    Yep. My partner laid off at 52... 2 years later, still nothing apart from 1.5 months contract work. I think hes given up. Life has been shit since 2020. I'm sick of the media and politicians banging on about economic inactivity of over 50s like it's their fault. The employers are discriminating against over 50s 😡

    58 yrs old and I got made redundant last October from the e-commerce sector, I was a Senior Programme Manager. It took me until July to find another role but I made the decision to go into the public sector and do a slightly different role where my skills fitted but I wasn’t involved in delivery as it’s soul destroying. Pay is a lot less but it’s not terrible and a lot less stress. LinkedIn is a waste of time as are agencies and other job sites… apply directly via company websites or give them a call even if something isn’t advertised. Try and remain positive, which, from experience is a challenge. Good luck

    I had the same situation till I bit the bullet and applied for a job in a care home. It's tough work but you'll never be out of work again. Eventually, it led me to me working in supported homes and that led me to working in a Special Needs School which ended up being the best job I've ever had. You have to change your expectations.

    Sorry you were let go. You are not alone in this; my own life is not much different. This is what works for me to maintain sanity and find some happiness in what can be a stressful time. a) looking for work regularly, but not every day. Looking every day can depressing and results in too much of 'the same thing' b) apply for jobs that are imperfect matches - one never knows what the employer sees - and they may have more latitude than they let on c) go for a walk every day d) read most days, and get the mind away from the internet for a while, and enjoy nature e) apply for survival jobs since its good to keep up routine, add to the finances, and do some networking f) don't be too hard on myself.

    The truth is that the jobs market is shrinking, although Governments like to tell people that there are more people in work now than there have ever been. Ghost jobs creates the illusion that work is avaialble and out there, which results in unemployed people questioning their skills, abilities and self worth. In my opinion the rapid increase of insecure work is a result of Globalisation. AI will also reduce employment opportunities over the next ten years. Society should be questioning why we have record numbers of people going to universities and racking up huge debts, who then graduate and end up working in the gig economy. If people need multiple jobs or income streams just to survive, society is on a very slippery slope. I wish you well in your search for permenent work.

    I’ve worked for the CS for over 20 years and can attest to fact that the advertised jobs are real. They will do their utmost to recruit from within their existing resource first so if they advertise out it will have been a very considered decision to do so. I would advise even if you see a temporary post that’s suitable to apply for it because if you’re good at your job (especially HL IT roles), the CS in my experience will try to hold onto you. Once you’re ’in’ and make contacts those people will advise you of potential new postings and advice on how to apply more effectively and if your new work examples are from the CS then even better. Additionally I personally don’t think they age discriminate- they are ethical on that front in my 20 years of being with them it’s nice to see that new recruits could be anywhere from 18-60! Also yes definitely don’t waffle in your applications and keep them tight and tailored. I’ve helped on recruitment exercises in the past and it’s all about the *outcomes* of your examples and the *impacts* made. Anyway I’ll shut up now haha. Good luck!

I was given a days notice for meeting in which I was dismissed. Funnily I had a meeting with HR 2 days before that and there was NO mention of any issues they had with me. I suspect I was taken on to do some mundane admin work with the lure of the proper work coming later. They even messed around with my pay so my claim for unemployment benefit was delayed and I struggled with no money for nearly 2 months

Many don't learn English, coin in overtime and only ever about 3% English tops in some of these large companies, always looking for ways to oust you out even if u get a temp job in them, it's real eye opener and very corrupt, same in care sector, food places, many industries, it's British not welcome and foreign managers who have already been in these places 5-10 years, they recruit mainly their own. I've had 7 jobs in last year, they suck. Honestly, I believe there's a ticking time bomb in that industry with AI advancing rapidly. Office jobs, as well as roles in banks and government where people work from home, are on borrowed time. These positions will soon be automated, with no need for people to sit behind desks anymore. In my opinion, it would be wise to diversify and explore a career where your skill set is more unique, as these jobs are oversaturated and becoming increasingly obsolete.

    Similar situation to me. I was given a 3 month contract now cut short to 2 months I finish next week. They are also cost cutting, board meeting Tuesday and Wednesday they announce redundancies. I am actually happy as the role is a HUGE stress, it was a crap handover, no notes, and manager sending me messages "Has this been done?" and it was not covered in the handover, just constant stress, I don't need it. Told the agency I want minimum 6 month commitment and if its a case where the person leaving is going quickly with no notes, forget it, best contract was when I was supporting someone who had too much work, being left alone to do it all after a shit handover is not good for your mental health. I am not worried, agent will keep looking for me, plenty to do around the house, and holidays planned, perhaps permanently.

