Wait.. a 7-FOOT TFO Ultralight? I recall a 6-footer that you reviewed, and a 5-6 that you featured in your giveaway...did Santa leave that 7 under your tree? Clever fellow that Jolly Old Elf. Hope you and your family had a great Christmas, Ethan. Treasure these moments - it won't be long before you're placing Charles' first fishing rod in his hands..undoubtedly followed minutes later by a lesson on the magic of the Ned Rig. :-) . Great to see you're still able to fish; as a life-long southerner I anxiously await watching you shiver and shake your way through some ice fishing soon. Thanks for another great video, and very happy New Year to you and yours.
Haha thanks man! Yeah I was actually lucky enough to get this free from TFO when they sent the 5’6 model for trout fishing. I now own three TFO ultralights sheesh
@@FishAnything thanks! I’m saving up for it and then I’m gonna start a fishing/ aquarium channel. I’d just like to say thank you so much for inspiring me to start ultralight fishing. It’s by far the most fun and exhilarating type of conventional fishing. I had a 16 inch walleye on the other day but the teeth cut the line! Also almost had a master angler crappie but then the paper lips got the best of me!
Nice work getting those ice cubes to bite. You definitely gave me a bit of an ultralight itch I'm more accustomed to steelhead. And the occasional trip to my local lake crecent in Washington state for some Beardsley trout. But you have me looking for a new ultralight setup. Haha
I caught some fish on that 2 lb xl trilene the other day. It was fun i used a trout magnet with a float. Then I swapped to my other ultralight with 4 lb test and throwed a double trout magnet rig out and caught a crappie, smallmouth, and like 20 rockos. I'm telling you like an hour before dark those fish were aggressive in this slow deeper creek. It probably helps that we've had unseasonably warmer weather here in NW AL. 👊👍
Dude so pumped for you to still have access to open water. That winter fishing is tough. I run a longer leader if I’m float fishing that way the knot doesn’t get in the way of the float or bobber stop.
Nice video, I actually went out Christmas day because as you said soft water. I'm located north of you in the Flint area and can't remember soft water during Christmas.
Ethan, try the phenix braid 3 lbs. Its absolutely PERFECT for UL fishing. Super thin diameter, doesnt hold memory, and no stretch for insane sensitivity. check it out! Kinda expensive, but will last a while. Got mine on amazon
Two things 1) I definitely need to remind myself to slow down and work an area before I move on this time of the year. It’s just so hard to do when you only have a hour here and there to fish. 2) dogs and babies is just straight magical.
40* down here in metro Detroit yesterday. Went out skunked. Was nice just to be out. Hope you and the fam had a good holiday! First Christmas with children always special.
Ethan, just discovered your channel and placed an order for some of your tackle! Looking forward to giving it a try and definitely looking forward to more of your content! Thanks and tight lines my friend!
I’m so excited, I just placed an order for a bunch of mule jigs, donkey tails and the juniors, and the horseflies. 😎 I couldn’t help but get a good variety. Gotta take advantage of the open water! Thanks for your videos, as always, they are THE BEST
Ya...... we're not like the States in Canada , New Brunswick (the maritimes) we have to wait till CERTAIN lakes freeze over and we're not allowed to fish open rivers or streams. Tried ice fishing before and it's not my Thing to do... 😆 It would be nice if that would change but never going to happen. I so envy you that you get the release during the winter months. Ya lucky dog.... Mike 😄
Hey Ethan buddy, hope you had a great first Christmas with your son!!!🎅👼🎄🎁 These are such magical times for your wife and you!👏🏻🙌🏻 Glad to see you landed a largie.🎣 I've been blanking since Oct. 30th.😔
Yeah there are pros and cons. The string type can sometimes slip which is a pain in the butt. But it goes through the guides much smoother than a bobber stop.
Awesome video! If you're looking for more ultralight to try out, I've always been curious about the Moonshine Rambler Series Spin Fishing Rod trout/panfish ultralight
🎣 Even though the fish you're catching are small but still worth it and still bunch of beauties. As long as you're having a time of your life and enjoying yourself, this is all that matters right there. We all caught some small ones here and there, I sure don't mind catching small ones at all. As long as I'm catching I'm happy and I'm very grateful. Have a Happy New Years, also I hope you enjoyed your Christmas as well. 👍👍👍👍
Hey man! Love your videos im learning so much. I just got a 6’ ultralite 2-6 pound spinning rod and a size 2000 spinning reel. I didnt know until i looked at my order that my spinning reel is actually graphite frame. i take care of my things but i was wondering is this setup a good start? Also i love to use my highvis braid so can i use the braid and just attach a flurocarbon leader or what would your advice be?
I personally haven’t noticed much difference in reels based on frame materials. As long as you’re buying from a reputable brand, I think you’ll be fine. I’ve got sub-$50 reels that I’ve put through the ringer and they are still kicking butt.
Great video not often do you get videos of what the person is using and how they're using it. And what the reason they're using that certain technique for. 👍🏼
What do your gloves say? Looks like teenage mutant ninja turtles lettering . I picked up a Fenwick hmx today with president reel , on sale at 129, figured the was a good buy, but reviews say the rod is a lemon, my hmx fly rod is great
I think that the smaller diameter spool helps the small ultralight line escape while casting easier. You would probably get worse casting distance with a giant spinning reel.
It’s predominately to cut down on weight and balance a rod better. Additionally, I use light line so I don’t need massive capacity. But to be honest I prefer a larger diameter spool because it gives me better casting distance and lower memory. Ideally, we would have access to shallow spooled 1000 and 2000 size reels. Would be better for UL fishing!
@@FishAnything I ignored the balance aspect, but you did not. 👍 The physics imply longer casts with bigger spools; but mostly the 'Memory' of tiny 🤏 slinky-like coils floating on water - explicit ruination; only had mono. 'PunOnPurpose'
Mate I also love ultralight fishing but more on shore fishing. I hope you update ultralight shore casting in future .. fish on
Thanks for the recommendation! Tight lines :)
Float n' Fly. 👍
Visual with precise depth control.
Exactly! Great little rig!

