size gets to small you can get artifacts like crackling in your audio. So, you want to strike a balance and find the smallest buffer size which still gives you stable audio.
Damn. You’re really upping your game and including so much useful information. Loving the videos.
Much appreciated, this video took me quite some time to make. Thanks again Bandrew!!!

@drunkfebreze I chose the Tascam US-2x2
Sir which is Best is Best for Window ?
UR 22 or Presonus 24C

Sorry but i dont believe you. Things dont break exactly after a warranty period also there should be 2 year warranty so somethings fishy
@@BrosBrothersLP Sorry, you don't believe that it's broken? I promise you it is. Honestly, the events in my comment are accurately described, both the problem and the timing, as well as the maker's responses.

Totally, for condenser mics it is a very good interface.
does it require power for active monitor speakers using xlr cables?
No, you only need to power the active monitors.
Thanks, was currently looking for an interface in those price range really useful informations
Very good review, much appreciated.
Great review! Thank you.
Rode AI-1 is one of the best options for a cheap interface has a reasonably powerful headphone output.
@@JulianKrause now you can get the UR22C which is apparently a lot louder, in my case I might upgrade from the UR22MKII for £10 (if I sell the old one)
Could be the noice floor lower ir you use the alternative external power source input instead of the usb power source?
EIN -123.3dBU @ 150 Ohms. The UA Mkii is -127dBU, but they don't list the Ohm load which would b every helpful. My standalone preamp is -132 db with 50 ohm load... sick! All of these are excellent options today.
Note also that you may run into problems recortding guitars for high gain amp sims, the noise floor is clearly audible with several tested amp sims (neural dsp, bias, mercuriall). Unfortunately I didnt know this, learn from my mistake.
What interface would you recommend for use with neural dsp?
I actually have the UR44 by Steinberg. Don't know if its mkII. Are the pre's noisy? Yes a little, but usually not noticeable in most applications including dynamic mics. The box is a workhorse though and its pre's do have a certain...mojo. Your review is great. I am glued to these episodes. Just wanted to add a little perspective. Cheers.
Hi first of all thank you very much indeed for this excellent video. And then a question related to these figures 5:21
I have to measure noise with a laptop from some preamps outputs (with inputs shorted) So i am looking for a not expensive usb soundcard with a very low own noise.
Thanks.

Great video. Pls can you review the ad/ da conversion also. I have an onyx black Bird and wondering which one does a good conversion job
Did you test the unit using both power sources? there is supposed to be a difference in noise with non usb being quieter
How about a review of the TASCAM US-2x2 USB Audio Interface?
Thanks for the info.
Thanks for bringing out real world performances in your reviews.
Could you please comment about using AT2020 with this? Can low noise speech recording be achieved with a lot of silence in between spoken words ( using UR22 MKII + AT2020 Combo) or red box is the route to take??

OK, so I have the Steinberg 242 interface and I am wondering if It would benefit me to get the dbx channel strip? I use a AT2020 condenser mic and record vocals for hip hop, RnB
Really depends on what your needs. If you want to record an already processed sound which you don't need to tweak much further in post, then the 286s might be a good choice. On the other hand, if you want to record the raw sound of your mic because you want to have the most flexibility in post production, then you don't need a 286s.
I want a buy sound card 2i2 or ur 22 ?
Hi quick question: Do all interfaces sound the same? Because i have a recording of teh ur22 but that unit is dead now..I bought the Beringer one, and i cant seem to get the same recording with it..Everything is same but it just dont sound as good..Kinda more bassier and less mids....Thanks

Which one should i choose? UR22C or scarlett 2i2 3rd gen ?
Great review. You forgot to mentioned that the headphone impedance is very low on this device from what ive read online, at only around the 32ohm mark.
I couldn't find this spec anywhere. If that is true, that's pretty good. The impedance of the headphone should be as low as possible.
@@JulianKrause ok i see, thanks. So would these be able to drive 250ohm headphones or would i need to go down to 80ohm or even 32?
www.steinberg.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=112014 some say that 250ohm will work, while others say that you need an amp, like the magni 3 for example.
You then need to turn on phantom power on the interface to power the microphone and that's it ;)
@@JulianKrause Thanks for the response. Is that for both condenser and dynamic mics? or the phantom power is only for the condenser?
I gave away my UR22 because of the noise and use a DBX286 and Yamaha MG10xu mixer.

