I would go a step further and say it would be nice if Rare would allow you to purchase any style of "cosmetic" to add to any sail, tattered, cutout, weathered, etc
I've been saying the same thing for a long time. I think there needs to be a new sail customization option which adds the ability to change the 'tattered' level from whole, small tear, big tear, and cut out.
@@GrayGamerI do think cloth being a sail repair item would be interesting. If a cannonball goes through your sail, you lose speed but get a hole in the sail, which can be repaired with cloth. This hole (patched or not) remains aboard a captained ship
I've never had a problem with DA, but can see how some people might. Honestly though- on a bigger boat you should just be trimming your mid-sail. Unless you're in a chase you don't need to, or should be going full speed, and so your sail should always be trimmed. It takes much longer to raise a sail than to lower it, and so keeping your sails trimmed on a bigger boat actually allows for more maneuverability with turning, more recoverability because you can raise your sail faster if your mast gets knocked down, and you can get it to full-raise faster for a slow-down. Finally, trimming your sails offers that visibility that is just not possible without either having the DA sails equipped, or having done this method. I think the real problem here is that players haven't adapted to a norm of trimming their mid-sail, and because of that has put a lot more emphasis on the "advantage" gained by the DA sails I for one, would call the sails with rips in the middle of them cheaper than the DA sails, and more pay-to-win, because I've already answered the problems with the DA sails in my perspective, but rips in the center of the sail (like kraken) is an advantage that's unafforded by other sail sets Food for thought.
I’m personally not too bothered by the dark adventurer. I feel that it offers such a minuscule advantage that would only prove useful in a very specific scenario. If I get sunk by a dark adventurer ship, it wasn’t because of the sails
@@layker4039 I totally get that and find it unfortunate that as players we’re kind of forced to decide if we want an objectively tactically better option or to actually use the cosmetic system as it was intended.
@@tigerbomb909 Yeah and it’s not the only item like that. Like certain guns - while cool - are bulkier and block more view, so ppl may decide not to use them.
100% agree. I hate that they are so "op" with the cutout. I very rarely choose any other sails. Your solution with purchasing the cutout for other sails too was one I like. That way I can use the cutout on my favorite sails
Get in the habit of trimming mid-sail while you play! I've never used DA sails in my life, and likely never will. Trimming midsail has tons of benefits outside of visibility
OP? 😂 I wouldnt play those sails for this mini cut-out. I sink other ships without this crap for a some time now. The advantage is marginal. And if i want more visibility on the brig i just lift the rear sail a few millimeters and i'm fine.
@@kannibal8850 if you pull up the DA sails a little bit it's almost like not having sails at all. Most people aren't running DA sails to have them all the way down. I'd say it's a pretty big advantage. I don't use them and I sink people fine but saying it's marginal is just ignorant. It's the difference between being able to see and not being able to see. How do you believe that not a big advantage?
Mate they really are not that good use the any other sail for a few days and when you get into a fight just raise emm up a bit and you are solid you will have the same speed still not like it matters anyway you don’t wanna be full sailing in fights most of the time
Two Points. 1: If you are using DA Sails, and want to PvP, have a great time playing cat and mouse. Generally, people who are not blood thirsty will see those sails, and run away for hours on end. If you don't want runners, try not showing your hand to the table. 2: I do like the idea of applying the cut out to all sails for 8mil. That is honestly a really really good idea. Alternatively, which may be less appealing. Since they are missing 1/5 of their sail length, they should make you ship slower. In a game where everyone is supposed to have the same tools, having a sail with an advantage, but no disadvantage is a mistake.
Its only a major advantage on a gally and they suffer against wind as is and brugs out run them full wind, on brigs you can very slightly raise back sail and see mroe than fine anyway. Thats just a bad take all around and makes no sense
I say they should lessen the size of the cut out and make it available to purchase for all other sails, maybe even adding the other sail types as well for every sail (e.g weathered, ripped, etc).
I would go two steps further and say that they should completely change the way sails look on all three ships to allow for more visibility. Maybe place the sails higher and make them bigger so that they look more imposing? Perhaps even add the triangular sails in places where it wouldn't make the ship look too cluttered (it's been something that people requested for a while now). I think most people dislike helming because of how little you tend to see and how little "dopamine hits" there are compared to boarding or cannoning. More visibility makes it less annoying.
Agreed, I'm sure real sails on a galleon are higher and wider, for the exact reason that if they're low enough to be obstructing the helmsman's view, they're being hit by less wind over the stern Also triangle jibs look cool Also also, Far Eastern style sails when?
I disagree, having less visibility means steering requires more skill and awareness and adds a layer of stress and uncertainty in battle. Also, it gives more reason for solid communication between a helmsman and the crew.. either the crew can warn of dangers, or the helmsman is asking for assistance or guidance.. an experience created by design. Some people don’t like steering because they over do it and rarely move from the wheel.. When I am steering I’m on the wheel probably 25% of the time and managing everything else/ just chilling at the front the other 75%..
