Enjoyed this one as always. Still laughing at Harry's attempts to subtly get Dominic West to get his shirt off, and then dropping the photo editor in it- in the previous video. I know I've mentioned before, but is there any chance of pulling out one of Harry's first commissions- would be great to hear how he managed it, overcoming the nerves etc. Maybe comparing to one of the latest? One of the things I've always liked about Harry's work is his ability to design images around the environment. To what extent is that recci'ing the location before the shoot, versus instinctual? My last suggestion is a bit left field, but how about a live shoot, maybe with someone up and coming. A live shoot would show all aspects of the things Harry discusses- people management and social skills, design, lighting, and the rhythm. Maybe a tall order, but we can hope. Wow. What a legend. Doesn't smile much though! I'd love a video where half is Harry talking about the shoot. And the other half, the subject looking back at the shoot from their perspective.

I was a young Canadian middle distance runner back in the 80s so Coe, Ovett, & John Walker were my heroes. Great story & photos.

2012 didn't reach anywhere beyond London, and definitely not up here in Scotland. Apart from that, your 'Breakdown' videos are magnificent lessons of the creative process in context and, of course, reminders of your work.

I was Team Coe. Then Seb stopped being a Yorkshireman, dropped what was left of his Yorkshire accent and became part of the worst Tory regime in living memory. Being a class traitor is unforgivable. 🙂

In some of the photos you can see that he was knackered. It doesn't show in the crucial ones, though, like the cover. There, his facial expression just reads as serene.

I was at University with Seb - he's a year or two older than me and I didn't know him, but you would see him running around the campus. I did know (Sir) Clive Woodward a bit though - he's a really nice guy. Have you photographed him? Coe's 800m WR was really special - it stood until relatively recently.

WTF have i just witnessed. I don't know this guy in the photograph world but he has to be the best storyteller ever!!! This is the first video i have just came across of his channel. I really love your videos and channel.

The relationship between planning and improvisation is interesting in your photography. You almost seem to plan on improvising. These days, commercial photography is so regimented. The creative work is often done before and after the shoot but not during. It's so much better to trust your spontaneity, which is why your photos always stand out, I think.

To put the great Holborn Studios into perspective, Helmut Newton called it ‘the Abbey Road of photo studios’ and he’s exactly right, I was there earlier this year, you walk in, see the famous Duffy portrait of Bowie, and everyone there EVERYONE treats you so well, so kind, so helpful. You can be a jobbing photographer who stays under the radar (moi) and be treated just the same as the big names. Harry probably has his name on the ‘one’ parking space 😂😂😂. Thanks again Harry & Fred for sharing your insights.

Agree with the sentiment of your title, but you’re a brave boy if you turn up without at least sone preconceived ideas. After a couple of the dodgy shoots in the early 90s I’ve always had at least a few preconceived ideas to get the ball rolling (or some variation of them) and get them in the bag early, circumstances permitting. Then i can go and play feeling confident and more relaxed and aim for something better. Ace as always. Really great to hear how others, especially of your calibre, approach the work.Thanks!

Perfectly sums up the topic and love the reference to "... wooden tennis racket!" Narrow-minded luddites relish back-seat driving new technology. Apt, given they're closer to the rear view mirror! For example, composited images have been around for 100 years yet some discard the results as not photographs. That digital cameras have freed the photographer from excessive time, cost and limited frames, post processing software has grown to become an equally powerful tool in the photographer's arsenal. Anyway, I like the way you think!
