Yeah for real, ive just been using quarantine to be lazy and consume the content other people put out because theyre using quarantine to be more productive
@Some Peanuts: Singing it to yourself also helps. "Dun" is the eighth note, and "digga" is the two sixteenth notes. "Disposable Heroes", for example, would be "dun digga dun dun dun dun digga digga" Mike's machine-gun gallop (aka reverse gallop) would be "digga dun digga dun digga dun digga dun". The breakdown to "One" would be "digga digga digga dun" (or "diggadig gadigga dun").
It is pretty hard to play. I found out one thing that helps. I noticed that I made little pauses with my hand between the beats because I somewhat counted the notes and played them in groups of the beat. So I played 3 notes, then came little pause and then I played the other 2 notes and so on. You can imagine 3 notes and sing them at that tempo but your brain cant process the rest of the notes that fast. So when you struggle to sing something in a tempo you need to rely on your muscle memory. Those riffs is faster than your brain can count so you really need to concentrate on your hand movement. It is the only way.
I specifically use disposable heroes as my right hand warm up.. starting slow building speed and adding extra triplets here and then to tune in as well as accenting different notes throughout the riff.. practice over and over and that riff becomes 0 effort my dude.
It's funny watching some guy teaching this on youtube. I remember 20 years ago I had to go to my grandma's house to print slayer guitar tabs because we didn't have a computer. Lol I would print as many songs as I could, then I would go home, and sit in my basement getting high, and learning Slayer. At 13 my friends were pretty amazed watching me play Slayer. That was the year 2000. Good times.
Most instructors gleam over foundational elements, assuming the student knows and understands them. I greatly appreciate your thoroughness. This lesson was superb.
You should do a video on why Lars Ulrich was actually a good drummer in the late 80s/early 90s. He is a total punching bag for what he is now but people who don't really know drums or just like to pile on don't give him enough credit/slack. He has now become the most underrated drummer in metal.
This is so incredibly helpful. I always thought I couldn’t speed pick but it turns out it’s really just a technique. I always thought I just had to build enough speed but never came close. This seriously has been a struggle for like 15 years. Not knowing why I could never get close. This totally is a game changer.

When it comes to extremely fast gallop and stamina no one compares to Jon Schaffer. Just listen for example from Iced Earth’s Alive in Athens album songs like Stormrider, path I choose, pure evil and travel in Stygian. Iced Earth are an amazing band, especially in the 90s till early 00s
I just got my first electric guitar and the first song im learning is moth into flame and this helped me understand what the rhythm was, thank you so much!!!
In the Barracuda version should you skip the string on the unplayed second hit? It's "1 (silent e) and a." It seems like on the unplayed "e" it would be most efficient to skip that upstroke.
I love when metal bands do this but over the 2 top strings, more like a chord than single note. I don't seem to be able to get it down though. I think I need to tilt the pick back like you said here, my pick might be parallel which is why it's not working
Bro you actually helped me learn triplets thanks a lot dude. Also how the hell does that sg sound so amazing. All other gibsons usually don't sound that great for heavier music
I've been playing for a long time.. always used this in Lip Gloss And Black however always had trouble with the pick getting caught. THANK YOU so much i didn't realize I needed to tilt the pick. Love this video!
I cant believe this worked, basically just imagining it as two downstroke with an upstroke in the middle did it for me. Not quite as fast but im getting there.
watched a few vids on this. this was my favorite. love how you put everything together, the onscreen, and even mentioned PICK POSITION! i'm new, but as i was noodling, trying to do some strumming stuff, i noticed fast strum was easier if i spun the pick past the pointed tip. excellent stuff!
I was watching one of your videos yesterday and was literally going to request a gallop-method tutorial. When you're playing this, I keep hearing Battery! Hope you are going to enjoy #MetallicaMondays!
Yes that's the reverse gallop you demonstrate. Gallop is an eighth followed by 2 sixteenth notes so it's a downstroke, downstroke then an upstroke. Second is the proper gallop.
1:16 i literally said “are you fucking kidding me” bc i literally understood what to do the second you demonstrated. i’ve been trying to get this down for a year of my life holy shit thank you

Funny that the Heart version came much more naturally to me than the Slayer version. To this day actually. A good way to check how good you are at this (especially at this) is to double track a 10 second gallop against the metronom and then listen back if the two tracks together are consistent. I'm driving myself mad... but I will forever refuse to quantise my cuts. "Rhythm riff, take 136..."
Thanks for another great lesson. I always get my pick caught when trying to play any riff that has this sort of picking. Would really like daily gallop routine or EPA on this
I saw the title and got excited with the Metallica kick you mentioned in the other video that you'd also cover the gallop in The Four Horsemen. I find even after all these years I fall back into playing the first gallop section as single notes (7 5 7 5) rather than including the open E on the down stroke. Some tabs includes it, some don't, but I grew up with the Cherry Lane tab books where its included. If you do any more Metallica tips and tricks vids, hopefully you have some tricks to help keep the open E in there and sounding good.
I like to think of the first pattern as the Slayer gallops like you say (reminding me of Raining Blood) and the second pattern as the Iron Maiden gallops (reminding me of the Tropper Verse riff).
Thanks for the neat video! Could you talk about diatonic chords and gallop, when to use a power chord rather than a single note, can other diatonic chords work ? With examples from actual songs it'd be awesome. I've been experimenting but cannot get it right and I'm not sure if it's because i'm sloppy or if gallop should really only be single notes.
With that guitar, you sound more like Hardwired than Raining Blood hahah Awesome video, helped me. I'm having quite a difficult time with this technique

This is basic Metal guitar playing.
MY tendency is to start with a upstroke instead of a down stroke so im about a minute in and already backasswards.