Thank you!
thank you
really nice review. love the effort u put in. but got one request. im thinking about to buy an audio interface. im between the roland rubix / umc204hd and the ur 22mk2. im using the ai mostly for ableton and i need midi in and out for syntheziser. and i have to say nobody really covers this topic about qualitity of the sound who comes out. i know moitor aswell are important but still and the performance in a daw or so. would be interesting to see who performs best. scarlett 2i2 is out cause lack of midi. i know about the 2i4...
If the quality of the output is important to you, I would recommend the UR22MKII. I'm currently testing the outputs on different interfaces and the Behringers aren't as good as the competition.
sehr gutes review. danke!

Das stimmt. Das liegt daran, dass mir noch das Equipment fehlt um den Kopfhörerausgang zu testen. Kommt aber hoffentlich auch noch irgendwann.
im just so worried im doing something wrong, i got a condenser mic (AT2020), volume on Windows all on 100% as it should be, still i have to use alot 2-1 point before the gain, so about 4 o'clock. This seems pretty high, considering it's not a dynamic mic...
Another great review. What do you loudness normalize your youtube vids to? Good to know cause it gives us additional insight into the noise floor. Thx!
Hi Ray, I normalize my audio to -16 LUFS in stereo or -19 LUFS for mono.
@@JulianKrause Thanks, Julian. Given that, the audio was cleaner than expected with the SM57 given the noise floor of the preamp. Not bad at all and certainly containable with some iZoptope DeNoise to polish it off.
@@RayOrtega Yeah, I think as long as you keep the mic close and you don't use an SM7B the preamps are ok.
Sounds strange, do you have another guitar to try with the interface? Maybe it's the pickup in the guitar.
Julian I will try with another guitar and see if the noise is still there.
Can this audio interface also used as standalone device without pc connected by powering it with an USB power adapter?
I'm looking for an interface that can be used both with and without pc (as microphone phantom preamp).
Da Qoraxxx it can but mix knob is in mono..but it could be moded to stereo
@@ivanmaskov Oh well that's no problem, I'm planning to only use 1 mic, so that's mono anyways.
Thanks for the info.

My controller records 24bit/44.1 KHZ and also i want to know if it is worth buyng el steinberg ur22 mkII,

Hey, highly unlikely that there would be any difference in sound and with your controller you don't need an additional audio interface.
@@JulianKrause Thank you :D
I listened to the recording of silence with the SM7B, with my headphone amp's gain maxed out, and I thought the noise floor was barely perceptible. The Steinberg's interface seems to be respectable in terms of performance, in that regard. There are definitely much noisier ADC's out there.
So is the SM7B ok in this without an extra preamp?
I have the ur242 & a sm57 I know those feels, preamps that sound really good but are as loud as a rooster.
Is it better to take ur-rt2 or ur22c? I mostly record vocals, keyboards and guitars. I'm wondering if these dspFX from ur22c appear in ProTools as a plug in or just in Cubase?
what did you buy and are you happy
@@maidel2178 ur-rt2! Excellent and cheap...
@@maidel2178 UR-RT2. Yes, I bought it. Excellent audio interface for little money
Looks like all nichocon Fg caps... good.
hp input impedance of this audio interface?
The UR22 MKII is also included: ua-cam.com/video/xLShpyzwvJs/v-deo.html
The distortion on the UR22 MKII is quite low but it has a high output impedance and relatively low output power.
@@JulianKrause I found the video, plus most of your recent videos do include the headphone measurements so it's easy to compare. It's too bad it's impossible to update older videos :-)
Julian, this or the 2i2? Replacing my 2nd Gen Solo
I don't think that either of these will give you a big improvement. I would personally go for the Motu M2.

Hallo Julian,
does it have loopback? can i press play on a youtube video and record that audio into my daw?
Who is better than Steingberg Ur22mk2 or ur22c
MOTU M2 ;)
Thanks
I'm a noob at this, but I thought the bigger the buffer size the better?
Hey, not really. The bigger the buffer size the higher the latency. You want to use a small buffer size for low latency. But if the buffer size gets to small you can get artifacts like crackling in your audio. So, you want to strike a balance and find the smallest buffer size which still gives you stable audio.
