  • A new documentary on the Apollo 11 mission has been released, Including large amounts of new footage which had been sitting in the archive for decades. I bought a ticket to an early showing of this in IMAX last night and I wanted to put some of my thoughts about it on screen. It's going to be released initially to a limited number of IMAX theaters, but eventually to a wider distribution. I hope that some of this footage eventually gets released in digital form because it's the best footage I've seen of some of these events.

I just returned from watching this movie with my son. Here's my short review:
When I was a kid in the early 80s, I watched an IMAX about the Space Shuttle. To my right was an old man. During the movie I noticed that he had tears rolling down his cheeks. At the time, I couldn't understand. Today, I was that old man. Do yourself a favor and see this movie.

Just got back from seeing Apollo 11. I think It should be shown mandatory in schools. Not for any political or whatever reason, just to state mankind can accomplish anything IF we work together.
It’s actual 70mm footage remastered so it looks better than stuff today. It’s also edited in a way it’s like a Hollywood movie. 5 stars in my opinion but I was born the day Apollo 11 got out of quarantine and I’ve been a space cadet ever since! And THEY show them planting the flag! GO SEE IT! 🇺🇸

Apollo 11 in IMAX was the best "Apollo experience" I've ever had. Really amazing what they did by editing all that great original footage. Like a lot of space nerds, I've seen so many documentaries that I basically have the entire dialogue of the descent memorized. And yet, I was still gripping the handrests of my seat in the theatre wondering "OMG, are they going to make it?!"

I was lucky enough to be at KSC for the launch of Apollo 16. The day before they took us by bus out to the pad, well within a few 100 feet of it. The mobile service structure was still around the Apollo 16 Saturn V. You could feel its power even though it was still not fueled or powered yet. An amazing site. The next day my group with thousands of others were taken to a viewing area by the countdown clock seen in all launches, Apollo and Shuttle for LC39. It was an electric atmosphere. When the countdown reach near the last 10 seconds, you see the flames steam/smoke flowing out fast and growing. Then you start to hear the wildlife making panicked noises, then the ground start to shake, then the sound hits you with a thunderous roar that you not only hear but feel. It pounds your chest and shakes you. You watch that mighty Saturn V start to move trailing flames that are longer then the rocket itself. You watch it pick up speed and move quickly away, you can watch it till first stage separation and the sound and vibrations have faded from that Earth shaking thunder to a crackling sound growing fainter and then an erie silence except for the wildlife and the communications from Houston and 16 blaring over the PA system when there was talking. Amazing how many people were crying and wiping the tears away (me included). Truly a moment in life to remember. I am hoping to regenerate some of that when I get to see this movie, if it ever comes to IMAX in Canada, failing that at least on my 55" TV. I live less then 10 miles from IMAX, come on IMAX people, you must have pull, bring it here. lol

Been awhile since I saw it in Imax but one thing that shocked me was at the point of lunar landing Armstrong's heart rate was something like 180 bpm, which showed how stressful it was. His heart rate at takeoff stayed below 90 bpm! Buzz on the other hand had normal resting heart rates for both takeoff and moon landing. Either he has a heart of ice or he really had confidence in Neil.

I'm 58, so this is reliving those days. THIS MOVIE WAS AWESOME! What I loved was that this was not a typical documentary, with a narrator and interviews. This was all archival footage, beautifully arranged and formatted. Considering the low quality of film and video of that time, the restoration done for the IMAX format was incredible. I the 16mm film of Armstrong on the moon, you can actually see his face (not great enough for a police lineup, but at least it wasn't just a reflection). This movie is 1000% better than "First Man."

I had the same feeling as I watched it last night. I wanted to pause, rewind, and watch scenes over again. The footage of the vehicle flying just sent chills ups my spine. Seeing all the different company names on the white-coats of the guys at the command reminds us of how many companies, now gone participated.
I also liked the part where you had 3 astronauts waiting to launch who were relying on 3 guys to fix and bypass a valve problem on the booster. It showed how what a team effort Apollo was. Those two technicians and a safety guy were just as important to the mission as the guys in the command module.

Just saw it today - Scott, you nailed-it!
One thing that REALLY struck me - as the top of the LM approached through the CM docking window during transposition and docking - the metal surface of the LM was DEFINITELY flexing - I assume in response to the "puffs" of the CSM's RCS quads. Wow! That's thin! That gave me a totally-new sense of how "razor's edge" the whole mission was - and the subsequent ones.
I was age 8 when I watched the Apollo 11 mission "live" - so I never imagined that my emotions could be taken "back in time" almost 50 years - I am SO grateful!

