We understand, that’s the problem with Rio that a lot of people don’t get. It’s drop dead gorgeous, but the authorities let it go a long tome ago. For them it’s just a big old cash cow, they will keep milking it until it keels over. I hope your experience in Rio does not change your mind about Brazil! I say go, to Espírito Santo and from there catch the train to Belo Horizonte an absolute must do. While in Minas go visit Ouro Preto. From Ouro Preto stop at chapada diamantina on your way to Bahia and the Northeast of Brazil! Be safe as always!

I'm a Brazilian visual artist and I feel more confortable using my old cameras on the streets of the big cities. I prefer to use something cheap. I have old film cameras, vintage, toy cameras and obsolete digital cameras. Inside buildings, gated places, on rooftops or in the countryside and small fisherman villages I use my expensive gear. Fancy iPhones are a prime target for criminals because they can sell them quickly but it's good to be careful. Thiefs here like to rob electronic equipment using motorcycles. Two guys on a motorcycle with a gun and wearing helmets. Drug addicts (using knives) and minors/pickpockets are interested in cameras and cellphones that they can easily sell for cheap prices to get some cash.

@@SallyLauderdale The difference is, you need to DIG hard to find dangerous places in NY, or Munchen for example.. in Rio you need to be constantly aware because there are too MANY dangerous areas. People from Rio think that is a normal level, but it is NOT, Rio proportionally has mroe dangerous areas than any other huge city (obviously keepign places at war out of it)

Some photographers and videomakers insure their equipment. So an insurace contract should be considered too. I've watched some videos warning about photo equipment being robbed at gun point in the USA. Cities like San Francisco are not safe anymore. Big cities in Brazil are worst than San Francisco or Paris. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Hey guys, i just found your video and, as a Rio citizen myself, i thank you guys for your honest analysis of our city. About the camera issue, sadly it is true you gotta be careful with your smartphones, wallet, and big cameras. But with good city guides, they will know where take you guys with security, and "read the ambience" and sense if it is any danger. But, violence is sadly a commom problem at big cities in Brazil, so i'd advise you guys to get a smaller camera, like Sony's Action Cam, or even bigger ones, but small enough it would fit in your pocket. If you do it, you can walk with no worry at all. 😀
I loved your content, and just subscribed 😄

Well - I am originally from Rio, although I’ve been living in the USA for 11 years. You must understand that due to its unique geography, Rio didn’t gentrify its tourist areas to the extent São Paulo did. This unique mix of all classes everywhere, which I find amazing. Rio offers loads of “free” activities - the beach being the centerpiece of an activity where money does not matter much. There is no ticket, no security guard controlling who has access to the beach. I love SP, don’t get me wrong, but I understand there is an illusion in the center area as poverty was exported to the city's outer rim. Then, if you only walk in the core center city - as you did in your videos - you get the impression you have first-world safety. Like NY - Manhattan - great - now try to go to Harlem with a big expensive camera! Or try to visit 95th south in Chicago with a display of wealth! Rio has a beautiful mix, but thanks to Brazil's inequalities and root history of corruption, that translates into more danger against a flashy display of wealth. And your camera, in Brazil, where the minimum salary is 250 dollars, is a striking display of wealth. So I enjoy your tips - Rio is not a place to show wealth. Rio is a place to enjoy a caipirinha, to wear flip-flops, and to listen to Samba. Tourists need to get that to enjoy Rio. otherwise they will hate what they have paid for.

Couldn't have put in better words! If you go to the outskirts of the city (my hubby's family lives in one of those) you understand how abandoned the poor population really is...and I'm not talking favelas only! I live in a medium sized city in São Paulo state. The contrast is huge. We both have similar wealth background (that is, lack of wealth, poor but no favela lvl), if you notice how my neighborhood is compared to the one where he grew up in Rio you can see the difference. He was the first to notice when he moved to my city to live with me. My neighborhood has decent maintained streets, with good urban lighting, services like hospitals, health clinics, police coverage, public transportation just some blocks from my house and etc. City services like maintaining the trees, cleaning of the streets and etc. Where he lives is just...abandoned. Barely any street is maintained, the traffic is a mess (from bad planning), some streets are full on ground, no pavement, that leads to mud when it rains, and in some areas, you can smell the sewage that is not properly directed. Everything is far away, good jobs and companies are more than 1 hour by train, same for colleges and etc. That talk saying the government only abandons favelas because of crime is sooooooo false. It's just an excuse, poor ppl in general are all abandoned in Rio.

@@jessiamedeiros4294 The reason is simple, Rio was not designed to be a big city, but when the immigration from the northeast arrived in the 60s, the population of the city grew super fast and it lead to crackdown on the government expenses. When the State of Guanabara (city of Rio) was fused with the State of Rio de Janeiro, it was not only am administrative measure, we lost money, the money that was supposed to keep only the city, now had to keep the whole State. We still had manage to exist until around 2014 the took Rio’s royalties money and divided to the rest of the country, this broke Rio’s economy, do you understand that? Since then Rio does not have money for anything, the State is trying to negotiate the debt with the Government, there is no money to invest in cutting trees, or building parks, it’s over, Rio can barely pay public workers salary. When you guys speak badly about Rio, remember your State took our royalties and now you want to bash our city.

