The snell knot was originally invented in Great Britain for eyeless hooks. It keeps the fishing line aligned with the shank of the fishing hook to preserve strength. It should be tied on hooks with a bent eye so that the line can exit straight without a kink. It is an important knot in multiple hook rigs.
Advantages:
Very strong attachment to hook retaining 95% plus line strength when tied well. No knot sits on the eye of the hook. Can be tied on eyeless hooks which is handy in a survival situation.

liked and subscribed, as a grown man that grew up without a father it a sad to have to look up this stuff, thank you for your video.
Yo join the club on being fatherless I had teach myself a lot of shit bro
+lonnie estrada no shit mine died, now I've got this BS replacement
Chivo Ramirez I feel u bro, we had to teach ourselves alot that others take for granted
Chivo Ramirez Me too, do you want a pat on the back a medal and for someone to tell you everything’s gonna be okay
I miss you son...
This should deserve a like more than twice. Short, straight to the point and no talking for 10 minutes.
Foreal! Some extra talking about alternative turns or differences in how different lines hold the knot, but all that extra "conversation" is not needed.
Other youtubers:
Ok but before let's talk about why fish exist
I Agree with you! Straight to the point.

Amen thank you for this short and informative clip
nice video simple and effective. million thumbs up for using a thick rope so it can be seen better.
Wow just seeing this out of the box ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxQr1yd4Zc6qJF-scTB6Zb9dQbVpviuRxB recommend I have yet to fish with this set up, but based on the first hands on appeal, I can tell this is going to change the way i pack and carry to a whole new level. If you fish like i do, you know the smaller and less stuff the better. I’ve added a photo of just some of my gear so you can see how serious i am about fishing.
this was so helpful, no bad camera position just up close and straight to the point. Thanks!
Needed a good way to tie a hook, this was the 1st video to pop up and I see why. Nothing crazy, easy to tie and simple, straightforward explanation. Great video, thanks for posting.
Thank you. Your tutorials are really helping this single mom look really cool to her young son when we go camping and fishing and I actually now know which knot to use and how to tie it. 🙌🏼👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
A bit late but did you catch something?
One single mom who is here for the same reason - your comment made me smile. We are not alone. My boys wanted to fish and it was my job to learn and take them. My comment is 6 years after yours. I hope that you’re doing well and I’m wondering how your fishing adventures have gone.
Hands down best demo of snelling I've seen. None of the twisting the wrist, line etc. Thank you Whyknot
This is literally what i needed. As a person who grew up without a father, thanks for showing me how its done!
I’m a boy mom (single parent) who didn’t grow up with a father. I finally successfully learned enough to take my twin boys (almost 6 years old) fishing - they caught several blue gill. I’m trying to learn more because these boys love to fish!
I tried this knot earlier but I was struggling. I’m going to practice indoors before fishing next time. I’ve just been tying a quadruple knot - I’ve only lost a couple of hooks so far 😅 Thank you for this video 😊
Great job Mom!! Fish On!!
Id recommend tylersreelfishing channel, lot of great content for bass fishing! (Also found where blue gill are)
@@jeremyjones6667 hey, thanks! I have perfected this knot and catching fish has been a success. They have mastered blue gill (and I learned how to set the pole) but now we want bass! They have each caught one baby bass on the tiny hook. They watch in amazement when they see another person reeling in a big fish. I’m trying to learn as much as I can. Thank you for the channel suggestion. I will check it out 😊
@@eringrey9297 just wait till their ready to upgrade to baitcasters😂 im 6 months into mastering it and lets just say i have multiple poles so when one is messed up i can use another😂
@@eringrey9297 might aswell get a cabelas/bass pro credit card and rack up some points!
Lost my dad to a massive heart attack 12 years ago and wish I had paid more attention to his fishing lessons. Thank you for this. Taking my son fishing today! We will both be learning/relearning some things.
Hope you guys had luck
Hell yeah good luck and tight lines
Thanks for a pretty good video sir.
In times past most all hooks we bought were already snelled. Now its much cheaper to get unsnelled hooks.
I've been using a variety of knots, but this one is easy and fast to tie.
Nice and straight to the point. Before i only knew how to snell with a pre-cut section of leader but now I can tie it with a fully intact line!
I use this method for splicing metal eyes on the end of rope as well as the hooks. I was taught it at school, 60 years ago. It's a very secure tie.
