Plot: The film follows Nancy Stokes (Emma Thompson), a retired schoolteacher and widow, is yearning for some adventure, some human connection, and some sex. Good sex. Whilst her husband Robert provided a home, a family, and something resembling a life, good sex was never on offer. But he’s gone now, and Nancy has a plan: she will find adventure with a sex worker named Leo Grande (Daryl McCormack). In an anonymous hotel room Nancy greets Leo. He looks every bit as good as his picture, but what Nancy wasn’t expecting was conversation as well as fornication. Leo has a view on everything, and though he may not always tell the truth, Nancy finds she likes him. And he likes her. With growing sexual confidence, Nancy starts to relax. Over the course of three rendezvous, the power dynamics shift and their well-worn masks begin to slip. Good Luck to You, Leo Grande is an uplifting comedy that challenges expectations. Nancy & Leo discover an unexpected bond in this hilarious, heartwarming, sex-positive tale of empowerment and self-discovery.

Daryl does something remarkable early in the film where he looks into the mirror and so much takes place on his face and in his eyes, that we realize he is not being "the vain young sex-worker". He is, in fact, telling us that he has a life and a past. It was singularly a brilliant and noteworthy moment on film

In that poignant moment “Leo” sees himself beyond what everyone sees: a gorgeous man. He was looking at what was underneath, his flaws, failures, who he really was, not at Leo Grande.
I loved the scene where Nancy asks if he will take his shirt off and if she can touch his shoulders, etc..the way he answers her with a quiet whispering voice...pure genius. Awesome movie!

I thought the film was quite, moving. I loved it. I grew to empathize, and understand, both leo and nancy. The true humanity of them both. It removed all the stigma around sex workers, and Aging. It was beautifully made. Well done Emma Thompson, and Daryl McCormack 🙌🏽❤️❤️❤️
I watched this film cold - not knowing anything about it, just thought I'd probably like it because of Emma Thompson. Then we meet Leo Grande...he was such an interesting character, masterfully played by Daryl McCormack..wow. The slightest glance from him without even dialogue, was filling in his story. The way he delivered Leo Grande..if anyone ever spoke to me like he speaks to Nancy, I'd be in (happy) shock. The writing and direction of this very different film was outstanding. I heard it was done in 19 days. Unbelievable commitment from all involved. After the dust settled, I pictured poor Daryl McCormack having to fend off every woman of a certain age, who saw this film. Irresistible is irresistible.
You cracked me up about Daryl having to fend off women of a certain age! And I'm one of them lol! His performance was outstanding. I hope he gets some awards for this. Chemistry doesn't happen all the time on film (see the new West Side Story-which I did really like-but no chemistry between the leads) but Emma and Daryl were so believable as these characters and so great together. Always a big Emma fan, but can't wait to see more of Daryl! Loved the interview! His mother must be beyond proud!! (after she got over seeing her son naked on film...)
Absolutely FABULOUS film. Brilliant performances from both Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack. Great script. Great acting. Great direction. This movie is more important than people might realize. It shows the true nature of the honest, helpful side of sex work. In its simplicity, sex work is very much a part of health care. Very similar to good nursing, or good mental/physical therapy. It's about time that we supporters destroy the myth that sex work is seedy and shameful. Nobody deserves to be lonely. Single people DO NOT have to be alone all the time. Nobody deserves a life without orgasm. Nobody should go through life without experiencing some version of intimacy, even if you have to pay to experience it. Much like a great massage, sex work can be life changing and body affirming. This is a great movie to address these ills in our society. Brava!

Just watched this back to back, and I connected with both of them. I do think that a woman’s pleasure is put in the back burner and not given much thought. And the movie did make me ask the question why is it illegal to pay someone for sex if they’re providing you a service that you’re requesting? Amazing movie!!!

