Great story Harry, it is easy to forget that stars are people too and can have bad days. I photographed KD Lang on two consecutive nights for Sony in the early 2000's at the Opera house in Sydney. I had just witnessed an amazing show that she did with Tony Bennett and was looking forward to meeting her, much to my disappointment she was rude and abrupt. The next night she came up to me and said I am sorry if I was rude last night I was feeling really unwell, would you like a photograph with me ? I remember that if I encounter anyone being a little difficult in front of the camera.
Very interesting, sounds like quite a similar interaction! I heard in her later years she mellowed out from some big fans of k.d. Maybe Harry and yourself just caught her at a bad time. Thanks for the great comment!
I photographed an up and coming dancer/producer about 15 years ago,he was very rude, implying that I didn’t know what I was doing. It was a tricky shoot with him suspended on wires a-la circus training apparatus…the idea was to comp him in to a background of a very tall local building…like he was falling backwards from the building (also a shot of mine) at night…he made the shoot as uncomfortable as he could…Anyways, about two weeks later,I got a text from him asking if he could use the image as his personal profile image…normally I would have just said yes (it’s a small world) but his attitude cost him £200 usage this time…small victories!…Cheers for your vids,I’ve been binge watching them, great historical documents of a transitory world, that I experienced myself.(Mamiya RZ though)
Only yesterday I learned of a congestive bias we all have apparently called the ‘fundamental attribution error’. Apparently we tend to overestimate the influence of personality-based factors, and under-estimate situational ones - especially with people we’ve never met before. ie. we will default to immediately thinking ‘what an idiot’ rather then ‘must be having a bad day’… a shortcut that in evolution helped us not waste energy…. Top video Harry, love your honesty in all these stories - I’m properly addicted to hearing them!
If I said that in my job, I would be sacked. No matter how I was feeling or anything else in my life, no excuses. Still fabulous video and end photos, I could watch these all day :)
I was fortunate to meet David Bailey once. I asked him how he handled people that didn't want to be photographed. He said there were times when he just took one or two frames and then thanked them for their time! Legend...
@@fredandharryborden Thankfully no. She mellowed out a lot. She admitted in 2016 that fame got to her and she had her moments of being a diva and in her words, an a-hole. I've met and worked with her many times and she was always warm, sweet and kind, thankfully.
Hi Harry: Thanks for creating and sharing this video. I was glad to see your name show-up on my You Tube feed. It brought me back to your wonderful seminars that I attended while on a cruise ship in April 2019 in the South Pacific. Keep well. . . Keith (Canada)
I work in psychotherapy, and I have learned that when someone meets you and they lash out at you, it's something inside of them. As a therapist, I get excited when people lash out inappropriately at me now. It means that whatever's happening somehow triggers their issues, and it can be helpful for them to work through their issues. Of course, not by being mean to photographers lol
Totally agree! I’m a 56 year old with autism and so many stories like this could be told about my behaviour in certain circumstances! I have to say sorry so often, for comments that I’ve made when I’m triggered, to friends and loved ones, as much as strangers, it’s very hard to live with. This story absolutely screams neurodiversity! It’s more than likely difficult moments rather than days. I find watching these videos interesting as I’ve just taken up a camera again after many years of using a phone to snap rubbish during the digital era and I’m trying to find a way to express my diversity through photography! So far I’ve no idea how to do that but I’m looking for a way. I’m not a professional photographer but perhaps I’d like to be, portraits are probably the answer. I’m just nervous that I might do similar things on the other side of the lens and ruin the whole idea! I do feel that I could do something quite important if I can find the way! Thanks for sharing. This video could be used as a great way to show how, not only KD behaved at your shoot but also how outsiders interpret certain situations. Thank god for modern acceptance around diversity, however it will be a long time before a true understanding is reached! Thanks again, love your videos! If you know any professional photographers that might be interested in my journey I’d love to get in touch.
Hi ! I'm a french kd fan. (But I went into others hobbies for nearly 13 years !)-- Now I rediscover her music & discover new songs & videos, here. So, I've remarked that this year 1997, was a very busy one for her; An Australian tour, (with a great video of one of the Sidney concerts, where she had an incredible energy, dancing, jumping !) the release & promo of her album 'Drag', a trip to Japan, The Wembley Charity concert in summer...with all the preparations of these events & probably others ones I don't know ! So, she could be Tired at some moments...
I think it's the other way around. I know many lesbians, and not to over generalize, but most of them hate their fathers, or have really bad relationships with them. I can't help but think that there is causation connection between these bad paternal relationships and their sexual orientation. One of the friends I know best even said, "You are probably right, but I'll never admit it!"
Of lesbian women that I've met, despite my absolutely neutral stance on sexuality there have been a few that made me feel that as a male I am 'on trial' or there under sufferance. I've always assumed that women like this had most likely suffered from significant ab*se of one sort or another at the hands of toxic and/or homophobic males and are, at the end of the day simply more comfortable in the company of other women and men that they know and trust.
Merci Fred and Harry Borden, très belles photos mais vous aviez une muse très belle aussi. ☺❤ Très fan de k.d. encore maintenant.
Merci!!

What an interesting insight into the life of a photographer. Great work
Thanks, glad you enjoyed! Plenty more insights into other shoots on our channel!

Haha maybe he forgot about one of us?!

Haha nice! Probably a good way to handle it! Harry photographed David Bailey in 2011, maybe it'd make for a good video...
@@fredandharryborden definitely! Photographing a photographer!
Could be a great title! We will get on it 😁

Interesting! Is this sort of behaviour common for her?

Harry, is there now a chance too see more of the photos from this shoot? Or do they all belong to the Observer?

Have you thought of writing a book about all your experiences or even turning it into a play?
I'm surprised McDonalds gave her a break from working the drive thru window.
All she can say is:
Sorry?
What a joke!
Sad
