      It wasn’t a bad attempt at a remake, and Ayoade was a pretty good host for the most parts. The biggest issue was that it was really really repetitive. The contestants didn’t get to choose their tasks and were given the same challenges week in week out, Richard would make the same jokes every week, and it just got very old very fast.

    • @fenceup07944931177
      @fenceup07944931177 11 днів тому

      I think the hand came about because, Richard O' Brien would often grab the contestants by the hand and race them to the next trial. Ayoade just didn't want to touch them.

    • @Lones555
      @Lones555 11 днів тому +2

      @@tehpickle1250 I think the main problem with it was the original had teams made purely from people who worked together and their incompetence shone through gloriously, not being able to solve ridiculously simple problems whilst each member of their team shouted meaningless instructions at them at the same time adding to the confusion. The remake had friendship groups who were just there for fun and the "spotlight" of being on TV, playing up to the camera. It threw out the dynamic.

    Richard hosts a genuine game show with members of the public called ‘The Crystal maze’. I like it. It used to be hosted by richard o brien ( of the rocky horror picture show). Teams of work colleagues ( as an example) compete against other teams by completing different physical tasks. The tasks are set in a variety of themed areas. For each task successfuly completed, the team is awarded with a crystal.

    The four girls and the umbrella were from The Crystal Maze which is a British game show devised by Jacques Antoine, based upon his format for the French game show Fort Boyard, and produced for Channel 4.
    The first four series and three specials were hosted by Richard O'Brien, he wrote the musical stage show The Rocky Horror Show in 1973, which has since remained in continuous production. He also co-wrote the screenplay along with director Jim Sharman for the film adaptation, The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), and appeared on-screen as Riff Raff.

    The show is The Crystal Maze; it was a famous game show in the U.K. in the late 80s early 90s and was originally hosted by an eccentric and charismatic chap named Richard O’Brien; he is world famous for being the creator of the Rocky Horror Show starting Tim Curry & Susan Sarandon. One of the most financially lucrative productions of all time, it cost him 1.4m to make & made 170m at the box office & continues to gross into the billions today in Broadway productions in NYC, West End productions in London, and theatre districts in Vienna, Athens, Toronto, Buenos Aires, Chicago, Paris, Milan, Tokyo, Beijing, Melbourne, Edinburgh, & more.
    The show was rebooted in 2016 & they tried to get charismatic hosts similar to O’Brien to host the show. They originally went with Steven Merchant; who whilst being a great comedy writer - is not a performer, he doesn’t do stand up comedy, and is socially awkward.
    It flopped hard.
    Then they tried Richard Ayoade with Adam Buxton adding cameos; it was actually watchable this time because the two guys actually had stage presence & natural charisma.
    But it still sucked. It was one of those shows that people watched generally for Richard O’Brien and it would never be the same without him.
    The general premise is that a team of contestants navigate a “maze”, competing in various games to try to win crystals. Crystals correspond to time in the final challenge, so the more cystals won, the better their chances of winning the grand prize.
    It was a decent attempt by Ayoade to revive the show but nothing was gonna save it.

    The clip with the mask and the ones with "Roy" and the snow globe were both travel man. The formula is basically that him and his guest visit a place and he takes them to do a mixture of unusual things and maybe more traditional things etc... It's pretty laid back but he's had some great guests to share the experiences with.

    6:36 is from Was It Something I Said which deserves a reaction, only one series but has Richard as a regular and very much worth a watch, this is the first episode, all of the uncut episodes are on UA-cam.

    Richard Ayoade has a thing about bodily contact so hence the hand on a stick when he was doing The Crystal Maze. So he didn't actually have to lead anyone by his real hand.

    OK, so first off, yes, watch Travel Man. Put simply, it's Richard Ayoade and a fresh guest each episode reviewing a weekend away in different cities across the world. Dead easy watching, very funny and you and Queen Boomer would both love it.
    Also, I know you like wacky comedy, and it doesn't get wackier than Garth Mahrengi's Dark Place. It's a short show, with one series at 6 episodes long. It was written by Matt Holness but heavily features Richard Ayoade and Matt Berry (Douglas from IT Crowd). It's an old show but that just adds to the appeal. It is easily the craziest show i've ever seen. And you might be glad to know that the whole series is on UA-cam for free (or at least it was in the USA and I believe it still is.)

    Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace is a must must must watch for you and Mrs Boomer. 1 season of 6 episodes (may only be 5 due to UA-cam copyright), so it’ll be such an easy watch. If you liked IT Crowd then this is a must.

    The Crystal Maze is a game show on Channel 4 from the early 90s and rebooted with Richard Ayoade in 2017. The object is to win as many games as possible to win crystals for time in the Crystal Dome game in the end and a better chance of a prize. If you fail to get out of a game room in your time limit, you get locked in and getting out will cost you a crystal. It’s number 1 on the top 10 UK game shows countdown on WatchMojoUK and it’s definitely worth checking out. I do prefer the original series with Richard O’Brien and Ed Tudor-Pole though.

    If you watch Travel Man, don't expect an all-out comedy travel show like 'An Idiot Abroad'. It's very much a genuine travel documentary series first, with light humour being the cherry on top (as opposed to the other way around like A.I.A). That being said, it is highly entertaining, I just don't want you to be disappointed going in with the wrong expectations. Also know that Ayoade leaves after series 9 (replaced with Joe Lycett)
