Im guessing they actually were blinded from the intensity of the sun hitting the slope and didnt actually realise they were that close to the ground, infact i could inagine right where the pilot was looking in the distance to land and just didnt see the ground coming. Yeah, that beeping means someone pressed the crash button. Really sad that they keep installing it.
Jokes aside, if you hear a beeping in a helicopter, it's likely the low rotor rpm alarm, which probably means you lost the engine. In a helicopter like that one, you've only got one to begin with, and even if you had 2, you likely aren't staying in the air long with just the one left.

it has nothing to do with the helicopter. It has to do with the way you fly it. I have flown a R22 to considerably high altitude density in the alps and you can land well above 3000 m if you know what you are doing.
Almost all copter crashes are the result of pilot making mistakes, not machine failure.

The R22 has a very bad track record. Unfortunately not all pilots in all situations will know what they are doing and very experienced pilots will also screw up. Given that the R22 is cheap to operate, they are flown a lot by inexperienced pilots. That R22 accidents have nothing to do with the helicopter itself is a bit of a silly statement, it has everything to do with it. That pieces are not falling off the helicopter by themselves due to flawed design does not excuse it either. Some aircraft are very easy to screw up with, the R22 is one of them. Its accident rate speaks for itself.

      yeah i saw that too
the pilot just wanted to separate themselves from the cash, and didn't kill power at all, so high pressure fuel and hydraulic pumps tend to feed a mighty nice fire.

In my humble opinion: High altitude approach + higher than normal approach speed on landing + probably didn't balance helicopter before take off + slight yaw to right upon ground contact and caught a skid (helicopters with skids can "slide" in, you actually perform this during your check ride as part of full stop and sliding stop auto-rotation) + soft landing zone contributing to catching skid = dynamic rollover.

Lots of people have commented that it was the type of aircraft plus speed and visual issues basically saying everything that is possible is to blame! That may not have been the best choice helicopter to be up there, but in the hands of a good pilot it is perfectly capable of landing safely and returning back to where they came from. This is called CFIT. Controlled Flight Into Terrain. It's not clear to me if they lost power prior to this happening or if it was pilot error. I'm assuming there was a student and instructor and they didn't seem to apply any correction before the terrain so it looks like they expected it and did have a problem. They had 3 (or possibly 4) souls on board so quite heavily laden. I wonder if they exceeded the service altitude for the load or lost engine power. They did not have a rotor tail strike because the flight was not rotating out of control. Did Blancolirio do an analysis of this one? Was there any radio recorded? This is unfortunately an R44 living down to its reputation and why I will never get in one. Good everyone got out by the looks of it.

As a retired commercial fixed and rotor pilot of 33 years . 95% of accidents are caused . This pilot should not have (PUT ) himself and passenger in this situation. Very lucky they lived through this .
My question is. Did they learn anything from this event ?
PS: I have well over 400 landings with a BC , Canada FBO . I was very well trained on glacier landings and it is a very strict procedure.
I would do about 4 to 5 landings each day . And absolutely each one Is different . Mountain weather changes constantly.
The first procedure every morning would be to mark our landing area by over shooting and dropping large tree branches at the touchdown area as well .
Oh, never never fly up a mountain ridge at a 90 degree. At a 45 degree and always in aviation have an escape route. Shit always happens I say.
It is impossible to correctly establish where to snow surface begins without dark contrast areas .

Why??? It’s a perfectly safe helicopter. What’s not safe is a pilot who thinks they can exceed the aircraft’s limitations, as well as their own. Just like a gun doesn’t kill people, but people kill people. Same goes for a Robinson helicopter or any other type aircraft. Sure mechanical failure of the machine may occurs, but it’s rare. 99% of the time it’s pilot error and not fault of mechanical error. That goes for guns, planes, cars, power tools and helicopters.
