  • There’s a lot of buzz about electric vehicles (EVs), and the automotive industry is undergoing immense change as we wean off our gasoline dependency. EVs are still in their early days, however, and they’re not currently a viable solution for every Canadian.
If you’re like many other drivers who want something more sustainable and efficient but aren’t yet ready to commit to a fully electric vehicle, don’t panic. There are many excellent options in many different body styles that offer some of the benefits of an EV but with none of the downsides.
Here are a handful of hybrids and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) that recently impressed us.

Jodi, I can't speak for the other brands but the waiting lists for most Toyota Hybrids in Canada remain appalling and repellent. 🤨

Hyundai really need to bring the new Kona hybrid in our great north. And must make the next Santa Cruz hybrid.

There are zero PHEVs or Hybrids that will compete with the incredible prices you can get on used EVs.

Gas and diesel vehicles should have made you forget about hybrids. Hybrids are only made for those who have irrational EV range anxiety.

Not sure what kind of kool aid you’ve been drinking but hybrids have been around for over 2 decades and they’re intended for a wider range of buyers other than the ones you mentioned. Clearly you’re not one of those!

@@ztekz These days, hybrids are the choice of those who fear range anxiety with an EV. There is not more need to be any more nervous about a dead battery than there is to worry about running out of gas. It's just different technology.
With hybrids, you get an attempt to make a motor and an engine work together. Many drivers don't want to be bothered with selecting all the options of using them. Hybrids are limited to about 50 miles of electric range. When using gas, you are lugging around the useless weight of the motor and battery. When using electric, you are dragging around the weight of the engine and transmission. Let's face it - it's a kludge.
Hybrids need all of the maintenance and repair of any ICE vehicle. The engine heat destroys rubber belts and hoses. Oil changes. Exhaust system rust. Engines are about 20% efficient, the rest of the energy is wasted in friction, reciprocating components and heat.
EVs are the way to go. They are 90-95% efficient. Silent. Minimal maintenance. They have about 30 moving drive train parts, as opposed to over two thousand in an engine and its transmission.
