Really found this story so interesting. Also, well written and presented. The bravery of those Czech soldiers was incredible.
Here in the US we have never been occupied by a foreign power so I can't imagine the terror and hardship that must have been endured by the Czech people during WWII. The later occupation under the soviets must have been just as bad. Yet you Czechs refused to give up. I admire the courage and resilience of your People.

Soviet occupation obviously was not as bad as nazi occupation, but communists had longer time for their crimes, but still, thousands of people were executed during WWII by nazi occupants, only like tens or low hunderds were executed during 40 years of communism in Czechoslovakia. Communists prefered sending people to prison than execute everyone. Ofcourse it was different in USSR, their regime was much more brutal than here.

And 7 paratroopers vs 800 plus Germans and held held it for 6 hours is a heck of a dedication to fight till the very end took 20 to defeat only 3 paratroopers gor 3 hours is amazing

Very well done and informative! In 2018 I had the privilege of visiting St Cyril and Methodius Church and the underlying crypt. The memorial poignantly displays the heroic sacrifices of these young men and the Czech Resistance. These paratroopers gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country and for freedom. May they rest in honored glory forever.

I have been to ST cyrils methodius and found it very sad and moving. When I read further into their part in the attack,I discovered that they were sent to Cholmondesly castle in my home county of Cheshire in the UK.They were housed in a village called Ightfield and sometimes went into Whitchurch,a small town on the border with cheshire (shropshire)The pair were popular with the local girls. The castle was the training centre for SOE agents.I have visited the village and for some unknown reason Kubis and Gabcik are not on the war memorial which every english town/village has.I said to my wife ,they should be,they were very brave men.FREEDOM should be fought for!!

It is hard to imagine the barbarous reprisals after Reinhard Heydrich was assassinated. So many thousands of innocent people murdered, for example. Worse, the villages of Lidice and Lezaky were destroyed after the people in them were murdered as an act of blind revenge for Heydrich death at the hands of his assassins. So tragic and senseless, not to mention savage. Thank you for this educational video. Let us never forget the lessons from history.

I think it was Churchill or the British Admiralty who planned the assassination of Heydrich. They knew it could have terrible repercussions for the people of Prague but I read somewhere that it was a necessity for the war effort because there was the possibility that Heydrich might find out about Admiral Canaris' support for the Allies because he disliked what Hitler and his Nazis were doing in general. I think the admiral was a professional German naval officer, like Rommel, and was just trying to right what was wrong for the future of the German people. But I could also have misinterpreted what I read.

Why is it we are so curious about the evil ones? To me, Heydrich was the evilest because he didn't really care about Nazi ideology. He was ambivalent about the movement but Lena pressured him to be part of it. As I recall, Himmler had come down with a cold and canceled his interview but Lena got him to go anyway, a bold move as Himmler was annoyed at this end run. Apparently, he changed his mind and used Heydrich to help further his own goals. When it came to gaining power, Heydrich would have joined a Jewish movement if it would support his career. He did the nasty jobs because it kept his name floating around the inner circle and that was the key to advancement. He would have cheerfully torched a Nazi kindergarten if it helped him personally. There are few people that have no redeeming qualities, and Heydrich is at the top of my list. I believe any charming behavior on his part was calculated to enhance the image he wanted to project. A master manipulator.

The men who killed Heydrich, and their comrades who fought and died with them in the church --- and all those brave civilians who supported Operation Anthropoid---- are among the greatest heroes and patriots who have ever lived. Some day I would like to go to the Church and say "Thank you". The man who betrayed them is the worst coward and traitor who has ever lived.

Thanks for this grandiose „composition“ of the events. However, if the resistance people had known about or had taken into account the terrible revenge of the Nazis, would they have killed Heydrich nevertheless? 👍🏻👏🏻🙏🏻

Many thanks for a very informative story-telling and a detailed video-tour of assassination of Heydrich by the brave Czechoslovakian parachutists. I read Alan Burgess’s book ‘Sven Men at Daybreak’ and also watched a film based on the book’s narrative ‘Operation Daybreak’ and I enjoyed both very much. It was very interesting to see all the sites and how they look today, the locations and buildings in which those events from spring 1942 had actually taken place and also the memorials that pay tributes to those hero resistance fighters and patriots that mark those spots now. Diky velice.

