Ah the good old days when the audience would just clap. Now when someone on X Factor opens their gob to sing the audience goes into a frenzy and jump up and down from their seats as if they've never seen someone on stage before.
And we never got to hear the sob stories regarding the traumatic lives of each contestant or get to watch the panel go off on their gigantic ego trips.
I have all three of Paul And Avis singles, And I have all of Our Kids who went to Number One with Just Might See Me Cry. And all 6 Singles by Trevor Chance, And the only single released by Cops Shortnin-Bread. Never heard of Johnny Hammond after this show was broadcast. Thanks for the Memories.

Jerry Mungo, I agree, better films as well. My dad was still alive and and all my grandparents, all gone now. My mother is still around but not as young and active as she was back in the 1970's. I was still a young child back then, everything to look forward to, great days.
New Faces. I liked the format with its prompt, suspensful scoring summary. Low budget? Maybe, but it worked. Derek Hobson was an EXCELLENT host, really carried it. And unscripted too. Chris North and Jill were an outstanding magician double act, knew the industry inside out

I Thought it was great 2 Watch this full episode of New Faces --- It was my favourite programme in the 70s - I Remember first watching it when I was just 14 - and I was telling my neighbour the other day I was only 29 LOL- I wish- I liked Our Kid and Simone the best in the competition in my opinion they had more edge than the other acts - I thought Cops was quite a strong group they looked good on the TV and the vocals were strong _ And the timing was faultless - Thank you Sid N for downloading it - I thourhouly enjoyed it 😀😝
Many programmes from 1950s 60s and 1970s were not saved..they only started archiving seriously from 1979.sure there are many programmes frkm back them but many..maybe your fathers was not saved,destroyed etc ..
If Johnny Hammond had not been a comedian he could have made it as a singer no problem. A very funny guy with a wonderful voice. Very sadly missed. RIP
At the time the Working Men's Club circuit was still big so you could see these acts locally! TV exposure was great publicity and the New Faces show introduced a lot of big stars.
Ah was it ever! Colin crumpton. On behalf of the committe. Loved that show, great memories of my childhood as a kid watching that, i thought it was a real grown up treat being able to watch that at the time. Good old 70s.
Of course, one plus point for the contestants was that, even if they were awful, they still didn't come across as big a knob end as Noel bloody Edmonds.....

Johnny Hammond's first throwaway gag - he cuts the band off, but they've already stopped playing (14:43). Another one he totally throws away is the song title "IfinF" (17:06) as in "If" in F major. Made me laugh.

One was 'They've taken away the trees,' and another was 'Safe is the fool (love me no more). I'd love to know what the act was called and what happened to them. They were talented.

They were Rob Tansley (drums), Paul Watts (guitar), John Gibney (vocals), Phil Campion (keyboards) and Phil Hickin (bass). They performed Taken Away The Trees, one of their own songs which was written by bass guitarist Phil Hickin. The judges were clearly impressed with the song as every single judge awarded them a maximum ten points for their content score. Add to that a star quality score of 36 and a presentation score of 38 they finished just three points behind the show winner.

HI, I recorded it off Challenge TV many years ago, when they were showing vintage game and quiz shows. I don't know who would hold the original recordings due to programme company changes over the years. Maybe you could try ITV. They may be able to point you in the right direction. Cheers.
If you consider that there was genuinely good stuff around in the 70’s, punk, new wave,funk, disco, glam rock etc etc, and then you see this dross dominating Saturday Night TV, it shows up the music on more modern versions, X-Factor etc, as mainstream dross. Look a bit further than Saturday light entertainment and you’ll find plenty of good stuff in this day and age.
I'm enjoying this now, but I think if I'd gone to England then(from the US)and saw this I'd have been disappointed that all British Television wasn't Monty Python.

It’s such a novelty to see these acts via the telescope of nostalgia. Refreshing that “Our Kid” were judged to be wooden by the pros and the man in the gold shirt gave the popular, wishful opinion for the lads in an essentially, grown-up show. The interlude soloist should’ve been, with the Sally Bowles ‘Cabaret’ recital, a female singer. The whole transatlantic arrangement was the typical bow to US-style entertainment and musical arrangements. Trevor was well worth the booking though.
The Osmond's were class act & boy could perform better than Noel Edmonds & not kill anyone & as for that blown up audience judge (I'm gonna be on telly let's get sparkly dressed up) who thinks Our Kid is better than said Osmonds is just laughably ridiculous.

It had a round called Opportunity Knockers where they show three acts from talent shows such as New Faces, Opportunity Knocks or The David Essex Showcase and asked who (at the time of recording) were still performing. I watched an old Episode of bullseye with jim Bowen, around 1989 , 90..there was a contestant on, julie,, who jim knew,, she appeared on New faces in 1974...she sang, The streets of london,, ..and the wise judge ' Mikey most' told her , she wouldn't get anywhere with that song, and it was inappropriate,, strange statement , ..and,,.3 months later,, it was number 2, for ralph mctell....I'd say she was.gutted....good old jim had a dig.." tony hatch was another judge,,, and he wrote the music for Crossroads !....
The band were terrible. This was Britain in 1976. The Damned put out New Rose, The Pistols put out Anarchy In The Uk. This felt like a parallel universe.
He was right about Our Kid’s dance moves. Unfortunately for them, that whole cute-band-with-kids-in act went out when punk and New Wave came in. I loved the act, and I have vague memories of seeing this show as a 6 or 7 year old on our black and white TV set back in the day.

Things are way better for talent shows now...although there is always some crap....only Simone here had any real conviction.

Only 16 episodes of Opportunity Knocks survive from the ABC/Thames era. Don't know how many New Faces (ATV version) episodes survive, though.

The band were terrible. This was Britain in 1976. The Damned put out New Rose, The Pistols put out Anarchy In The Uk. This felt like a parallel universe.
It is no surprise that punk burst forth out of all this fucking garbage. We were desperate for music that represented us.

He was right about Our Kid’s dance moves. Unfortunately for them, that whole cute-band-with-kids-in act went out when punk and New Wave came in. I loved the act, and I have vague memories of seeing this show as a 6 or 7 year old on our black and white TV set back in the day.
