- Today on The Skid Factory We're Getting That Datsun Difference by checking out Timmy's Vq35 Turbo Powered Datsun Bluebird.
Timmy has featured on the show many times helping us out with wiring and showing off his Datsun products from One Six Industries. He has a couple of cool Dattos and since we were doing some work on this one for him we thought we'd show it off before getting stuck into the job.
The Current setup consists of a VQ35 bottom end from a Nissan Elgrand with Weisco Pistons and Eagle Conrods mated to VQ30 Cylinder Heads with HKS MLS Gaskets ARP L19 Head studs, VQ35 Kelford Camshafts and Valve Springs.
Previously Timmy had fitted a GT35/82 (Too small) followed by an BW-S362 (A bit lazy) and it currently has a GT35/84RS (Turbine to restrictive) Timmy's always looking for more and ever-evolving the vehicle so stay tuned for next weeks episode where we'll be changing the turbo for a G40-1150

If I wasn't a Kiwi, and air-fair wasn't insane at the moment, I'd love to be there.
Sounds fun but im in Tassie Bugger cheers 🍺🍻🇦🇺🤝🇦🇺😎👍
I literally live across the road from the venue and I can't afford tickets this year, I'll keep my eyes peeled for the crown on the street cruise though!
Car isn't ready again lol
@@aaronshaw1784 bugger mate, gee I feel for ya, but thats the bigger problem for everyone also gold mine prices on tickets, cheaper tickets more people lets be honest, hope someone can maybe help ya out, be a great video guys, just Saying Aussie Aussie Aussie oi oi oi 😮🤫😂🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺😊😎👍
I think I had bluebird PTSD. So many near death experiences back in the day thinking we were professional rally drivers on our P plates 😂
Both you (Al) and woody are welcome to pitch up a tent in my backyard during summernats. I've even got a spot for the crown
Nothing like a couple of mates helping each other out. Great stuff!
So rad getting to pay back Timmy for all his help. He has one beautiful Bluebird!
i rememeber back in 2013 drooling over the build thread of this when it had the vq30det in it. forums were such a good source of info i would spend hours and hours reading builds online and i learnt more on there than they teach you at tafe doing an apprenticeship lol
VQ's are some of my favorite engines to build, both N/A and for boost, and I love that we are seeing such a monumental surge in unique content/interest (...chicken/egg... whatever, you guys get it haha) revolving around the VQ platform!!
Thankfully, I expect that it will only continue to grow in popularity, at least here in the States. Especially as the vehicles that are powered by the VQ's are settling squarely within the price range that make them attractive to first time car buyers, or tuner-car buyers, alike. Combine the low financial barrier to entry with the fact that almost every VQ Nissan manufactured was built to power a RWD (OR AWD!) platform (350z-370z-g35-g37-m35-q50-etc) straight from the factory...shiiiiit. These build options alone really has me looking forward to the future of what the performance automotive industry will have to offer. :)
Then, once these VQ's start to lose relevance or become hard to come by as the years come and go, all of a sudden the VR platform(s) will reshape the scene just as the VQ is now, and if you can't get excited about 400+WHP and chu-chu sounds with 100% stock components running on pump gas with a simple reflash of the OEM ecu, you might be in the wrong place?!?
Can confirm having fun in this at powercruise!
After Tim broke it he was an absolute GC and gave me his pit pass for the remainder of the event.
Legend!
Timmy’s a legend! Can’t wait to see how the datto runs with the bigger turbo. You just can’t beat an old Datsun sleeper!
Love these sleeper car episodes, keep them coming. Cant wait to see Hoff at the dyno doing his bit!
I still got my first car, owned it for 27 years now ... 82 Datsun stanza sss. turbocharged L20. one day I'll spend silly money getting it back to its former glory.
Love the archive. These old dattos are awesome. Thanks for the rundown Al
Timmy is such a nice dude too love his 510 as well
I ordered the sticker after watching this! Can’t wait for it to arrive all the way from Aussie
Awesome dato and awesome to see mates helping each other out.
