      Although it is close, it isn't exactly pronounced the same, the "o" sound is more similar to the o in the word "told" than in the name "John". Unless there's a secret pronunciation to John I was never told.

    That being said I pronounced the names of many of them more correctly then I thought I did (Even if not perfectly so).
    But seriously, nice video to have, so I appreciate the work you put into checking them all. Not sure if you're planning on uploading more before the year ends, so I'll say it here.

    A few of the Japanese pitch accents do sound a bit weird, like Yagokoro is supposed to sound like "や[high]ご[low]こ[low]ろ[low] (が[low])" instead of the usual "こ[low]こ[high]ろ[high] (が[high])" for 心
    or your お燐 sounding like "oo" + rin
    Okuu has more of a stress on the last part, and it's pronounced longer because of two vowels

    • @GensouChronicle
      @GensouChronicle  2 дні тому +7

      Yeah, there's a few minor flubs. I'm aware of the elongation of vowels, as seen in some of my other pronunciations, but when I'm pronouncing this many characters, there will be a few mistakes. The main thing I wanted to aim for was actually getting the syllables right.

    People calling Minamitsu by surname unlike almost everyone else in Touhou, which surprisingly often goes by first name basis, is probably due to the navy schtick. Something about people calling captains by their surnames (though the joke is that 'murasa' also refers to a youkai, so they're technically NOT calling her by surname).
    If memory serves right, the one time ZUN talked more about Myouren, he said he'd likely look an old typical Buddhist monk (i.e. shaved his hair).
    I believe the reason the English translation went with Chang'e instead of Jouga is that for once, there's a reading that is way more well known in the Western community than the Japanese one, instead of both Japanese and Chinese being equally unknown. This wasn't always the case, as in the really old translations, like of the early chapters of Sangetsusei manga, you can see Chinese readings of what nowadays uses Japanese reading (me and my homies chilling at the Xuánwǔ Ravine)
    also I didn't expect you to list off the gods that were summoned in Silent Sinner lmao

      Keep in mind that Murasa isn't the only character people often call by surname instead of given name: there's also Sukuna, probably because "Shinmyoumaru" looks like more of a mouthful than it actually is.
      And then there's the case with the green backup dancer, whom some people (myself included) will call "Teireida" to distinguish her from the original Mai.
      Rin Satsuki will typically get the full name treatment to avoid confusion with Orin.

      @@GensouChroniclePersonally my headcanon is that the scarlet sisters were originally from Burgundy hence why Remilia has a French name while Flandre has a more Dutch-Flemish sounding one. And got infected from a Romanian vampire, thus Remilia’s song title. Then they moved to England as they write in English to Kosuzu. They meet Patchouli in England and also made a whole lot of their money during the opium wars where they met Meiling. Only to then move to Gensokyo sometime around WW1-WW2. Its the best way to have everything line up.

    • @alexandrecardoso7947
      @alexandrecardoso7947 2 дні тому +10

      "No" indicates posession.
      Fujiwara no Mokou = Mokou of/from Fujiwara (clan)
      Toyosatomimi no Miko = Miko of many ears

    • @GensouChronicle
      @GensouChronicle  2 дні тому +11

      'no' in this case is a Japanese particle used to denote possession/belonging. You could translate it to 'of', except the the association would be reversed. Lots of prominent Japanese clans would have this in their names. Mononobe no Futo would be 'Futo of Clan Mononobe' in this case. You may have also seen 'von' in some German names.

    For what it's worth, she is barely connected to light for "Lumia" to apply and I don't think ZUN ever made particularly ironic namechoices otherwise, that's like if Chirno was tied to fire despite being derived from the english word Chill. And in her few appearances in the series, she has spellcards for both the dark and light-sides of the Moon. And of course, "Rumia" as it is is essencially the only non-PC98 name that has no direct meaning that comes to mind.)

    4:20 This is the first time I hear about this and...yeah, this is not great, we should fix that. That is like if we kept Eiki as "Yamaxanadu Shikieiki" just because the UI misspells her.
    8:10 Funny Maeriberry(Can we use a made up "Märibelle" spelling in the future? That's still not a real name, but neither is Flandoor and the whole point behind shortening her to "Mary" is that her actual name is kinda convoluted when rendered out, but "Mariberu" is straight up one of the simpler names in the series.)

    Given when Gensokyo was isolated from the outside world and Tewi's age, I think pronouncing the "w" in "wi" is acceptable unless I see Tewi herself make a statement on the matter in an official work (except if she's trolling). This policy also applies to Tenshi as well.

    • @GensouChronicle
      @GensouChronicle  2 дні тому +3

      So, actually, the pronunciation of those characters fell out of use CENTURIES before the policy change after WWII, which would be well before Gensokyo. That said, Tewi is ancient. And Tenshi is around 1000 years old I think.
      The question of how they pronounce their own name is a subject people have brought up, however.