What really helps with DA sails is that if you come across a ship with them, you kind of know what you are going to get from the crew. So either you can avoid or go after. Kind of like a meta reaper’s mark.
The more often a meme travels around, the more people will overuse it. People who had no clue about it in the first place. And the same thing with these sails, they have become a meme in the SoT community with everyone thinking these sails will offer them an advantage.
I saw a similar suggestion on reddit a while back. Let the cutout be applied to any sail style, but I'd take it a step further. Theoretically such a cutout would also have a physical effect, IE cut sails can't catch as much wind and therefore can't push a ship as quickly. Then at least we wouldn't only have everyone sailing with cut sails. You could also introduce other types, like Light Sails that make you move the slowest but also don't collapse a broken mast when you lower them.
I like the cutout idea. I always end up as the helm for my brig/gal friends. I enjoy helming on a sloop because I can see. But I straight up hated helming the bigger ships because I couldn't see anything. I would much prefer to use sails that match my ship more, but doing so makes the game less fun.
I like the concept of purchasing varing effects for the sails that Allen suggested. If you could apply a cutout, worn effect etc. it'd be neat to be able to rig them differently too, lateen, gaff, Bermuda style etc. but it shouldn't change anything other than better visibility on certain ships. if it's like a crazy expensive purchase that anyone can apply to any sail they like I'm all for it. rares gonna need more stuff to grind towards soon and since there's no real need for more ship types it's be cool to see more variety on the horizon.
Yes either make the cutout available for any sail or just change the design to make them like normal sails. It’s a dumb advantage but it really can make a noticeable difference
I was just talking about the same solution with a friend! I’d much prefer “sail cuts” being an option, since there are at least 4-5 different cuts I’ve noticed, and probably more! As it is right now, the mindset is “why wouldn’t you use da if you have access to it” and tbh I’d rather be able to switch frequently for mood rather than always have the same sails… having cuts separated feels like a solid fix to me!
I grew to hate these when I was going through my ships and they all had DA sails. It felt like my ships had nothing setting them apart. So I slapped some different sails on and got used to running a bit down the stairs to check the horizon again, or having a little curl on the brig.
I really like the idea of paying (gold!) for a sail cut out. Rare could even take it one step further and introduce all kinds of "Sail trims" for players who want to go that extra mile and really make their sails look crazy.
Another option would be to make the different cutouts/formats available for every set of sails and free for everyone as an option you can save for your captained ship. Or just reword the DA sails and remove the cutout on the bottom of them.
I got another solution to the DA sails, even if it'd be a bit difficult to implement: They give you an advantage, so they need to give you a disadvantage to counter it and keep it balanced. The sails are missing a part, so perhaps. The DA sails would give increased visibilty in exchange for less speed and maneuverability. You'd be slower, you'd turn slower.. you basically become a sitting duck if its a galleon against the wind. But you know, you can see more so.. thats something.
to be honest you could remove the cut from them as such without much of a problem - DA set itself is expensive so it still would make sense for the sails to be so expensive - I honestly dont think they´ve put them behind 8 mil bcs of the cutout
@@infinitypeaches3329 Gee, it's like almost every other sail in the game already doesn't have the cutout advantage and yet people still play the game just fine. Wild! You're literally just making a case for its game altering advantage. I don't agree making it standard across the board. No cutout should be part of the game and strategy. Work around it instead of taking the easy, boring path.
@@idkfalkong4 I would rather actually see when im sailing, and the cutout idea would work perfectly. Like make your sails ripped, cutout, some seaweed, weathered or even normal. They could do the same for hulls and have barnacles and starfish. You have clearly never been on a brig with normal sails, the cutout is so good on brigs and galleons
@@infinitypeaches3329 I've played on a Brig many times with normal sails, lol. Don't tell me what I have and haven't done. Been playing since the beta and on through all the updates and on all three ship types. You want to take a lazier path and I don't agree with it. It adds an aspect to the game when people have to play around the sails and change their height to see better at the loss of speed or worry about on deck movement for pathing and tracking other ships. Yeah, the cutout is good. That's obvious. I'm not arguing that. But I think it tarnishes the gameplay and skill experience. It's an easy way out, and Blurbs' point is that it is such an advantage that it is a problem. My answer to his question on thoughts is; no, I don't think we should allow a purchasable cutout for any ship. I'd rather they adjust this sail to be more like the standard sails and call it a day.
I agree and had this conversation with my crew. It’s true the DA sails offer better visibility but if matching your ship is important to you, you’re limited to cosmetics/ color schemes that match these sails. I’m not even a fan of the rest of the DA set. I would prefer the option of owning the cutout shape and applying sail patterns I already own. Rare could do this for the rest of the sails as well. Sell the different sail shapes and apply whatever cosmetic you have already earned. Great ideas!! Let’s hope Rare is paying attention!!