I've been to Rio many times since the late 1980s, have wonderful photos, from Ipanema, Copacabana not only the sea front but the back streets too, Laranjeiras, Centro, Botafogo, the Port area, Barra, Tijuca, always on foot, never had any issue for carrying my cell phone or my tiny Sony camera which gives me wonderful shots and movies, wherever I go. Of course I'm aware but not scared to the point of not enjoying my staying there, I would easily live in Rio for sure. American Big cities have their issues with safety but I don't see people stopping visiting them. As I said on another video, I've never been robbed or my house invaded by burglars in Brasil (São Paulo) but 3x in London where I live, in Madrid, a very safe city, a scary moment in Lisbon, the safest European capital and saw a kind of "arrastão", a group of girls targeting tourists in the Spanish Steps in Rome. Nice to hear of you again; on the one hand I was delighted @Rio4Fun guided you deep into Rocinha for a deep dive in Brazil's culture; on the other, I've never been to Rio, but I've heard enough to be worried as you didn't post for a while. I'm glad you're okay. I hope, despite the difficulty, it was an enlightening experience for you. Looking forward, I recommend you visit the historic cities and calm countryside here in Minas Gerais, the contrasting sceneries of the Northeast, and Brasília, the planned capital... or as much of it as you can fit in a video. The Amazon is a mysterious beauty too. All of that is, of course, if you plan to extend your stay. There's lots to discover in a continent-sized country such as Brazil, as no one vlogger has ever done more than just a general outline of it; and we understand there are limitations on how much you can explore. Anyway, I hope you can explore much more, actually enjoy your time ever more, and then bring Brazilian warmth with you onto your next destination.
    Kudos for your amazing reviews.

The reason for this "split opinions" about safety is because here we've normalized the possibility of being robbed or something like this. It's sad saying this, but that's the truth. A lot of us (including me) are just so used to this danger, that looks like that's no danger at all.

Brazilians have this contradiction when talking about violence for a few reasons.
1- We are so used to dealing with these situations that we lose track of what is dangerous.
2- This custom also creates in people, from a young age, the habit of walking on the street alert and without valuables. In this case, in fact, many people are not robbed or subjected to violence in their lifetime,, because they unconsciously behave in a way that is not attractive to thieves.
3- Also the places that this person goes, and the frequency with which he exposes himself to risk. Not to mention the luck factor.
These factors distort our perception of what is and is not dangerous.
So, when you hear a Brazilian saying that Rio is not violent, keep that in mind. That person may not have the parameters to tell you what is safe and what is not, from a Canadian's perspective.
Also don't be shy about complaining about Rio's security problemas. There is no carioca who doesn't complain about it. A gringo complaining about this, will only be frowned upon if it is clear that there is contempt for the country and the people.
This is not the case for you guys, we know. You can complain about it, like every good carioca.
It is also important to point out that not all places in Brazil have this level of violence. There are quite safe places. But Rio is certainly not one of them.

Muitas pessoas vinham de outras cidades pro eixo Rio - são Paulo, sem dinheiro, sem ter aonde morar, então iam pros morros e areas ainda não muito habitadas e construíram de forma irregular, aí foi aumentando

One of the biggest problems imo, is that the taxes for electronics in Brazil is absurdly high. For any tech items. We have the most expensive iphone in the world, but our salaries are much much lower compared to many contries'. So in places where the duality (and sometimes, unfairness) of life becomes clearly visible, there are some desperate people that see electronics (especially the ones brought in by tourists, as our import taxes makes them especially valuable in our market) as a "easy cash oportunity", as they will be probably able to sell them really very quickly if they tag them below the average price. Not trying to justify anything, just trying to explain why it is such a common concern and quickly noticed by brazilians.

That's why the country get this picture of a dangerous country, that you have to take care at each step... and it's just not like that..

Adding some fun(or not so fun) facts:
    - A reasonable number of Rio residents never went to Christ or Sugarloaf Mountain (myself included)
    - Despite the risk of being robbed walking around with a BIG camera, be sure that material damage is the only real danger, it VERY rare to this robbery on tourists to have true physical damage. Most of the time they get the camera or phone and run very fast, because tourist robbery when the tourist get hurt get a lot of attention of the police and most often than the offender end up killed by the police instead of arrested and if they dont harm the tourist many times they can end up with light fines.
    - You can safely walk with your camera around tourist attractions like the sugarloaf mountain or Christ, its expected as tourists and the security on this places are much more watchful of criminals.
Another day you visited Madureira and passed by less than a mile of my home! If you managed to visit the suburbs of Rio again, please tell me so we have a "chopp" together and I very much recommend you to visit "Engenhão" on a weekend were there isnt a game being played. When no team is playing, the place become a very cool family friendly park with food trucks, cheap food and beer, and is reasonable safe. I would dare to say that during the day you can even walk with your camera around relatively safe as long as some local (like me :D) is with you. If you wanna see how a carioca from suburbs have some CHEAP fun and enjoy a cold beer with friends on a weekend, thats an amazing place to look :)