To talk about the bravery of the two of the resistance is just absurd. Never mind that the first who's gun jammed ran away and then the actions of the second and the overall fallout of their actions virtually wiped out two villages full of people that had absolutely no say in whether they tried to pull off the assassination or not. Also what those two did had unequivocally no influence on how the war that continued long after would end, and why would it. Whoever decided to try to pull this off targeted someone that had no value as far as stopping the war or the atrocities that were unfolding as the war progressed... Calling them heros to me is just ridiculous. It was poorly planned and should have not even been attempted. All it did was get many massacred due to retribution. There is no way at that time they didn't know there would be a massive retribution afterward whether Heydrich died immediately or later.. It was ignorant, unnecessary and caused much more damage to those who lived there at the time that suffered a horrible fate due to their actions. Killing Heydrich would accomplish what?? It accomplished nothing but more bloodshed in a horrible way to the innocent people that had no say and no clue at that time. .. As a born and raised American, it would be the same as some rogue group launching nukes at Russia. Yes its an extreme example but to those living in those villages at that time, it might as well be the same. The outcome would be complete death and destruction in which NO ONE WINS!!! Anthropoid was a catastrophic failure from its inception and should have never been carried out..
It did not, nor would it ever have changed the course of the war and its eventual outcome..

  • @AlecxReid

There was no “Lord Reichsprotektor” in the Protektorate. Heydrich was only “Deputy Reichsprotektor”, meaning he had all the power but von Neurath was still the Reichsprotektor of the Protektorate in name only.
And Heydrich’s true cause of death has been a topic of discussion since 1942. In the autopsy report written by Dr Hamprel in 1942, he stated that Heydrich died from “septic organ failure”, but he corrected this in both 1970 and 1972 to “anemic shock”. However, other medical reports suggest pneumonia, pulmonary embolism and brain anoxia.

Imagine Reinhard Heydrich have been in tortoure of the grave siden 1942. Every day, every second. Snakes, scorpions, fire etc attacking him every day. That is situasjon of the non-muslim in the grave.

0:09 One of the most important act would be better formulation and no Czech resistance but Czechoslovak resistance as they came for the UK and they were members of Czechoslovak defence force forces acting under Czechoslovak government in London.

The Nazis wanted them alive so as to torture them. The archbishop was shot too. So sad.
Just to say, its the saddest podcast ever.
Hynrich Rinhert was a devil. What a legasy. He is burning in hell for sure.

Kudos to the brave 2 men who finally made Heydrich pay the fair price of obviously excruciating pain! Unfortunately so few other Nazi monsters had to pay for their crimes like Heydrich!

I have read a fair amount about Operation Anthropoid with its impact on the Czech Sudetenland. I believe the officials of the Benes government in exile in WW2 London had their eye on building a political consensus ensuring the Germans in the Czech Sudetenland were expelled after the war. The cold arithmetic of war meant trading thousands of Czech lives to create the political consensus to expell those roughly two million Germans from the Sudetenland. German SS general Karl Frank was hanged on a pole for the atrocity of Lidice and one other village massacre. The paratrooper who betrayed the patatroopers was also hanged postwar after a trial.
Here is my question: Would it have been at all possible to have smuggled the paratroopers OUT of Prague immediately after Heydrich's assassination? The only real hope in my estimation would have been to smuggle the paratroopers separately (without anyone knowing where the other paratroopers went) out into smaller cities or villages outside of Prague, marry them immediately to Czech underground women, start families, work common laborer jobs or on a farm and just quietly blend into the civilian population permanently. This anonymity was their only hope of survival. It was a blunder to have stayed in Prague after the assassination in one big group. Eventually, the efficient German Gestapo was going to find them in Prague after torturing and killing enough people. Had the paratroopers been smuggled out of Prague, married to local resistance women in separate areas it would have been impossible for the Germans to find them all. I wish a knowledgeable Czech person could comment on these thoughts. Thank you.
