I think you're absolutely right when you talk about letting kids pick up books they want in school rather than making everyone read the same books. To this day, I am ashamed to say I hate Pride and Prejudice because I was made to read it in school - I genuinely think I would have loved it if I had picked it up on my own, but at the time, I had to put down a book I was enjoying to read it.

I love reading, yet the 15 minutes of daily required reading in grade school was my least favorite homework. This last year has changed, but I also always did the bare minimum when it came to assigned reading. For any and all books.

@@Jasperkitty12809 I know what you mean, I’m the type of person who will read less frequently, but when I do, I read a lot, so the arbitrary 15 minutes seemed to be really jerky. When you couple that with a book you don’t like, it feels like the worst thing ever

Totally agree with you about The Name of the Wind. I kept hearing how "amazing" and "well-written" it was, and knew it couldn't meet the hype. And just hearing about it sounded like all the generic fantasy tropes rolled into one. I was very reluctant to give it a read. But it absolutely blew me away. And that means a lot coming from me, because I hate, hate, hate Mary Sue (Stu?) characters (which Kvothe totally is) but I still managed to love it. Also agree that the second book isn't as good, especially the second half which was just digression after digression of Mary Sue being Mary Sue, but it still managed to captivate me enough to finish it in just a few sittings. I ate up those two books, and the Auri novella, in less than a week (finished yesterday). Now, of course, I'm regretting it. Reminding myself why I avoided this series for so long. I didn't want to have to sit and wait for YEARS (decades maybe) for the series to be wrapped up. But here we are. Hope it was worth it...

Love these kind of videos! My school system didn't make us read classics all that much either (except for Tristan and Iseult - which I remember not liking at all - and Of Mice and Men, which really moved me... but didn't when I read it as an adult. ._.). I read my very first classic after watching Les Misérables (the 2012 version with Hugh Jackman). Fortunately, it was an abridged version (I would have given up for sure otherwise!). I loved it so much and it opened a whole new world to me. I mostly read the most popular YA of my time (Harry Potter, Warriors by Erin Hunter, Twilight, Hunger Games, Divergent...) and I was mainly reading for escapism. It has drastically changed today: I read mainly to learn more about other people's experiences (and that can be achieved in fiction through the themes explored). Reading has enriched my life in so many ways, and I wouldn't have known it if I hadn't given some genres a chance. :)

I saw a play of Ocean at the End of the Lane and it was amazing. I haven't read the book but I have been meaning to. Its rare to find a story so rich with imagination and fantasy while also being so grounded at times. The play does so well to show the protagonists relationship with his father and sister and show the real world problems that they all have and how he escapes it. I think mystery around all the sort of magical stuff is also brilliant. The ending and beginning has an emotional touch (I won't say what emotion(s)) that is just brilliant. I need to read the book.

You're so right about the whole system of book reading in school. When I was in high school I hated reading because I was forced to read books I then thought were boring and it put me off reading, a lot of them where classic Croatian authors that I loved later on in life, but back then I only wanted to read fantasy and adventure books also mostly by Croatian authors, my favorites were Ivan Kusan and Anto Gardas, I think Ivan Kusan has a few that were translated to English if you wanna try and find it :) We should let kids chose more as long as they are reading. Recently I've been trying to read more books in English just to try and broaden my vocabulary a bit, that's how I've stumbled on your channel looking for recommendations. New subscriber here :)

Merphy, I really really liked this video. The topic of flipping expectations fascinates me, and I love your examples and your rationales. And I can't help smiling watching you bask in the glow of your love of reading (even if you hated some of the books about which you talked). Well-done!

Alway love to hear you talk about Neil Gaiman. :)
I have the problem that I sometimes try to get a lot of information and reviews about a book and then have (too) high hopes for it; so I understand how "Anna and the French Kiss" could trick you.

I thought I didn’t like fantasy, but kept hearing everyone rave about Sanderson. I started with Mistborn (I’ve only read the first two so far) & they’re AMAZING! I don’t typically enjoy hyped books, but these lived up to the hype 100%.
I’m waiting for The Ocean at the End of the Land to come in at the library. I’ve read a few Gaiman books, but haven’t enjoyed them. You keep raving about that book, so I’m going to give him another try 😊

I actually recently read Fredrick Backman's And every morning the way home gets longer and longer because you praised it so much. And I just want to say: THANK YOU! I adore this book and it actually became my second favorite book of all time, I just cried my eyes out and I'm so happy I read it. So thanks for the recommendation :)

I decided to give Fredrick Backman a go after hearing your recommendation and the only one in the library I could find was A Man Called Ove. I don't really know what I thought I would think of it going in but I sure didn't expect to love as much as I do. I'm looking forward to giving more of his books a go.

I read Wuthering Heights for a class this semester and it's one of the few books I've been assigned for a class I actually enjoyed reading. I think it does a fantastic job exploring the ways our own personal experiences can help shape who we are as people, and all the characters feel believable and realistic

I loved Ocean at the end of the Lane a lot because if you want to, you can see the fantasy aspects as coping mechanisms through a childs mind for things like child abuse and step parents and death...gave me a Pans Labyrinth feel to it.

it is really interesting that ANYONE would recommend a Bachman book as a starter into King. King himself has said that Bachman was like an alter ego and had a different writing style. He even describes it as if someone else wrote for him and he just got to read it. so, whoever told you that was rude lol
