Here Why The New Honda Civic Type R Sportline Is The Car We Asked For, But Not The One We Needed

  • In this video I'm driving the Civic Type R Sportline - the result of many people's requests to have a slightly toned down version of the Type R. However, I ask whether the car is now improved, made worse - or if it fails to do enough to justify being called a new model?

The latest Type R is the first car I would modify to tone down the look, the amount/size of the the fake vents are criminal! The Wing wasn't even the issue, but giving us the choice is the smart choice.

The sad thing is, this IS a high spec model. Fake vents are only acceptable if they are used in high spec models. And even then i just think, it would take almost no effort to just blank out fake vents with flat panels in the bumpers and things

The FK8 suffers more than any single car I can think of, of looking vastly better in motion and in the move than it does in pictures or even parked. For sure the FK8 has bold OTT styling we can't deny that. I own a FK8 Type R and I have to say on road it gets a lot of positive attention and thumb's up ... admittedly a large proportion of those people are teenage boys 😂. Personally I like the provocative design as it ignites opinion. You'd be mad to totally rule this car out purely based on looks. In Poland at least one of the dealers was offering this for new customers. Unfortunately Honda banned him from doing that and they're claiming that there's no issue and this modification (even just the shield) voids the warranty

We did get the saloon but only with the 1.0 litre. There are other major flaws with this review. Evo magazine actually named the CTR it's track car of the year in 2018 and one of the main reasons was because the weather was appalling and they said you could drive the car almost as you did in the dry. The traction was brilliant and the front end was as quick to turn in as ever. Next, I've not really heard anyone else complaining about turbo lag and being a Honda fan boy I've probably read every review out there including the one where Evo tested it against all the other major hot hatches including the Merc A45 (at £55k and another 100bhp) and the Yaris and this still came out on top. Next, to expect a manufacturer to change the satnav and some of the switchgear for one trim level in a model is just not going to happen. I challenge you to name another car where this has been done by any manufacturer at any price. Factor into the equation that this was a bit of a niche model that was on sale for only a few months and you make yourself look even more foolish. You also forgot to mention that the infotainment system has Apple carplay and Android auto which goes some way towards alleviating the crapness of the basic system. This feels like a half baked review that tried to take on a different slant but it just ends up being well, half baked and it embarrasses you. Must do better.

      1. I mentioned in this review, that grip with these tyres on in the wet is apparently much improved.
      2. I don't care what any other review said, or failed to say - it is laggy as hell.
      3. I wasn't expecting them to do it just for the Sportline, but to do it for the facelift would have made sense. Yes I know it has Android Auto, so does a £300 system from Halfords. It wasn't a great implementation.
      4. By the way, plenty of manufacturers have different screens/infotainment across trim levels (KIA do in several models)

My other car is a 997 carrera s so I know about engine response. The benefits of 20k miles on the clock perhaps. Furthermore, the aircon is extremely effective at all times and on a run I have seen well over 40mpg when sitting at 80ish. Again, an engine which is properly run in perhaps. Since when have Honda been working on this model for “several years” .. it’s had a slight facelift for the end of run, they’ve removed the wing and changed some cosmetics which is what happens when manufacturers do a facelift version (or LCI in BMW terms).
Not like several years of R&D have gone into it.

The Fk2 19 wheels with 245/35PS4S as fitted to the SportLine make a big difference to the usability and ride of this car on our pothole riven roads with no change in handling. If anything you can go faster because it's significantly smoother and your not constantly thinking about the next pinch flat or even new wheel. It's a £3K upgrade for an FK8 full-fat big winger but worth every penny.

When I contacted Honda about this issue they stated that this was a characteristic of the gearbox! As a result, I ended up rejecting the car for a full refund.

I miss the days of sports cars being 2 doors...yeah I get they dont sell as well but it just seems wrong to have too many doors on cars like this. Likewise, I get that modern tech is a mix of regulations and modern expectation, but it's just too much unnecessary junk on what's supposed to be a fun, engaging, visceral experience.