    Civil service in the UK is not an easy option. There is massive interference from 'on high' and departments are micromanaged, with a lot of internal politics. Getting a job is also difficult as they prefer to promote from within, even for externally advertised roles.

      Well as someone that’s worked there for 20 years untrue. They ‘prefer’ the best person for the job and micromanaging can occur in private industry also. It’s also very rare people are ‘let go’ lol that’s just scaremongering. The CS is massive and easily absorbs staff whose jobs have changed or if it no longer exists. If someone is let go in my 20 years experience it’s because they’re bad at their job and trust me you have to be awfully bad to get fired from the CS due to the strength of the TU and the department doing everything legally and by the book.

Lots of bus companies have training programmes in place and always advertise for trainee drivers. I worked for Arriva previously and can recommend their training. I know you've decided on a change of direction i.e going for civil service jobs rather than contract but if you're stuck for video ideas would you consider talking about the process you did as a contractor to find contracts i.e what you called the hustle? I'm a 52 year old contractor and would be interesting/educational to hear what others do, what they found worked and what didn't. Cheers and best of luck finding that civil service position.

  • @Alien8_P1
    @Alien8_P1 2 дні тому +10

    I can understand why a contractor would be let go first (I'm a contractor myself) due to the higher pay rate, but as they are also losing another permanent member of staff, was there not an opportunity to stay with the company as a full-time employee?
    And the UK doctor situation...the government have purposely imported doctors and nurses from other countries who will work for less money and poorer work conditions (my partner is an NHS nurse), so planned. Also, Blair and his "friends" have also stated that AI is going to replace the majority of GP's in the not too distant future. I cynically wonder if that's why the GP surgeries and appointment times are an absolute mess, "cui bono"?

    • @johnsenior478

      Wife a nurse, daughter a paramedic. Overseas recruitment - same in teaching - is to fill vacancies due to every Govt since the 80’s making every public service job seem less and less appealing to ensure shortages that are being filled by private companies- from agencies to ambulances. Different for Doctors which seems to be more of a buyers market…but also due to budget restrictions and the marketisation of GP services - as well as chemists being able to seek employment as GPs ( WTAF!!) etc. As a retired person my sympathy is with everyone looking for work when corporations, bent politicians and billionaires will do literally anything to fund their next super yacht or rocket to the moon.

    The problem with civil service is the appalling pay and the total absence of benefits. The pension is held up as a great benefit, but it is tied to state pension age which I think devalues it massively as a benefit. Aside from the pension, there is basically nothing (unless you value season ticket loans and joke benefits like that). Compare that to good private sector roles where you can get higher base pay, bonus schemes, stock options, private medical, strong employer pension contributions (10%+), etc. I'd recommend looking at large private sector companies (retail banks etc) where you still stand a chance of being considered after 30-40 years of age... and avoiding the trendy (shit) little tech companies who basically won't entertain you if you are over 30. Apply direct to companies and do not rely on recruitment consultants, who were once useful but have basically become a total waste of time.

    • @MrBobsmith34
      @MrBobsmith34 2 дні тому +1

      I don't agree about the pension. In a sense all pensions are linked to state retirement age because of tax treatment of early withdrawals and the civil service is no less flexible than most private schemes. The actuarial reduction rates for taking pension early are actually more generous in the civil service than most private sector schemes Employer contribution rates are almost 30% and because its defined benefits not contributions you are not exposed to market risk. To me the pension is a great benefit. There also the point that defined benefits are effectively undervalued when the size of total pot is assessed for tax purposes. If I had a standard private sector scheme I need to save well over 1 million in my pot to get the retirement I want which would complicate my tax affairs. I work in the civil service and I need to earn at least a additional £25-30K if I move to a standard defined contributions private sector scheme. An issue of course is that to gain full advantage of pension you need to join relatively young and build up years. In terms of other benefits I also argue that the leave at 5PM culture and the decent holidays are benefits.

    Civil Service has been good for me. Yeah, they don’t pay the greatest but steady pay/benefits & internal job postings that the public never sees. Lateral transfers into other agencies across state governments that want people but already in the system. Makes it easier, faster to get you onboard with them. Got on with a Sheriff’s office & got access to a free gym & free hot meal every night. If I hang in there for 8 years I’ll be vested for a 2nd pension 🥳🥳

You are doing nothing wrong. Don't blame yourself, blame them. The way I dealt with it was to take it as a blessing and see the benefits of more time for me, albeit at the same time a cost in changed lifestyle. I realise this is less practical for some than others, but at the least, do not blame yourself. This experience is too common. I was disappointed the CIMA did not seem to do much to cover the topic. I wish you all the best. It is a certainty you CAN do the jobs advertised. You know what you can do. I chose the 'I'm retiring early' option. Not necessarily what everyone wants to do.