My take is that every sail should come shipped to you in a default perfect state, and then you can choose to purchase the state of the sail separately, in a whole new shop menu similar to like cannon flares. This means that you can give any sail a tattered look, a v-cut look, a brickwork cutout (veil of the ancient sails), or a sawtooth cutout (party boat sails), among other things. And, perhaps the v-cut could still be pirate legend locked.
I've agreed with this sentiment for a long time. I don't particularly like to DA sails, but I use them almost every time because of the advantage. I used to love using a new set on my ship every time I sailed, but now I would be putting myself at a disadvantage for that. The easy and obvious solution is for Rare to just fill the gap back in. It never should have existed in the first place.
Great idea man. I'd love just the cutout. We brig a lot, and any regular sails on brig are really bad vision wise and yes you can constantly hop on and off the wheel to make sure your course is good, or curl, but I'd rather just be able to see. Also im not helm for my boat but I have tons of other Sails I'd like to use, and do on my sloop, but really almost aren't competitively viable for bigger ships.
Even though i'm still working on getting the full DA shipset, and i've bought the sails, i've made it a point to not use the sails on any of my ships. Not only because i have faith in my own skill as a helmsman, but the main sail is usually the first one to get rolled up almost all the way, if not completely. That, and i have a bunch of sails that just look nicer.
I rock the set on my Captained Galley which I named The DA's Office with the intention of pairing it with that set to get a chuckle or two from other pirates who see it.
Here's a better idea. Shorten the length of the sails on both the Brig and Gally, where they are primarily used due to difficulty seeing, and do away with the cutout entirely.
It's like 2013 GTAO before the money glitches. You actually had to work and grind and build up to getting that $1,000,000 Adder. It was a benchmark accomplishment. Then once people start to cheese their way into getting it, suddenly all the people who put in hard work for it were now suddenly cheesy sweats like everyone else, regardless of whatever they said. The same goes for the DA set. If you're an old school SoT player like me, you want the full set to match, or at least mix and match to create a unique look (Ashen Dragon Hull, Ashen Reaches Cannons, Capstan and Helm, and the Black Phoenix Sails, Figurehead and Flag make for the perfect "Dark Phoenix" set, btw). Seeing a full set of Ghost Captain, Pirate Legend or Dark Adventurer was rare, and when you did, you wanted to take pictures with them. Now that people only gun for the DA Sails because of the tactical advantage, the set has lost its appeal. I like the look of the DA set in its entirety, but now the sails just mean you're going to be in for a fight. I do agree that the 8,000,000 gold paywall for the CUTOUT is much more viable of an option. Starter players won't have it, and it still would feel like you are gaining something above other players because you worked for it. Because of Captaincy though, I've since made a Sloop with the Barrel Bombardier set, its name is simply... BOOM. I use it in kamikaze fashion when I see DA sails and I become the biggest powder keg in the game.
In a way I was thinking you would go the route of suggesting the cutout be the purchase. I would say this is a decent solution, though I do think they would need to rework every sail at least somewhat in order to fit that "cutout" shape. I personally try to use all other sails I have when playing as well but the sole convenience of the cutout is unmatched when you're helming. It's not really strategical advantage it's more or less an annoyance factor at that point, so I think if they gave the art team some extra time and a few of the devs time to re-code the sails to have a cutout and non-cutout version, then I think it would be a good idea. It would definitely be nice to just have more variety on the seas because these days all you really see is diaper sails or DA sails in my experience.
Alright so, 2 things I would like to say on this topic. 1, It's not like raising your sails by 5% really effects the speed of your ship enough to effect the outcome of the battle. Whenever my crew enters naval combat while crewing a larger ship, the first thing we do is walk over to all the masts and tap W 3 or 4 times to give the helm a little visibility. to prevent them from ramming rocks while sailing in circles, and we will lower it again if we ABSOLUTELY need the speed, which is rare. 2, I don't think saying "the reason this cutout exists is because of the price tag" is accurate or fair only because everything in the pirate hideout is stupidly expensive. It was the OG end game store and served as the games original gold sink. The entire DA shipset is priced similarly without offering any other kind of advantages, and there are other ship sets sold in the hideout that exist just to be expensive, like the ghost set. I don't exactly think they made the sails with the intention of them offering any kind of benefit, and the fact that it does provide more visibility was just an oversite. I think rare just made a new sail and wanted it to be more angular for the aesthetic, and the only reason we haven't gotten more sails with the same shape is either because the controversy surrounding the sails, which doesn't exactly make sense because having more accessible sails with the same shape would mean its no longer an advantage, or (and what I think is more likely) because rare seems to only make cosmetics for the pirate emporium now... If they released 3 actually new shipsets a season with normal outpost prices, I am almost certain that some of them would have something similar to the cutout.
