  • What does the future of the high street look like? Bringing together voices, memories and the inventive ideas of a local community in Southend-on-Sea, this short film catalogues the public consciousness around how we can learn to adapt and build a better future in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Exploring the importance for public space to be experienced and constructed collaboratively, the film takes as its subject the past and present condition of a high street in transition. Collaging together imagery of architecture, tracking shots and a series of creative responses from participants, ‘S for Southend’ is a collective vision for reimagining the future of Southend High Street.

Keddies, Yorke Road Market (especially Gumbbies) and the chalk & cheese pub at the bottom of the precinct were my favourite jaunts. And of course, Roots Hall the home of football.

I'm mostly Rayleigh born and bred but for ten years I've lived in Southend. This is a pretty realistic good amount of opinions .. but to survive here especially down YORK ROAD you have to be that tiger.

Very sad to see Southend town ... no comparison to Chelmsford, which is lively, lots of shops, market, lovely hanging plants and loads of cheap parking! Southend should look and learn at Chelmsford.

We used to have a brilliant night life ,most tastes were catered for, our art scene was envied, there was plenty of work offices factories gardens etc, then it has been dismantled slowy , so it is a sad run down town with many people being priced out of their homes, gentrification, shame had many good times when i was younger, time to leave after 46 years

What we need is a decent, permanent indoor market, or tow, for food and artisans, other towns have markets, we have one on a thursday, weather permitting, but it is very small

The Royals used to be "quite good" when it first opened ...I remember it being a vibrant place with restaurants below it was more "open" plan somehow around 1989 -ish ..what on Earth have they done to it ..it's dead.

Great film. It's a very long high street, and this treatment suits that long walk perfectly. I'm still baffled that cars were ever allowed to come into such close proximity to pedestrians, criss-crossing the way they do...

Remember it used to have a road going all the way down it .. it was pedestrianised (paved over mostly) in the ..70's. I don't think that was a very good idea