That landing was seen at about that quality when I watched it live, on TV in Australia. The signal was straight from the dish antenna, to the local broadcast stations, who relayed it live. It was sent simultaneously from Parkes to NASA, who received that feed with some inevitable degradation, and they then proceeded to lose the original Ampex video recordings. Armstrong setting foot on the Moon, whilst not great footage, understandably, was somewhat easier to see then than as it is shown now. Thank goodness someone has at least found the 65 mm movie footage of parts of the Apollo programme! I'm looking forward to seeing this documentary. Thanks for the review, Scott.

l saw it last night at a local theater. And loved it. I was 8 years old at the time of the landing, and remember watching at a neighbors house on the black and white screen. In this movie, the voice of Walter Cronkite floods the memory of that time and era. Buzz, Neil, and Michael look a bit nervous during the suit up, yet their heart rates during lift off were 80 - 100 beats a minute. The movie points out the Neil's heart rate went up to 156 during the landing on the moon. The onlookers at launch from the nearby beach is classic, almost look filmed in 3D - gives you a total recall of the late 60's clothing styles. The music score is top notch and builds during the movie. You will walk away from the movie realizing just how complicated this moon mission was, and how everything had to go right. And how amazing we pulled off this feat. A great part of the film - when the lunar module is on final decent to the moon surface. You see the altitude, speed and minutes of fuel remaining. I thought to myself man they are really high up with only 2 minutes of fuel left. Then as it is getting closer, your eyes are darting at the fuel, altitude, and surface. With about 16 seconds of fuel left they touched down. You get completely wrapped up in that moment. Another moment - the Saturn rocket is rolled out for launch, and the guys on the ground walking with it, smoking their cigarettes. There were so many times you realize after watching this, that something catastrophic could happen at any moment, yet these guys and all the NASA people pulled it off. Just incredible. Wish everyone could see this.

50 years ago, I was 14 when 11 flew, I've followed the space program since the Mercury astronauts were named. Sitting, no, glued in front of the B&W TV all through the 60's. I built every model available on the space program, built and launched Estes rockets, the whole nine yards, what a wonderful time it was to be a kid....... Since the Internet, I thought I'd seen most everything on 11, certainly not so! with this film, I almost flipped on the footage of Neil on the moon where you clearly see his smiling face through his helmet visor. That and so many more clips I've never seen before and with such good quality. We've now come to see tech as not that much to see, but I was raptured back in time when I saw those 60's vehicles and thought of the enormous leaps in technology Apollo brought us during that time. What a HUGE accomplishment. Also, when I looked around the theater, most of the people were my age and there wasn't a noise to be heard throughout the entire film. And yeah, I caught Johnny Carson in the crowd.

I was taken aback by your comment that Armstrong was the least experienced astronaut on the Apollo 11 crew...so I checked briefly to see what each crew members background was with regards to time in space. I suppose Armstrong's time as an X15 pilot qualifies to put him one ride ahead of Collins and Aldrin. All three had one Gemini mission prior to Apollo 11. it's all quite amazing! Love your channel!

Just come back from seeing it in the UK. Really enjoyed it too. The footage was so well edited and clean that it really felt that a window had been opened to July 1969. The spectators at KSC getting ready the astronauts getting ready. The lunar descent footage was also incredible. I have seen 30 second snippets before many times but this seemed to be a full 3 minute real-time clip. The way the view rotated and in one continuous shot you see the lunar module touch down on the surface. Went with the wife who usually hates anything to do with space but she said she that really enjoyed it!

On the contrary, we've had a human presence in space for well over a decade, the average astronaut back then spent like 2 weeks in space while the average astronaut now spends 6-12 months in space. Our major science satellites have been operating for over two decades, and we've had continuous presence on Mars for at least 15 years. I have a feeling Apollo era NASA would be proud of us.

I know for a fact that NASA did use the Hycon 72 and 73B cameras for the lunar pass on Apollo 10. These were also the same cameras used in the U-2 and SR-71 Blackbird spy planes, and yes they took incredible images, something like 24K in today's digital world. And there was a variety of other film and digital cameras used varying from 16MM to 70MM. All the still shots taken by the Astronauts were with special Polaroid 35MM still cameras. And it took a lot of trial and error by Apollo 17, the last mission, they got it right. Just for this mission, RCA made a special color digital camera. One was mounted to the rover and controlled from NASA the other was on a tripod and also controlled by NASA. These cameras continued to broadcast signals back to earth from the moon until the finally stopped working many months after the crew had left. Gene Cernan, Harrison Schmitt and Ronald Evans all took some incredible photographs. Neil, Buzz, and Michael on 11 had the first go with the lunar cameras. They were not even sure if the cameras would work on the moon. NASA was more on completing the mission they taking pictures, but they knew they needed proof and a future refrence, so it was decided to go all out. The original TV broadcast camera mounted on the LM was I think 120x120 resolution I think and black and white image. Those images that little RCA took will go on forever.

Just got back from watching this, and felt compelled to add a "Yeah, what he said!" to the end of everything Scott said about this movie. I loved the utter lack of the normal sort of interviews and dumbed-down voiceover explanations you'd find if this were a more traditional documentary. They explain enough by use of the visuals and smartly curated radio transmission dialogue to keep your average Joe from being completely out of the loop while still leaving me with a very distinct impression that this movie is definitely intended for us space heads. I especially loved how they handled the whole sequence of events from the end of PDI to touchdown... ~3 minutes of real-time camera-pointed-out-the-window descent, houstonapollo radio dialogue, a real-time display of remaining fuel and approximate altitude (plus a cute little blinky graphic for each time a 1202 or 1201 program alarm got thrown).......... and that's it.