The cutout shouldn't be that expensive. I believe the solution is to make the cutout pricey, but not crazy, like 500k at most. Since the other items in the DA set are crazy expensive, you could keep the sails priced as how they are. You could also have different sail options, like trimmed, cutout, tattered, etc which would cost different amounts, but once you bought them for that sail, you could apply them on and off, or EVEN BETTER, you can apply them to any sail.
An average player could rack up 500k in just a few hours if they know what they're doing. Gotta give it some kind of grind so it feels like an accomplishment.
@@369Sigma Then make it something higher. But it shouldn't be more then 5mil. And so what, you cant have an advantage that newer players cant have. Im all for that.
FINALLY someone also noticed this issue! I've been voicing my disdain for these sails ever since more and more players began to rely on the DA sails and just how much uglier a lot of ships now look sailing around because of how much these sails stick out from the rest of how most players style their ships. It used to be a favorite of mine starting out in the game just to see how others stylized themselves before everyone just started using the DA sails... Also, love the idea of sail customization for cut outs and what not. It would fit well at home as another feature of captaincy! I'd love to be able to apply tattoo-esce design to my sails, especially applying holes to some of my favorite sails in the game! Maybe even take this a step further and let us apply a set of images and wears to the blank sails in the game. I would die for a classic skull and crossbones design on some sails...
As someone who knows the struggle of creating a game I say it would be the better solution for rare to take away the cutout from the DA sails and all similar things from the few sails that have them. Your idea with the cutout being purchasable and applicable to all sails would mean Rare would have to make a model for all sails to feature the cutout, or make it so all sail cosmetics can be applied to the DA sail. I would much rather have no cosmetic thing give you any advantage no matter how big or small, the DA sails would be the best example but there are also flintlocks that feature an ironsight.
I really do like the improved view on the brig and gally. Being good at sailing really only overcomes the sloop it's still hard to manage three masts on the big ship so the visibility is significant. However, I was never into the raider nation aesthetic and I'm not a PvP guy. I spend many hours just doing, stuff. My own thing. I rarely use them though because I found they are sweat-magnets. Whenever I have them I attract unwanted PvP attacks. My go-to set on everything is Silent Barnacle, I much prefer the worn rustic appearance. I think rather than buy the sails, you should be able to buy the cutout shape to be applied to any sail.
Have them extend the sails so it doesn’t provide a beneficial gap at the bottom, that could solve the problem! Great Vid and I totally agree with you! The sea’s can be colourful again!!
The DA Set was introduced solely because Rare had been doing nothing for months to even a year with their in game currencies, on top of adding the emissary system, gold was damn near pointless. (and let’s not even talk about doubloons) There is no bigger meaning of owning the DA sails that would ever mean that person is a skilled player at all. Neither is becoming pirate legend, all these mean that you have played the game enough to understand what’s going on vaguely. Becoming PL doesn’t make someone’s awareness and game sense the level of NAL players and owning the DA sail doesn’t mean they should be good enough at helming to not need it. That being said, being able to force cut your sail for a small price, like the price of repairing your sloop maybe, would be a great idea and completely get out of this DA meta even though I’ve seen much less DA sails recently. Then again I mostly find sloops on the seas so not much reason to put them on anyway.
another idea: sails could have a set of cheap cutout patterns you could buy, similar to hairstyles and hair dye this would allow for another level of customization while also having the cutout just be another add on, there could be a torn pattern maybe one similar to real pirate ships, also making them cheap, maybe 10-4k would mean anyone could access the cutout
Sail cutout as extra cosmetic sounds like great stuff actually... Alternatively, just adjust the cut out so that the point of V comes as low as regular lower sail and the flaps go lower than usually to keep that V shape. It'll be cosmetic disadvatnage now.
It’s not a bad idea but I think all the pirates who already paid 8mil for them… would feel well … like they got rared… tbh I have them and I’d be pretty upset if I logged in one day and they were long sails. Lol if that ever happens rare better refund gold in equal amounts to how much of the sail they add on. 😂
@@mysticashley6038 Thing is the value of the sail doesn't come from it's advantage, it's because of the fact it's dark adventurer's. The ship skin is the same price.
@@EmDashYT You are right… there is nothing about the rest of the DA set that makes it special to be so expensive. I think it’s more of a money flex to have the whole set. The sails are the only piece that gives an advantage. Although I’m not sure how a hull or capstan could give an advantage. Cannons cosmetics could as far as aiming, fast climbing inside with shorter cannons. Wheel design could give an advantage as well for visibility and some wheels are easier to tell when you are perfectly straight. Nothing in comparison to the visual advantage of the DA sails. Some pistols have better aim cosmetics as well. For example the obsidian pistol design (there are a few others with the same design just in different colors) the gun functions the same as the others but it has a better aim therefore… advantage. At the end of the day it’s really all about personal preference and what works for your pirate.
