In this video, I explain how to make radio calls on the Common Traffic Advisory Frequency. I also discuss all the different services available when using a CTAF. This training is intended to follow the aeronautical knowledge areas in Part 61.105 section b for single engine aircraft.

I've been doing literally over 100 hours of studying and watching videos and this is the first place I have ever seen talking about the difference between unicom, multicom, and CTAF. I never knew that the frequencies were specific and that the you could get info from the FBO on a unicom. Excellent video, keep up the great work!!!

Yeah, even the pilots I know with thousands of hours don’t know the difference between all of them, but it’s actually kinda handy to know that 122.9 is a multicom because you can basically assume that there is no kind of service there, and if you know there’s no service at a field, the frequency is typically 122.9 because those are usually multicoms

At 13hours for my PPL and this has been one of the most intimidating topics for me. It already feels like there is "way too much" going on in and outside the airplane. Not to disagree, but what if someone is making calls ever 30 seconds and I need to speak up and tell someone to go around due to a hazard on the runway, but I’m unable to say anything because Joe blow is clogging the radios? I’ve seen A LOT of similar situations. It’s especially bad where new students are making unnecessary and unnecessarily long radio calls at small airports

Great video! The examples (with great accents) are clutch. I have a question about taxiing around the airport.. I'm familiar with making calls for back taxiing, but I've never flown into an airport with 2 or more runways. At uncontrolled airports with paved taxiways and intersecting runways, what calls should I be making? IE: when crossing a runway??
You definitely need to make radio calls when you’re crossing an active runway. I recommend making a radio call any time you think you might be a conflict with someone else.
Just wait until you do VFR flight following lol. I did a cross country a few days ago and they didn't have me change freq. until 2 miles from air port. Now I could have requested to switch freq. but I didn't think of that at the time....
Lol. Yeah, they’ll do that sometimes. If you tell them you have the airport in sight, a lot of times they’ll tell you to switch
I have never been to the airport you mention, but I have been to a lot of airports in many places and I have never seen one with hangers that someone would be taxiing from. Does Vinita have a large laundry facility near aircraft parking?
Not that I know of. It’s more common than you think. I operate at another airport out of North Little Rock that has the same problem. You can’t see the main taxiway from some of the older hangers in back
@@FreePilotTraining I apologize, what I said was not clear. What I was getting at is that I think you mean hangars, with an "a", not hangers, with an "e". Hangars are used to store airplanes, hangers have no real use at an airport, except maybe inside a hangar.

i’m only a couple hours into my private training, having some issues remembering eveything to say, should i try writing it down on an ipad and saying it or is there a better way?

If i want to landing at airport and my altitude is 7000 ft and airport pattern altitude is 1000ft, when should i start to descend to traffic pattern altitude, before 10NM? 4:14
Good question. Try “Altitude to Lose x2.” You need to lose 6,000 feet and 6x2=12. 12 miles is ideal for a small trainer plane. For faster planes, you can use “Altitude to Lose x 3.”
When we call-Traffic, us different to Tower, by example - Vinita ground at the begining and at the end vinita - but in a tower controlled we must use - Vinita Tower at the begining and our airplane id at the end just last numbers- i am right?

What happens if you are flying straight in, in a runway? What should I say?
“Vinita Traffic, Skyhawk 3148x, 10 miles south, MAKING A STRAIGHT IN for 36, Vinita.” Just be aware, the FAA does not recommend straight ins. Making a video on that in the next few months

Great videos, although the made up voices and accents with your radio traffic is distracting to what you are trying to teach and throws me off what you are trying to say.

I like your videos but you lose me when your simulated radio calls get to that scratchy annoying point. That’s when I shut ‘er down.