From watching this video James, my guess is that you will not like the GT3 Touring when you get to drive it on your regular test roads. I'm not sure about the 991.2 GT3 Touring, but I heard that the 992 GT3 Touring shares the same suspension settings as the 'regular' GT3 with a big wing. So what was meant to be a more subtle/discrete GT3 with a name that implies 'for the road', happens to have the same stiff ride as the track focused winged' brother. Looking on the Porsche configurator, the 991.2 GT3 Touring was pretty much a 'package' that you ticked in the option list, but for the 992 GT3 Touring - they made it its own model in the 911 line-up.

I agree somewhat with your thoughts here James. Honda should have stuck to keeping the Type R as an out-and-out B road monster, wing and all, whilst pushing the Si as the "grown up" sports hatch. That way they can still do what they do best with the R, whilst taking a slice of the Golf money. I'm surprised at the MPG though, as I manage mid to low 40's in my FN2 Type R and use it as a daily. That comically huge boot makes it far more practical than such a fast hatchback has any right to be. Couple that with it being the last generation of 9k RPM N/A screamer, and I think you'll see why although I respect and admire the later Turbo cars for thier raw grunt, I feel Honda have left behind part of what made the R something truly unmatched. Honda made a hatchback for those who are comfortable with being thier own person and owning thier passions, a subdued and meek design is the antithesis of that.

The steering in type R mode is not like concrete unless you got very weak arms - no problem with engine response either in my opinion - I don’t think it’s useful to have it all blaring in -the aircon in my type R IS so powerful it nearly freezes the screen up at the bottom. The issues I have with this review is about the perspective if you drive the thing fast properly fast it delivers in spades and the problem is that it does it so easy with hardly any fuss - which takes some getting used to because it is a bit to quite - you have to tune into the car to realise how good it is and it carnt be evaluated in a simple way like this - the car is to fast for normal uk roads these days - it’s a great piece of engineering that can do many things from dropping the kids off to cruising and track days - the only issue is it’s a bit to quite you don’t realise how fast it’s going

I think we're too spoiled nowadays. There are places in the world where just surviving the day is an achievement. And we are disappointed with the infotainment system. I don't know... Personally I've always driven a Honda. And if I compare an old Passat with corresponding Accord, WV looks just dull. In this segment also. I know what I like, and I'm obviously in minority, at least here in Europe.

    • @EleanorPeterson
      @EleanorPeterson 2 роки тому

Yep, very spoiled indeed! But don't forget that James is a motoring journalist, so it's his job to have ridiculous expectations and to find fault with things because he only has to live with most of the cars he drives for five hours or so. Details matter. If the sat-nav screen has lower resolution or slower response than his new (£1,500+?) mobile phone, it's a catastrophic deal-breaker.
There aren't any truly ghastly, undriveable cars for sale these days. Well, not outside the USA, at least [yes, yes, calm down, of course I'm kidding...] They all work well enough; most owners grow to like or at least tolerate their foibles, just as they'd get used to a spouse's funny little ways.
So... what else can a decent journo do but nit-pick?
After playing with £175,000 Porsches and Ferraris it's really, really, really important to point out how crappy a lesser car's infotainment system is in case poor people start to think that their nasty little vehicles are proper cars for proper people. That would never do; I mean, how would peeps know they were rich enough if auto-trash got ideas above its station?
So a car like this (rather pointless, overpriced, over-specced monstrosity) needs to have several conspicuous fails if the world order isn't to be upset. Hooray!
Remember all of Jeremy Clarkson's idiotic 'Cool Wall' garbage on Top Gear? Car ownership is all about status for some people, not getting around in relative comfort and doing practical things.
A driver's car used to be about driving, not cramming it with Merkin-style 'essentials'. No techno-crap, no cup holders, no air-con, no radio, no heated/ventilated seats, no parking sensors, no 'driver-assist' gubbins, no cameras.
If you're too hot, open the damn window, put your foot down, and stop whining. If the steering wheel's burning your poor little hands because it's not refrigerated, buy some manly driving gloves and drive.
Sigh. At least this thing has a manual gearbox. Automatics in Britain have always been viewed as expensive, clumsy, inefficient, inferior things for people with a disability. I hear that some countries still expect automatics as standard, though... 🤭