I agree wholeheartedly and want Rare to implement this NOW. No more round tables discussing it, no more having devs ignore this massive conversation…I don’t know a single person who can present a downside to this idea. IT NEEDS TO HAPPEN.
I think maybe keep the da sails at 8 mil, but allow the cutout to be freely equipped with maybe a downside of some sort, like trading visibility for a little bit of sail adjustment speed.
Personally, I've always been able to sail on a ship just fine without DA sails no matter the ship type. I've always thought it ridiculous for the price, its just too expensive for me to care about and it's just not my first pick of sail when I get on any ship. It's honestly sad that some people's reliance on DA sails to even play makes me dislike them even more.
I'd rather have them remove the cutout or alter the mesh of the DA sail so it doesn't provide too much of an advantage. Making the cutout purchasable for 8m will only solve the cosmetic issue but not the disadvantage. Making the cutout cheaper will make it so everyone would use it and no one would care to sail with the rectangle variant. I would modify the DA sail so that it drops even lower than normal sails. The cutout would let you see a little bit more than normal sails but not as much as today, and the pointy corners would actually block partially the lateral view. Maybe balancing it in that way is the way to go, and after that they could offer the cutout as a purchase.
fair said , yes they should , i did purchase my DA sails by grind , but i would be ok with adding the cut to some sails , but it should be available for sails a bit more expensive and should be around a 750k price to cut them
In my opinion this is a non issue. I can’t afford it and those who have bought the sails have earned to use it however they want. A good crew is better than a perceived advantage in a sail.
As a DA ship set user, I can say that I don't use DA sails for the advantage. If you are sailing from island to island it really does not matter how much visibility you have since most of the time you are just sailing straight towards your destination and do not have to maneuver much. In a fight, however, in theory, DA cutout must allow for a faster reaction, since you see your opponent better and have more information. Well, that is only true in theory, since nobody fights with all the sails down. Maximum speed is very rarely used in a fight. Knowing that you can just put all your sails a bit up, to both slow your ship down and give yourself better visibility. So yeah, DA sails do not break any balance. People are using them so much not because it gives them advantage, just because it shows how much money they got. I like to sail towards some folks on my 24 million gold DA ship and reaper 5 flag and just see them scuttle.
If they did a cut out or torn sail additions you could buy on top of your sails that would be so cool, but I’ll still be using the DA sails on bigger ships till then
I would love a simple two-stats choice for sails. You want a cutout ? Let's trade visibility for speed. Less fabric on your sail, less wind you can catch. No pricing, just a simple choice between those two ways of sailing. That way you keep pricing for the pure cosmectic aspect of your sails only.
And then no one would use the cutout because speed is infinitely more valuable than visibility. Even something as small as 1% of reduced speed is enough to make you lose a chase and remove any kind of fight. You would also be completely destroyed by anyone with regular sails because you would never be able to catch them, letting them hit and run as much as they want until you are out of ressources
I like your idea! I would change one thing: Make the cutout buyable, but make slow the ship down by a little percentage. This way you dont have a giant advantage, but choose between more speed or sight.
I'd say just make it have a mechanical effect as well as a visual one. Have cutout sails make the ship a little slower. And then sure maybe you can apply it to other sail patterns, though I could see some issues accommodating that. But if people want better visibility, they should have to sacrifice something else. Just like choosing which gun to use, there is no 100% best option, you just have to pick which tradeoffs you prefer.
I thought maybe sot could add custom sail design where it gives you a long list of ship cosmetics and you can choose the color, design, and a lot more. And pirate legends can get more designs to show that they have been playing for a while. (The pl cosmetics would be a lot more gold.) and you could unlock more designs through ship milestones. And eventually you might can customize different parts of the ship. I think this would be a cool addition to the game
I dont see this as a problem. Also, funny to speak about a huge variety of sails, when you, yourself only use 1 sail 100% of the time. :) In my opinion they should just keep adding more sails in different shapes as the game will need more "gold sinks" in the future.
You're completely missing the point though. People won't pick a sail that creates a unique look for their ship that represents them, when there's a "meta" sail that everyone feels like they need. So all the sweaty ships have the same sails, and it takes a lot of variety out of how people customise their ships. Blurbs sticking to his own individual choice of sails whenever he plays doesn't take away the uniqueness of his ship, because other ships aren't using that same sail much.
@@plasmasupremacy9321 Well, I disagree. I have the "meta sails" but I dont like the look anymore. So I use other sails. Let people enjoy the "meta sails" untill they get bored with them. It doesnt take much time when you see "everyone" using them.
I like that idea, getting the cut out. I personally don't like the look of the dark sails I think they're rubbish but the extra visibility does mildly help For the person at the helm.
As 1/4 of the most expensive items in the game, the grind is simply rewarding. work hard, get em for yourself, and express the flex. I solo'd most of my way to DA sails, and I love them. You also note something about having cutouts available for all sails, rendering this entire video fairly contradictory ...