Great job! Thanks for the gear breakdown, I’ll put some of those rigs to work soon. Enjoy the time with your son, it goes too quickly.
Thanks Nathan! Definitely enjoying time with the little man, time is slipping by quick. 🤠🤯
fishing with karma isn't too shabby. nice video my man

Nice video, I actually went out Christmas day because as you said soft water. I'm located north of you in the Flint area and can't remember soft water during Christmas.
Hope you found a few! Always good to get out 🤠
Looks like you were playing 'shut the bale' most of the day. Glad you kept at it.
I shut that bale about 1,000 times lol. Glad it paid off
Right on! Good tips and way to catch fish in the cold.
Thank you! Hope all is well :)
Put a barrel swivel between your braid and the leader, and have your slip Bobber sit on top the barrel swivel.
That’s another option! Thanks!
Hell yea buddy, stoked that you still have some open water! Tight lines my friend.
Should be iced over here shortly :)
Glad to see you get out and catch a few. Hope your family and you have a safe and happy holiday season.
It was a great holiday season, thank you David. Hope you had a nice one as well 🤠🧡
I always think live bait with slip bobbers, ill have to give it a try with some jigs maybe some nibbles and scents!

@@FishAnything that’s what I’ve been doing on my chances. I found a crappie hole on a local lake. Mostly dinks, but yesterday I got a good one.
Nice man! No ice here in southern Ontario either… You’re giving me some motivation to get out on the bank though lol
Hope you got out and popped a few 🤠

I use the same sent paste in the winter. I think it helps.
Idk if it helps or not but it certainly gives me a bit more confidence!
Alternative to a short leader or straight mono, super long leader.
Yeahhhh probably should have done that!

Hey Ethan how do I get that little tacklebox of all the different size hooks like you carry around can I order that of the site just like that
