  • Excerpt from the seminar: 2 Days in Oslo, November 24th 2017: Illness and health in a toxic society
    www.iopt.no/en...
In the seminar, Dr Gabor Maté draws on and weaves together cutting edge science and real life stories within the topics of:
    Addiciton
    When the body says no
    ADHD
    The biology of loss
Only when compassion is present will people allow themselves to see the truth. Compassion for the fact that we`re unconscious, that unconsciousness is a response because it was too painful to be conscious when we were young, not to blame ourselves for what we did as a result of that, but to be compassionate with ourselves, not to fault ourselves, what we did to ourselves and others, but to be curious to why we did it.

The are several drivers for burgeoning ADHD diagnoses and medicalising so-called unwanted 'behaviour' but when distilled, it comes done to three things: narrow focused schooling which fails to support learning gifts and differences (leaving kids unfulfilled, distressed and depressed;) parental exasperation in coping with the demands of relationships, work and finances and, most importantly, generational trauma experienced by grandparents, subsequently their adult children and then...grandchildren. I applaud Gabor Mate and his deep insights into the topic of ADHD. Things will not improve until we recognise and deal with trauma. Keep up your brilliant work Gabor. We need your voice.

But we have to take into account trauma on the cellular level. Our cells have memory. Baby in the womb picks up the trauma from parent as well.

Genes don't change in five years?
This will take some elaboration because, in some ways, they can. Mutations can alter DNA in the short term but can also be heritable as markers. Gene level mutations do occur as well. This video may be too short to understand exactly what is meant by that statement, but in and of itself, it's at least, inaccurate.
I can get behind what follows, however - particularly the loss of community within our increasingly modern societies and culture.

I think he meant statistically there is a significant increase in diagnosis in children within the past 5-10 years. Yes, if we look at genes and DNA in each individual there are mutations and changes within a 5 year period, but when we look at the genes in an overall population there isn’t normally such a drastic change in such a short period of time -example: a genetic increase in disorders such as ADHD in the overall population, which I think is what he was specifically referring to.
I do agree that some of his reasoning is oversimplified considering how many components there are that cause disorders and illnesses, but I agree with his overall message of community and healing traumas + stress before having children, etc.

He said genes don't change in a population over five years. Populations change over loooong periods of time (evolution).

Can doesn’t mean will. That’s the whole point. You don’t get changes just because. It’s caused by environmental factors. I feel like people are unable to understand basic things the more comments I see like this

Maybe there is more understanding and less taboo. NORWAY has more appreciation of importance of mental health and healing. Is not because parents are more busy and stressed believe me. Society in Norway is less stressed now. MAYBE now they want to tackle the big estatistic they had on suicidal behaviour, norway was the country with highest suicide. Maybe you should now more about Norway. It obvious you know nothing.

Interesting. Could you elaborate even more?