Yup SoT should make every sail an optional cut out, even make it a shipwright thing for x amount of Money. It would require 150+ sails being editable though
Paying for the cutout would be soooo nice. Sailing and not seeing where you're going at all can just feel tedious on large ships. Especially the Galleon. And I always use whatever sail fit my current ship cosmetics the most.
While I think having the cutout as an option on any sail would be neat, I would add this... I'm a programmer and have worked with 3d in the past. Typically the way this cutout is done is to have the texture (the sail pattern) contain an alpha transparency area that represents the cutout. This is why the DA sails give you the same speed as any other sail - they are all using the same shape model... but, they are filling it in with a texture that happens to be transparent in areas. I'm just guessing here because I don't work at RARE - but, I would assume that RARE would have to make two textures for every sail. One with cutout and one without. Then, the sail selection process would have to be tweaked to handle this switching of textures based on a sail modifier. Another way it could be done is with a texture layer that applies a MASK to these areas that need to be transparent. I'm only saying this to remind everyone that it is not as simple as "just put a button here that says USE CUTOUT".
I don’t see why people just use those sails same with just wearing a tuck outfit and etc they try to get all these advantages yet it’s pointless if you can’t hit your cannons you just gonna lose and for all you people saying it’s easier to helm well mate when you are in naval fight it’s uncommon to have all your sails all the way down unless on sloop most of the time they are raised
Honestly, you do present a lot of fair points. It is a hard to swallow pill. Especially since I actually do use the DA sails on my Brigantine, the Crimson Sparrow. However, I don't use it for the reasons most people think. I just unironically love the look of the sails, and I can do just fine with normal sails. I can simply have my crew call out to me on which way to steer on both the brig and galleon (I have the role of Captain / Helm). And on my Sloop, Assassin's Wrath, this is not a problem at all, as I honestly see little to no difference, so I end up using Magpie's Glory sails. And for my Galleon, the Storm Fortress, I use the Hunter Sails because they were one of my very first ship cosmetics. Though my crew sometimes uses DA on the Storm Fortress as a joke to mock sweaty DA players. And as for the rest of you Brig players, I have a very simple solution... Just raise the back sail up slightly! It's not that hard! It doesn't decrease speed by any noticeable amount, and when you're in combat, you're most likely going to be raising your sails up anyway for when you are aiming your ship for cannon shots and staying out of broadsides / performing death spirals anyway. Not to mention it's for free. Update: Okay, so I might as well mention that I no longer use the DA sails for my Brigantine. I now use the Royal Revenge sails, since it suits the red and gold color scheme of the ship that I was going for. Plus, I've definitely started to care less about impressive cosmetics, only opting for maybe one or two impressive cosmetics per ship, while the rest are just Cosmetics to suit the color scheme and general theme of the ship.
i have to agree, ive been using these sails for the advantage alone, and sometimes really want to use other ones but the advantage alone makes the decision for the DA sails. ill accept any decision as long as Rare will change something. i like the idea of a cut-out being the extra addon
I think it would be pretty cool to have an option for the cut out of any sail but also how tattered you want them like the black pearl sails, basically just the regular black sails with holes in it.
Being able to put the cut out an all your sails is the clear option, but chances are it would be very difficult to implement given they don't have any shape modification options for the sails currently in place. They would most likely have to duplicate every single set of sails you own in your inventory with but with the cutout.
New player here. I honestly feel like i need those sails. Getting on a ship with those makes the sailing experience just better. I think your idea is the best solution.
They are bought with in-game gold, so it is fair in my opinion. If it had been via ancient coins only, then 100% that breaks fairness model. However, I do like the idea of paying for an applied cutout to existing sails. I agree that would bring back more sail variety on a regular basis.
If you could buy the cutout, youd just shift everyone to buying the cut instead of the DA sail and you still have players with coin at an advantage. They wouldnt make the cutout cheap. If you want to say that it reduces individuality, just change the default sail shape from square to V.... Or just make all the masts taller
I've played casually since the beginning of Season 1. I slowly saved up money (and spent a lot along the way) but finally bought the DA sails about a month ago. The small amount of extra vision was a breath of fresh air. I'm a competent helmsman and can work without them, but god damn does it feel good. DA sails have been called the fanny pack of the sea and I don't care. Turning them into a cut that could be applied to any sail design would be amazing. There is no reason for me to spend money in the emporium on sails that I'll never use because the DA feels too good.