Brings back childhood memories as we had a Bluebird estate until some idiot didn't know what the middle peddle was for at a junction.
what a mad little bluebird, we use to have one back in like 2000-2002 as a sort of learner car in our family. such a nugget.
Epic build. Knew a guy in QLD who had a U13 AWD Bluebird with ~600hp SR20, was a build before its time.
The old Dattosun. Beautiful ride. Cheers.
I had one of these Bluebirds as a teenager around year 2000, drove around a field all day long
Can't wait, been in some fast bluebirds before but this is going to be something else!
Thank you for creating such awesome and informative videos Al and Woody. It's really calming watching you transform parts into mechanical perfection and a bloody good laugh as well.
I have been working on my project car on and off for a few years after watching your first turbo install videos Al, with Marty and Moog, which inspired me to get tinkering again. I grew up in the bush in Southern Africa working on enduro bikes. I was so happy when you started your own channel.
So using all the info from your and MCM vids I turbo charged my old family hatch back Nissan Almera 1.4GX N15 (GA14DE) with a Garret GT15 Turbo from an old BMW, using Sentra turbo racing exhaust header, 1.6 Sentra fuel rail + bigger injectors, catch can, fabricated a down pipe to link up to stock exhaust, air/fuel sensor + guage, intercooler from the same wrecked BMW + BOV + boost tap, and added a Perfect Power SMT8L piggyback for fuel/timing. I also did a head gasket change and replaced timing chain + guides. She went from 80hp NA to 120hp, scared to push it harder without upgrading internals.
It’s been a great journey, and she is all working sweet now, just fighting with 27 Yr old bloody stock immboliser system ironically that intermittently drops sync with the key chip, so working on how to bypass it at the moment.
Thanks again, you are legends!
Looking forward to this one, I used to have a Bluebird TRX back in the 90's.
For me this is one of the more appealing projects. From the video it looks like the ultimate sleeper. I can imagine a Hellcat or Z06 pulling up beside you, what an opportunity.
This will be EPIC to watch the series on this car and can't wait until the Hoff gets his hands on it 👍
VQ30 is one of the best motors of all time. I have seen many with over 500,000 miles. Nissan also choose the VQ30 over the RB in their race car in the 90s.
I remember being taken out of school at lunchtime by a friend, his mum picked us up in her Bluebird, with a blue velour interior. She punched darts the entire time, hotboxing us all the way to the pub for fish & chips, before being taken back to school for the afternoon. That'd never happen these days.
She had to pick you up at lunchtime so no one saw you getting in the POS after school. Truly terrible cars they were.
My younger brother had one of the wagon version. Wasn't built up, but he had it for a few years. Would be awesome to see someone owning a Datsun Stanza. Haven't seen one of these since the mid 9's.
Love a good datto,my dad bought me a 510 for my first car in 95.i put a l20b with side draughts and headers and got a Navarra 5speed and Subaru 3.7:1 lsd.such a fun capable car to drive as a teen
Nothing better than mates helping mates, even better still if you all have different mad skills.
Love your work brother... cheers from Illinos im USA
The last one of the these I had was $60. Was a wagon I sprung over diff the rear leafs and some front home made strut spacers. Great bush car.
Things wayyy crazier than I thought it would be.
Oh hell yeas! 910 bluey in the beige. Absolutely love it guys. Fantastic
I've seen it around town and knew it was something special
Best video ever. I still miss my Bluebird
I remember as a kid, one of the blokes up our street had a Bluebird that he jammed an XF Falcon motor & box into
Love work for the boys.
Good on ya guys .
Love ya work Timmy.
That's going to be a great upgrade for the Datsun!
Ah yes finally a 910 Bluebird on the channel, my Dad had one as well, they were very popular growing up in Trinidad in the 80’s, fellas did everything with the L-Series engines and some actually got SBC’s swapped in as well. Would love to get my hands on one now 🤔
I love these.
I had a white 84 TRX model with the big BLUEBIRD TRX stickers on the doors and the boot spoiler.