I just watched the film. As a 50 year old, I expected to connect more with Emma’s character. However, after watching and learning more about Leo, I discovered that I related more to his character. I was hoping there would be more of a dialogue about how Nancy might have ever thought about how hard life would be for her children, instead of her deflated feelings that her children were a drag on her own life. Bravo to Daryl’s portrayal of Leo! I understood his self-apprehension, from the first scene. I love this film. Thank you for the effort. ❤️
I too enjoyed the film a great deal. I think we might be still too young to be able to relate to Emma’s character. I’m 48 basically the same age as you. And I feel we grew up in a time that was much like today. open to sexual freedom and enjoyment not like it was for women in their 60’s and 70’s. Where they were taught sex was a dirty word. Not for everyone of course but for most women.
I liked it because whenever we see sex work in film it’s usually women being the sex worker. So it was interesting to see what their interaction was like. Of course their acting was incredible too. That helps lol lol I can say I’ve never thought what it would be like and how the male sex worker would act. It makes sense though lol. It was just so interesting to see the differences and shows us what people are looking to get out of these arrangements. As A woman I’d think most women don’t have to hire them because it’s easy to find men wanting to have sex. But I guess times are changing. And some people might either not be able to meet that many people or this arrangement would work better for them with no real ties if life is too busy for a relationship.

As a 64-year-old woman who has been sex-positive since my teens, I'm here to respond to your comment about lots of men available who want to have sex: there's a significant difference between the numbers of men who want to have sex with someone who's 48 vs someone who's 64 (unless they look like Emma Thompson).

I watched this film 2 weeks ago, texted my bestie about it, and watched it again. It was so unique and totally believable performances from Emma Thompson and this newcomer Daryl McCormack. He brought a relaxed and nuanced performance to the screen. Brilliant acting, great script - excellent directing. LOVED IT!!

This movie was one of the best movies I have seen in such a long time. I thought the acting was superb and the content extremely important. Yay to Sophie for opening this view of what being with a sex worker can be to their clients with the world or at least those who see the movie as well as aging and sex in general. Nancy presents as the person who needs human connection at the beginning but it shifts to Leo's needs . Hence the title. Really good characters and acting from both.

With other actors I feel that this movie could have been sleazy/unbelievable or cringe-inducing but it was beautiful and honest with these two. Emma Thompson was so naturally amazing as always and Daryl McCormack has a serenity about him that just made both Emma’s character and the audience feel safe. Wonderful and brave film

This was a wonderful, thoughtful and "hopeful" movie. I enjoyed it very much! It was only afterwards that I realized I could never afford such a service as that and found myself thinking, "Must be nice to have the money for that kind of help." Hmmmmmm ...
It's worth every penny of it's price. Believe me.
Two scenes stand out for me. When Leo looks reflectively either into a mirror or out of a window and his expression deepens to this serious moment. And the end scene where Nancy looks at her naked body in the mirror. It’s one of those movies that I know I will watch more than a few times. The conversation about legalizing sex work was very poignant. Darryl is my sons age, yet still absolutely stunning and Emma is also beautiful and able to be vulnerable about sexuality, aging and motherhood within the character. Excellent performances. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

I watched this movie, he is a very handsome man, i have the hunch and strong feeling that he has huge future as being a famous actor one day, he did his part in the movie perfectly but jus need to add experience that he will gain the older he becomes… good luck daryl…will watch you through the years to come and watch whether my hunch wil be true!!!!

Very frustrating I kept having to rewind it then I finally put the closed captioning on! Seems like an avoidable ridiculous issue for an interview!

it didn't gloss over the hardships. It didn't sensanalise more than anyone else struggles. It was a caring portrayal of egsactly why sex work is so needed and what happens between client and worker. It just showed the work

This movie was great but I think you need a certain emotional maturity to truly connect with the characters. I enjoyed the cinematography very much tho, the vulnerability was too real I was not ready! When Leo is alone he is also self conscious but puts on a flawless act as soon as someone else is there that was relatable. Hum I also can’t omit the absolutely gorgeous face of Daryl. I watched this movie for Emma don’t get me wrong but sometimes I was really wondering does this guy actually exist? Lmao

What struck me about this movie is the story of Nancy and her marriage and terrible sex with one man her whole life. Describing their intimacy and how robotic and unfeeling and lonely it must be. This is a story of many many women, more than we like to admit and many more than we think are out there. It’s crazy to think your desire and sexyness should disappear somewhere once you reach a certain age. Those things are front and center for mature women and to think that you have been ashamed of yourself, ashamed of your body and terrified to look at yourself naked…let alone someone else should see you naked?! This movie is a savior to very many many many women. If these past two years hasn’t taught us how extremely precious life is then what the hell are we waiting for?
I would forward that m e n also can be caught in a rut - or policing themselves, so that they “are not allowed” to truly connect and be close to the woman they love. • Sex, and more important: Intimacy is still to this day, suppressed and twisted.

