Protean Modular Takedown Blaster Overview

- After months of beta testing and on-and-off work, Protean drops today! The spiritual successor to the Gryphon, Protean carries over the layout and handling into a modular system with components that can be swapped out in minutes, all without any additional tools. Compatible with any full-sized wheel configuration, both 130s and 180s, a variety of stock options, and more down the line (solenoid in open beta, full-length magwell coming and Pulsar/Hurricane support on their way), it'll fit right in at almost any playing field.

This is a serious aesthetic improvement, the QOL upgrades are just icing. Well done. :)
Thank you! It had some years to cook in my head and I'm glad I waited this long. All the ideas for packaging and design didn't fully come into my mind until a year ago and if I had started on it any sooner it wouldn't have turned out as nice.
Wow, the protean looks amazing dude! You should be extremely proud about this project.
Thank you so much! I'm happy with it, but unfortunately my brain is restless and is already thinking about the next project 🤪.
@@Flygonial It do be like that lol
Excited to see what you come up with next!
Was a blast to talk about this on the Podcast. Love to talk to you about design sometime in the future :)
This is gonna be big. I can feel it.
Fingers crossed 🤞
Your designs are great, thanks for another awesome blaster!
very cool, well done
It’s perfect! Release, what we want all this rime! It was an honor to be a beta tester!
An honor to have all of y'all make my job just that much easier :D.
Love this concept, awesome work!
Amazing blaster by an even more AMAZING designer. You have our thanks for making life more fun and full of foam!
Молодец мужик, респект!
More Gryphons to print!!
I’m very impressed!
I’m already printing a second one for people to test out, so I don’t have to share mine cuz I love it so much 😂
As coop would say, AWWWWW YEAH
LETS GOOOOOOO
holy tactics batman
build guide. i hope to get this ordered from sfi soon and get it all built up
The teardown is excellent! Brushless version??
Unlikely from me but some people have already expressed interest in making such a version. At the moment, I'm more interested in a scratch brushless design with some different design focuses.
when will there be a video build guide
The hardware kit is out of stock, is it coming back anytime soon?
I can't give an estimate of exactly what time frame, but they'll come back sometime after Endwar. Most of the remaining stock will be sold at Foamcon '24, which I understand not everyone can make, but Nerf vendors break their backs to put on a show at these events and quite a bit of prep time/busy-ness can be expected around these events.
Any plans for DZ mag/katana compatibility? Kinda like a wildcard magwell
At the moment, no. Wildcard would be significantly more tricky just thanks to how the magwell joint/grip is designed, but a dedicated magwell may be doable. For that, the main sticking point is the joint between the top of the grip and the magwell, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's possible.
A local should have already designed a DZ magwell though, I can ask him for it.
Select fire maybe?
Planned. I have a draft of code up and am still debating over which switch to use, also need to test it when I do put it together.
@@Flygonial sweet im excited to see it. Also saw on printable you said a micro set up. Definitely waiting on a dual micro set up before i make one.

Nice, thanks. Would there be any signficant problems if this was printed in PLA as opposed to the PETG or ASA that one would normally expect for an outdoor item containing hot-running electronics?
I mean, yes, but with caveats. If you aren't using a particularly aggressive cage set-up (multi-stage and/or very high current draw/RPMs), you can get away with a PLA cage. If you're vigilant about keeping it out of direct sunlight during a warm day and out of your car whenever it isn't running, you're good. If the weather never even gets all that hot where you live, that's another factor. In general, all the same rules of thumb with any other printed wheeler apply for this question, there's not anything majorly structural that depends on being PETG in particular. I run everything on PETG, even insignificant parts and accessories, and haven't bought PLA in years. It's just a nice bit of peace of mind for me.
@@Flygonial Thank you for reply. My choice of PLA is for environmental reasons. I understand that PETG would be better for this project.