We've been saying that once you buy them we should be able to apply the cut out to any sail. Personally I love the metallic silver on them that's why I continue to use them even if the changed it to apply to other sails. I get it though just remember when they have the whole da set and clothes they are likely not a threat haha
As a person who had a massive Reaper grind for PL all the sweaty aspects of the game burnt me out. Now whenever i do play I’ll just do missions, I’ll anchor my ship instead of raising sails, I won’t drop items and pick up items for speed, and I’ll rely on my crew more. It’s Joe the game was designed to be played and for me it makes it more enjoyable. So a cosmetic being better than every other cosmetic is awful. And I’m not a fan of it being able to be applied to other sails because it still gives an unfair advantage to the skilled putting them at an even larger gap with the newer players who Are already majorly disadvantaged. Just flatten the bottom of that sail out and keep the core values of this game.
I think your solution is probably the best one. Make it so that people can spend that same amount of money to have that cut out on any sales in the game. That way the people that forked over the money for the da sales don't feel like it's a waste. And that'll bring back variety to the ship sales. People that already bought the da sales can already have that cut out option unlocked for them
Hey Blurbs, I was wondering if you ever could do a guide on how two approach a non-moving ship, mostly parked on an island and ready to defend itself (If you haven't already done that) because as a helmsman on a sloop I never really seem to get that right and bring the ship into a horrible position. Like, what angle is the best, when to lower the speed and how to proceed. Thanks!
As a solo slooper i love the sails as it let's me see bird flocks a lot easier when doing merchant lost shipment quests. Then when it's time to rumble i look more badass to the noobs.
The price tag was because of the problem that had occurred at the time these items were added. You had pirate legends with every cosmetic and 100m+ gold very common. Dark adventurer items were meant to be a money sink to bring some balance back to the sea of thieves economy.
I think the game would be more interesting if you could customize your ship TO affect gameplay rather than just cosmetically. For example, you could change the placements of cannons on the deck, maybe even to protect the front or back of the ship. Maybe you could add gibs and gaffs to give you a boost when sailing against the wind. You could make this system balanced by only being able to obtain these options via achievements and commendations; you would NOT be able to buy them with gold or microtransactions. This could promote proper gameplay rather than lazy gold farming. It would give more variety to sea battles and teach players to strategize more effectively based on their or thier opponents advantages/disadvantages.

That's a brilliant idea.
I've been saying the same thing for a long time. I think there needs to be a new sail customization option which adds the ability to change the 'tattered' level from whole, small tear, big tear, and cut out.
No because the whole point of this game as everyone has an equal chance the only difference is experience
@@GrayGamerI do think cloth being a sail repair item would be interesting. If a cannonball goes through your sail, you lose speed but get a hole in the sail, which can be repaired with cloth. This hole (patched or not) remains aboard a captained ship

Easy fix. Just make the option to 'cut' the sails cost 3 or 5 times as much as DA sails lol. @@tobuutv4825
I think the real problem here is that players haven't adapted to a norm of trimming their mid-sail, and because of that has put a lot more emphasis on the "advantage" gained by the DA sails
I for one, would call the sails with rips in the middle of them cheaper than the DA sails, and more pay-to-win, because I've already answered the problems with the DA sails in my perspective, but rips in the center of the sail (like kraken) is an advantage that's unafforded by other sail sets
Food for thought.
I’m personally not too bothered by the dark adventurer. I feel that it offers such a minuscule advantage that would only prove useful in a very specific scenario. If I get sunk by a dark adventurer ship, it wasn’t because of the sails
that is a good point, but the point of changing the problem is to have people's personality shine thorugh more, rather than everyone using one sail
@@layker4039 I totally get that and find it unfortunate that as players we’re kind of forced to decide if we want an objectively tactically better option or to actually use the cosmetic system as it was intended.

Get in the habit of trimming mid-sail while you play! I've never used DA sails in my life, and likely never will.
Trimming midsail has tons of benefits outside of visibility

Agreed, I'm sure real sails on a galleon are higher and wider, for the exact reason that if they're low enough to be obstructing the helmsman's view, they're being hit by less wind over the stern
Also triangle jibs look cool
Also also, Far Eastern style sails when?

Average Classic Sail Enjoyer:
I saw a similar suggestion on reddit a while back. Let the cutout be applied to any sail style, but I'd take it a step further. Theoretically such a cutout would also have a physical effect, IE cut sails can't catch as much wind and therefore can't push a ship as quickly. Then at least we wouldn't only have everyone sailing with cut sails. You could also introduce other types, like Light Sails that make you move the slowest but also don't collapse a broken mast when you lower them.
That's a great idea, they'll probably implement another social media "mystery" instead though lol
They would have to be free though. Because of how sea of thieves is equal opportunity for day 1 noobs as day 5000 sweats
TOTALLY agree. I hate the sails, but the benefits on the Brig are so significant I feel like I have to keep them a lot. Never have it on my sloop…
Couldn't agree more with this. Outside of allowing the cut on all sails. I would scrap it completely.