lovely movie but very unrealistic. such sex workers as leo don't excist. they all do it for the fast money and not cause they are passioned about their profession- that's so naive. i dont know how elite escorts are cause i never had the money for them. probably they are more educated and trained but normal sexworkers u can find online are mostly vain and rude and very unprofessional and unmotivated. not a pleasure to book them at all. also a woman in such an age who never had an orgasm, hard to believe. it only serves the story here.
Daryl is younger than my son, Emma is older than me. both gorgeous actors and the film is getting rave reviews and it sounds structurally a bit like Richard Linklater's 'Tape' w Uma Thurman, Ethan Hawke and Robert Sean Leonard - one of my all-time favorites. but. this 'sex work is empowering' thing ... is regressive bs, exploitation frankly, that gets repackaged and resold to every generation.
He's referring very specifically to the sex work in this movie. Watch the movie first and you'll understand. It's quite good.
At first I really liked it, but it began dragging and the dialogue started to get unbelievable. The entire thing with the waitress was a mistake and should have been left out. And her acting wasn't that great. I didn't like the end--what caused her to o? Was it seeing his utterly gorgeous body? That wasn't made clear. I guess they had her do it herself to show she didn't need a man to be happy but I would imagine that if doing it herself was all she had to look forward to, it would seem rather sad.
In the end, it's not a film you would bother to see again.
It wasn't graphic as I thought it was gonna be (it is Emma Thompson after all so it will be classy). Same observation with this movie at the end cause I didn't see the point of her hiring someone if she did it by herself. Shoulve just made him take off his shirt off or run around naked if that's what gets her. I like the first half of it, the second half seemed like it lost the plot a bit and got a bit preachy. I watched this for Emma but I stayed for Daryl. :)

The film was very poor. No chemistry, impossible conversations, unrealistic interactions and didnt need to see Emma in full frontal! The waitress needs to go back to acting school.

I truly enjoyed this piece of art! The actors were amazing, mesmerizing and coming from an ex nude dancer when 18 for a short time to survive financially. I also am part of an association for emotional support that is just for sex trade workers and nude dancers ex or active. I tried when I was extremely stuck financially to be a sex trade worker once for sex and I had to numb everything, the second time it was just for company, a late dinner at a nice restaurant and sleeping together in our undies without sex ( this man was a married out of town business man, extremely lonely and so very respectful.) I had worked in bars as a server undeclared cash/tips only at 16 years old after leaving an abusive home from a small town which was loaded with clubs and bars, after a while the managers and owners of the bars wanted to sleep with me in exchange for being allowed to work at those places so this is how I became a nude dancer out of town so to speak not needing to be sexually harassed by my managers/owners any longer. I am now a 58 years old female. I quit working in bars dancing nude after I joined an organization called Katimavik for nine months and worked declared in hotels after that till I married at 21 and moved across Canada and became a full time mother/ homemaker so joyfully, this was my favourite part of my life aside from now as a very grateful grandmother of 3 precious young children. I did not know at that time that the reason partly why I could not be a sex trade worker was because I am an incest survivor from 1 to 4 years old and could not remember until I was 45 with some verbal flashbacks and 56 year old with extremely painful visual ones.. I have CPTSD and am a high functioning autistic person diagnosed last year. Many individuals that are incest survivors can be sex trade workers easily due to this reason while others cannot only dance nude I discovered through this organization. When I watched this movie it was not painful to watch.. only very interesting, captivating as well as so tastefully done. I have never manage to go two months when single without sex, I always picked the wrong partners accidentally so since menopause hit 4 years ago I quit dating and sex easily due to hormonal changes and back injuries from my quadriplegic career of 15 years as a nursing assistant. I also feel that this type of movie is healing, gratifying and for elderly women like myself and I’m sure very encouraging and educating for some. Luckily for myself I attracted much younger men ( 22 to 29 years old or so) than I un purposefully which were just very short caring friendships and sex just a few times free of cost in my early to mid 40’s. Aside from my conscience as I have adult children, grandchildren and am not caring so much about my personal self gratification but rather the souls of the young men during those times as I knew it would never become a lasting relationship and I felt too old physically for them. Daryl McCormack is as a very gifted and handsome young actor/performer, he mesmerized me, I would love to see him in future movies. Emma Thompson is very beautiful and talented, extremely brave at the end when she disrobed in front of the mirror! I so applaud her for this as she gave us older women inner strength in doing so. Thank you so much Emma and Daryl! I so applaud you both!
