When the character described that a riom they were previously without the circular mold patterns on the walls. My thoughts wondered if that was a detail to lead a listener to consider that the mold was a indicator of a passing of a long time pass or an alternate dimensional time shift.
Windered lif i was on to something with that thought.

Is he in the submarine or research ship? Only small, compact subs go past 1,000 feet let alone 20k+. The pressure increases in line with the total surface area and displacement. Large submarines can't withstand the immense pressures involved. Imagine the weight of a 1x1ft cube of water, then stack hundreds or thousands on top of that and you'll start to realize just how much pressure water exerts.