Using this logic we should remove tuck outfits and gun skins with better iron sights because they give an “advantage” ☠️
Yes either make the cutout available for any sail or just change the design to make them like normal sails. It’s a dumb advantage but it really can make a noticeable difference
Yeah we should also make it so pistols have the advantage of having sights as well as cannons being able to customize their shape.
I got another solution to the DA sails, even if it'd be a bit difficult to implement:
They give you an advantage, so they need to give you a disadvantage to counter it and keep it balanced.
I'd prefer they simply change the DA sails to be more in line with all the other sails in the game. Remove the cutout.
and blind every helmsman on a brig and galleon? no, they should let you put cutouts on every other sail as a option

Also im not helm for my boat but I have tons of other Sails I'd like to use, and do on my sloop, but really almost aren't competitively viable for bigger ships.
I just like how they look man. I agree they should add cut-outs tho
I agree 100%
Just remove the cutout, I want more sail variety on the seas
I'm on board with the cutout idea, would love to see more colorful ships out there
Long time viewer, first time caller. Paying for the cut-out on any sail is brilliant, good call. Thx for all your hard work
Have them extend the sails so it doesn’t provide a beneficial gap at the bottom, that could solve the problem!
Great Vid and I totally agree with you! The sea’s can be colourful again!!
Chance the sail to have no cut out and give people half of the gold back
The DA Set was introduced solely because Rare had been doing nothing for months to even a year with their in game currencies, on top of adding the emissary system, gold was damn near pointless.
Agree 100% with the cut-out being applicable to any sails for all the reasons you said. I've said it to crewmates many times in game
another idea: sails could have a set of cheap cutout patterns you could buy, similar to hairstyles and hair dye this would allow for another level of customization while also having the cutout just be another add on, there could be a torn pattern maybe one similar to real pirate ships, also making them cheap, maybe 10-4k would mean anyone could access the cutout
Sail cutout as extra cosmetic sounds like great stuff actually...
Alternatively, just adjust the cut out so that the point of V comes as low as regular lower sail and the flaps go lower than usually to keep that V shape. It'll be cosmetic disadvatnage now.
My idea was to reduce the amount of sail that's cut out on the DA sails but this idea is so much better!!
I would say just make every sail have the cutout or alter the DA sails so they hang lower so that the cutout does not increase visibility.
Yo I love the idea of purchasing the cutout separately. I just hope Rare gets wind of that idea and puts it in the game.
Omg I totally agree with you! I'm so sick of tired of seeing those sails everywhere wnd everyone I sail with HAS to use them. So annoying.
I like that idea, getting the cut out. I personally don't like the look of the dark sails I think they're rubbish but the extra visibility does mildly help
For the person at the helm.
My crew and I talk about the idea of cosmetic cuts for sails at least once a day. 100% agree
I think it would be pretty cool to have an option for the cut out of any sail but also how tattered you want them like the black pearl sails, basically just the regular black sails with holes in it.
The cutout idea is amazing! to be able to pay and apply this to any sail as a cosmetic kind of deal is my dream now
I'm glad more people are talking about this. Everytime one of my crew wants to put on the DA sails I wanna smack 'em sober.
Being able to put the cut out an all your sails is the clear option, but chances are it would be very difficult to implement given they don't have any shape modification options for the sails currently in place. They would most likely have to duplicate every single set of sails you own in your inventory with but with the cutout.
A cutout option would simply be another seperate cosmetic item. Instead of just sail there would be sail image and sail shape.
New player here. I honestly feel like i need those sails. Getting on a ship with those makes the sailing experience just better. I think your idea is the best solution.
It would be so easy to fix DA sails too. The only cosmetic advantage that should exist is different ironsights on the flintlock/cannons.
I agree, but also with how things are, the DA sails do give a nice easy indication that the approaching ship will be super sweaty
Just charge for cutout customization. Removing things from the game is ridiculous.
They are bought with in-game gold, so it is fair in my opinion. If it had been via ancient coins only, then 100% that breaks fairness model. However, I do like the idea of paying for an applied cutout to existing sails. I agree that would bring back more sail variety on a regular basis.
This is an amazing idea man, I think that would even allow more customization, especially if they made it so more items could appear damaged or smth.
Slight alteration of your proposal for a fix; Decouple sail shape and sail print/design. Let people choose any sail shape with any sail design.
Great idea about buying the cut out option for any sails you own, hope some devs see this.
Having multiple sail shapes could be neat
I think your solution is probably the best one. Make it so that people can spend that same amount of money to have that cut out on any sales in the game. That way the people that forked over the money for the da sales don't feel like it's a waste. And that'll bring back variety to the ship sales. People that already bought the da sales can already have that cut out option unlocked for them
I appreciate how you make suggestions for adjustments and fixes along with your opinions. Cheers!
Thanks!
Shoot a boarder over to the island that can sneak onto the ship and create chaos there before your ship arrives to fire at the now undefended ship.
@@Xaltotun but when we don't have the time for that and are already sighted? :D
