Much smoother and quite easy after a bit of practice. Thanks!!!

If you use a lighter on the end of the needle, that makes threading easier , obviously you have to be a bit careful you don't burn your hands/fly line.

That is a great tip, and one we have used. Maybe we should do a more advanced version of this showing that, as there is no doubt the hole is easier to manage once heated. Thanks for the idea.

Should you add a touch of super glue at the end so the core doesn't absorb water?

Some people do, but the knot tightens down so well it stops any water going up the core

Will water not seep into that hole you made with the needle when fished and will that then affect the floating properties of the line?

    • @RIOPRODUCTS
      @RIOPRODUCTS  9 років тому +1

+indee a limited amount of water might seep in, but the plastic coating usually shrinks back so tight around the leader, that there will be certainly less than an exposed fly line tip, where the capillary action would suck water up the core...

Ok thank you very much. Any tips on how to protect an exposed floating line so that it can still function properly?

Odds are your leader line will cinch down tight enough to prevent water from soaking in past where it loops are...only the tag end of the fly line should soak up any water...a tiny bit of some kind of Silicon/Rubber adhesive should seal it totally off if your that concerned.
I'll take the risk cause this miniature knot leaves the line as straight as possible :)

This is the best knot for attaching the leader to the fly line. This is the best method I have seen, usually struggling to get the butt of the leader up through the fly line. Used to get liquid PVC to finish and smooth the know out - anybody know where to get some?

Sorry, we've asked around here at RIO, and nobody knows where to get liquid PVC, but it sounds like a great addition.

How about a small ammt of superglue Or head cement?

I've seen the needle used but then instead of a knot a dab of super glue. I like the concept but don't know how reliable the connection would be.

A lot of anglers swear by the super glue knot, but you do need to use the waterproof kind of super glue.

No... on the water you do a quick nail knot. (I have needles tucked into a flybox for this). In the shop (or kitchen table) you do a needle nail knot!!!
      Very slick method!
      👍🏼
      Tight lines everyone!!!

This would be good for backing, but not for the leader, especially where we fish in Hawaii. The coral trashes leaders very quickly, I go throught 3-5 leaders a year.

That is why you cut the leader off to about 6 inches and tie a prefecton loop in the leader and then girth hitch in the leader.