Thanks, worked first try. Learned this in scouts and got so caught up in growing up and adult life I forgot along the way
I've looked at several videos today and yours has by far been the easiest to follow and understand. Thanks for posting this video
I love fishing but i never learned to properly tie a fishing knot. i would always just loop it so much and the just be like "well that seems fine enough!?!" thank you for posting this ^--^
same still do
Awesome! Returning to fishing and this video raised my confidence I can tie knots. Thanks!
I love there are so much positive men in the comments talking how good this is😎✌️👑
Every single video on UA-cam should be just as fast as this guy
Thank you for showing me how to do this knot. Short , sweet and to the point
This video was just perfect and clearly ...i'm ready to go fishing
Beginner angler here, and this was incredibly helpful!
Thank you for using line that's easily seen on camera. You're a life saver!
Best demonstration ive seen on youtube. Thanks!
Yep
Defo bro.
Great video, quick and easy. You can tell WhyKnot is a dedicated fisherman just by how roughed up his hands are. Real fishing hands!
I'd say more than fishing.. You don't get black nails from fishing.. This man works very hard, manual labour.. I had those hands working on the building sites.. I'm a chef now so it's burns and cuts these days
Thank you so much I’ve been struggling so much with the knots 😣 thank you🙏
Excellent! Thanks for an easy to follow, straight forward tutorial on snelling a hook. Much appreciated. Cheers! BE
This was only way I used to tie my hooks as a teenager over thirty five years a ago! It is a very reliable knot, though I know and use many more now.
This was so useful as I’m in the dark on the beach fishing with just my rod, bait and line and my line snaps on a fish! So I wanted a good knot and hopefully this works!
I wish all videos were like this: straight to the point, no b.s.! Thanks so much!
Thank you, just learned how to tie my first fishing knot. Video was easy to follow and straightforward.
This is the knot I've been looking for!!! thanks!
There are different ways to do it I love this way thanks a lot bro simple easy and effective
Great that you used thick line to demonstrate the knot which makes following the instructions easier. Thanks.
My father passed away on March 11th 2024. I'm his only daughter (18 years old) and miss going fishing with him like I used to do as a child. To keep his legacy alive, I wish to learn the things he knew and didn't get to teach me. Tying a fishing hook is one of them, thank you for this 😊🙏🏽
Keep on fishin hon, it’ll be alright 👍🏼
I watched several other videos of this knot, impossible. Watched yours got it first go. Thank youuuuu!
👍 thumbs up , no nonsense!
Right there witcha Chivo! Been doing it for about 40 years now!!
I'm going to try this for sure. It looks way stronger than the classic fisherman's knot and has a very neat professional look to it. Thanks!
The classic fisherman's knot is one of the weaker fishing knots. The Palomar has replaced it as the go-to knot for most fishermen.
I use to only know one way to tie a hook to a line but now I know a faster, easier way! Thank you!!
I absolutely love this snell. You can tie it after you break a hook off or cut, no hassle. I dont care what the others say about it not being a real snell. Never fails, I can tie this knot to a circle with 100lb mono easily! Or even to 2lb line for micro fishing. Absolutely the best knot for fishing with bait. Thanks for having the only snell video I share with others! Everyone else does it the inconvenient way
this IS a proper snell not sure what yeah mean
@@Dogman-cs5hv no it's not. Traditional snells calls for both ends of the line to be free
Alright, I just commented on Fishing Knots video about this by using your finger to wrap the line around and it took me a few times just to get 5 wraps with 20lbs test. Your method so much more superior! Thank you so much for sharing this!
Thanks for this video. Can't wait to try it on our Wisconsin vacation!!!!
awesome. thanks for sharing your videos.
salaam peace
Cheers that was the easiest way to do it that I've seen so far lol Cheers!!!
Started watching poker’s videos and now I’m here...what a trip!
Awesome, thanks man I never knew this. Fished all my life and when I was young the three knot worked and I've used it since,I'll def try this next time.
Simple quick and straight to the knot love it
I don’t like 10 minute instruction that just talk about other things
The previous snell video I looked up was 14 minutes long! I ditched it and came here, much better.
I'm awake at 2am, watching this. Even tho, I NEVER went fishing in my life.
Ahmed Ali 😂😂
Your missing out
G0BLiN oh yes he is!
Maybe it’s time you do!
It's a sign
Thanks for a great no frills how to video!
Excellent impartarition of knowledge. Knot tieing is an important task and skill to learn.
Good Job. I learned both the method you demonstrated and the "Twist Method" of snelling a fishing hook.
Keep up the good work!
Wow....love this
You are too sweet. Thank you.

