I first relocated my family from Maryland to Oregon in 2016, and our first week here we saw a Stellar's Jay. I may miss the bluejays of back east, but what a Stellar tradeoff!!
Love this. We had a female Stellar's Jay who could imitate quite a few different birds. I think she could even do a Douglas squirrel. I used to hear a squirrel chirp but she was only one around. We used to call her L.T. short for Lieutenant Uhura, the linguist of Star Trek fame.
I just now had a Stella'sJay bring a small white stone to my deck where I put out sunflower seed for the Juncos and Sparrows. The Jay found out about it my spot a few weeks ago. I have heard accounts of Crows bringing gifts to people who have fed them but did not know about Jay's doing the same. .
They do this at the nest to to keep other pesky birds away. I noticed when I approach the tree with the nest the calls stop. In our neighborhood the jay uses the Eagle vocals
A couple days ago I heard an unfamiliar call in the cedars near the bird bath; I ran the call through Merlin (bird identification app) and it identified the call as a Cooper's Hawk not just once, but several times. When the bird finally came down from the cedars to splash in the bird bath, it was a blue jay. Its impersonation was so perfect that it even fooled Merlin!
The dark eyed Juncos are just little guys. The SJ in my feeders just flies in and the other birds scatter. He needs no trickery there but the acorn woodpecker is king of the feeder and waterbath. The SJ is just a bully to smaller birds but bows out for a woodpecker. I posted numerous SJ videos
I have a stellers jay here in oregon that mimics 4 different bird calls that I can make out. Whenever I see the chickadees and goldfinches scatter away, I know he is coming.
Our blue jays do this here in the mountains of North Carolina. I have chickens so I’m always listening for the sound of a hawk. They’ve fooled me frequently. They are hogs alright because they will continuously hide peanuts in areas thinking they’ll return to get them some day but their “bird brain” forgets where they hid them.
i have stellars that do the same thing. the less friendly ones that don't like getting to close to humans will try and do it to scare us off. albeit their hawk/eagle caws are not nearly as close to the original. i love how smart they are.
Old comment, but I just witnessed our steller jays shriek like the red tailed hawk right in front of me and went searching online to find there's at least a few videos now! I was blown away because literally the day before I stopped feeding them peanuts out in the open BECAUSE I thought there was a hawk nearby! Little did they know they screwed themselves that day lol.
I've had literally hundreds of blue jays to our tray feeder, but sadly not one Steller's. Maybe others are more fortunate. I only see them among the evergreens of the mountains.
we got a couple pairs in my neighborhood, and oh boy, do they have a serious beef with hawks, heck, they will call in all the crows and even the pair of ravens to harass any and all hawks that come by
All Steller's Jays make that hawk sound. But they don't need it to get to the feeder, they are the bullies of the feeder and do as they please. I don't know why they make the hawk sound, but it will fool a new-comer. (ME!)
Please do not mislabel species in clips you choose to feature on your channel. The bird in question is a Steller's Jay _Cyanocitta steller,_ and not a Blue Jay _Cyanocitta cristata._ Please correct your labeling.

I love Stellars....so smart, sassy, and beautiful.....I've heard them also alert other birds when a hawk is approaching the area.
The Stellars Jay is simply stunning

.
That's because they're in the same family as crows: Corvidae

So beautiful when the sun hits their feathers. I did not know that they trick birds with impressions

Both Blue Jays and Stellar's mimic Hawk calls.
Jays have quite the reputation for mimicry.

Yes that is a stellers jay! Nice video!
Wow, what a beautiful bird and a very clever one as well.

How do Steller's Jays prep for the apocalypse in an English pub crawl?
They actually screech like a red tailed hawk too. And I’m surprised that I can’t find a video on UA-cam with one doing it.
ua-cam.com/video/E1yU0BtzSwQ/v-deo.html This isn't quite what you're looking for, but it's one that's imitating a red shouldered hawk 🙂

Great video. Love it! But that's a Steller's jay (not a blue jay), as he says in the video. Why not change the vid's title then?
Thanks for answering the question I had. Clicked on this thinking...”that’s not a blue jay!”
Im a little late but I knew it wasn't a blue jay because I have a nest of them in my back yard
Maybe because most people don’t know that difference and when they come to this video they will learn a new thing.
I've had literally hundreds of blue jays to our tray feeder, but sadly not one Steller's. Maybe others are more fortunate. I only see them among the evergreens of the mountains.
Are you deaf?
It's duplicitous...dare I say...diabolical...dare I say...devilish...no, no...dare I say... _devious_
pretty sure that a stellars Jay or something
So cool to watch my bluejays in Antioch ca.
The gtewat to the delta
Great video but why does the title say Blue Jay? That's a different species.
Amazing and brilliant, thank you.

dark mode blue jays
Isn't he absolutely beautiful 😍. Corvids are smarter than some people I know.
Just caught a baby that came from the nest. Cant quite fly. Only as good as a chicken maybe lol
It’s funny how he looked at the camera then did it
A "Jay" used to mean a stupid person, hence "jay walking"
And technically it is a Blue Stellars Jay, or a Jay that's blue. Quit being angry because you can't control something. Stay humble

The guy in the video even says its a steller's jay how can the person label it as a blue jay
He's probably from the East coast from where I'm from.
True. They are different and not the same bird.
I've witnessed this in my own back yard.
i'm making a feeder cage so only smaller birds can get in so it's tactics are futile lmao
both the video and description say steller's jay and yet the title is still wrong HOW DO YOU DO THIS
Humans do this too, with machines in crop fields
Please do not mislabel species in clips you choose to feature on your channel.
The bird in question is a Steller's Jay _Cyanocitta steller,_ and not a Blue Jay _Cyanocitta cristata._
Please correct your labeling.
it is a seller jay
Silvers gaming Just because Steller's autocorrects to Sellers doesn't make it a Sellers Jay.
😍😍
That's a stellars jay... not a blue jay.
Why is an Englishman doing a show about Pacific Northwest birds?
He's allowed to whisper excitedly about our birds. They're for everyone.