Great video, I was getting tired of the uni knot on my hooks coming loose. tks
How many times did you loop the line thru on your uni knots? Only time I had a uni slip is when I was lazy and didnt leave enough tag end once, and didnt bother to re-tie... 5-8 loops works fine
Nice vid, have used this knot for all my J hooks and have gone with the Trilene knot for trebles on all my Avoidasnag's, seems to work well
All jokes aside, i tried this knot today fishing for some catfish and it worked great. Thank you.
Thanks to this Video I was just able to put a hook on my new fishing rod😀 This Video is amazing also I subbed and liked the video Btw My name is Zachary Carnicelli 😀
I like how people will even thumbs down a fishing knot. Jesus.
bulldogs7177 😂😂😂😂
Gets worst the video it's on point it's the best way, it's short and to see better he did it color line, so wtf it's wrong?
because those are the sort of people who go, "You don't wanna do it like that..." then push in and proceed to royally fuck your shit up. That's who.@@hugoquaresma467
Because the are afraid knot... LOL
Yeah hahaha there’s some touchy people out there
I'll try this out tomorrow after a long time of 0 fishing, thanks a bunch.
That is what I used to do in the Mediterranean year ago before coming to canada
Thanks for reminding me
Very secure way and easy!
Wonderful. Such useful information for the fish BDSM im going to do. That sexy mackarel sure aint escaping the foreplay this time!
thanks for showing me how to tie a hook because at first i did not now how
Me either 😂
@montanadoctor this dude fukin typed in the dudes name and typed : lmfao dumbass
Thanks to you my fishing day wasn’t cut short
No more chit chat, just straight to the point..Thank you
Weird recommendation, but definitely helpful 👌🏽
I trust this man because of those smashed fingernails lmao
My 13 year old son followed your video and did the knot great the first time! 🎉
That's awesome, you should watch some more videos and then can teach him yourself and gain that extra bonding time. I say this because that's what I'm doing with my daughter.
This is the very best way I found on the Internet!
Thank you
Thx I chose fishing for my end of school year activity and well first time fishing so I would have been screwed
the whole reason for a snell knot is to have all lines inside the barrell, the way its done in the video exposes the main line outside of the barrell making a weak knot
Simple and easy great video
Aussie bloke for the win. No Seppo upspeaking bullshit, straight to the point.
That’s easier than way I do it. I always started looping around my Bend from top. Does it matter?
Damn I've been doing it all wrong and the hard way 😂😅..👍🤔
Best snelled knot I've done so far thanks!
Thanks man. I havent done that in years! 🤙
Are smells stronger then the uni knot?
yes
Wait.... You need to use hooks while fishing? That explains a lot.
Bait sometimes helps to
Easiest and best I've seen so far
Thanks
When I was growing up, a Buddy’s Dad showed us the improved clinch knot which I’ve used all my life. Never even seen a snell knot tied. I thought they were done by aliens or faeries.
uhh did he say 'after you've lubricated the line'?
please tell me i'm not the only one that heard that lol
yeah he did say that, normally you need to wet the line to prevent heat damage
Gob Oil !
yeah you usually put the knot in your mouth 2 lube it up; helps prevent heat damage and helps the knot become as tight as possible
At least he didn't say "moisten"
This video really needs an AI voice and to drag it out for 10 minutes.
That would put it right inline with every other how to 🤣 W comment lol
Perfect tutorial. No music no bologna. Straight and to the point. 😊
@@wallytuescher2175 I guess the comment was lost on you 😊

The best description I’ve actually seen and understood
Wonderful video. Straight to the point and actually easy
next a how to on smashing your finger tips with a hammer. WTF dude lol
Ur a jerk but kids be kids
Shout out to everyone here without a dad 😅
Thank you sir for the simple way to learn this knot. Gotta try it on my next trip
A little hard to get it right. But I learned it I use this everyday I'll never use a different knot. Love this video. Thank you very easy to follow!

super simple and easy to follow. many thanks mate
U made this look so much harder but still the best knot
Wait a tick. Are you telling me it's been this easy to tie a line to a hook all my life?!!!
Well done...no wasted time and excellent explanation.
Excellent video, directly to the point without blabbering. Still, no need to say “what’s up.”
Omg the only video you need watch and it’s a minute long
Thanks mate, forgot how to do this, thanks for the post..😎👍👍
Thanks man. It is super easy now that you shared that skill with us. 1:13 video, straight to the point (pardon the pun). BAM! New skill acquired.
thank you internet man now maybe i can impress my dad
Easy to follow. Clear steps. Thx a lot!
Perfect! Thanks a bunch!