Had the dash out many times to get the digital gauges working but was a fun car for a P plater.
Unfortunately 5 weeks after selling it I discovered it got "drifted" into a tree and the body became a banana.
What a great survivor 910! My old 85 Seires 3 GXE held on for a while, but it started getting rusty around the C pillar. I wish I had another one, but seem few and far between these days.
love the build reviews !!!
As a VQ enjoyer, who also owns a supercharged G37. This is a really cool swap.
Definitely would LOOOOVE to see what rolling around inside a running MS55 is like, mine has been broken since i bought it. See you at Summernats boys !!
My mum had the 84 model, flogged it often, was a great car💪
Nice car Timmy!
Merry Christmas 🎄
Love the history snippet.
The original Bluebirds of the 80's were terrifying . Very soft suspension and the OEM autos were extremely slow.
They were a good looking car in their day however and it difficult to see one without thinking of making it a Group C replica.
I'm new here and REALLY enjoying your channel 😎
It imported here to the U.S. as a model 510. Lot's of people modded them and raced them in one venue or another. It was very iconic in the 1970s and 1980s.
This will be cool to watch.
Good to hear one is going to be tuned by Hoff again
Love this my dad had one
Al, I can actually smell the Bluebird 🙂
I had my white and green 910 Turbo rally car on the Coast for years and then put the Z18ET, Haltech and IRS from it into a road shell as a second family car. Even after that, my eldest son used parts from those two cars for his P-plater Bluebird.
Hopefully Timmy can stop the Aussie shell rusting and keeping him awake at night with bits falling on the ground 🙂
It smells of mildew and vinyl, doesn’t it? 😂
@@TML34 Yup 😁
Thats a cool thing, plenty of power for a small car indeed !!!
Alan every time you talk tech it just impresses the shit out of me you have probably forgotten more than I know . Keep up the good work big fella 👍
Yeh mad go the 910. I can remember a feature on this car way back when in the ol zoom mag cool to see its still around
Loving the Datsun. My first car was a 88 bluebird. A great car if you liked working on cars, always something to fix.
You had an ‘88 Bluebird? Which country was this in? I think they had replaced those, with the Skyline-bodied (R31) Nissan Pintara’s in Australia by then.
@@paulsz6194 it was in Oz. I might have the year wrong. It was the last of the bluebirds, whichever it was. It had a 2.0l twin spark inline 4. Rear wheel drive. 5 speed manual. The headlight enclosures were all clear, rather than having an amber indicator lens. Had nothing but trouble with it, but your first car is supposed to be like that I think. I enjoyed my Ford Telstar more.
@@james.vanmaanenberg
1985. After that, the Pintara with unleaded engine was released.
Nissan!
Merry Christmas and happy new year boys enjoy
Awesome vid guys I want a VQ35de in my hyundai van!!
looking forward to summernats ...hopefully we will see u there
best mechanic in australia
Really good build for to make it really sleeper 👌
In the UK it was called the Nissan bluebird and the turbo ones were rapid fast 😁👍
Bless us Turbo Yoda
My first car, memories.!
My dream is doing this to a 2 door hardtop 🤩🤩🤩🤩 I grew up with one of these, a 82 diesel (L20D). The most bullet proof engine ever: at 400 000km it didn't heat a glass of oil each 5000km. Also the most clear dash ever, specialy at night. Torquey but such a snail! It had IRS in Europe so handling wise it was very similar to the small BMW and Mercedes of the time (front mc pherson and semi-trailing arms at the back)
A school of drift!
Nice, now I can't wait to see it on the dyno..
Wish I could get to Australia to witness all of that goodness. 😢
I hate the VQ35 because of straight pipe 350z people but this is cool as all. Love it. Great review.
I've hard getting rid of the AUSDM live rear axle and swapping the factory IRS setup in makes the handle very good.
That's awesome 😎🤘🏻
Definitely a cool Datto !!
Great episode guys :-) Go TF Dato!
In a former life, fitted Turbo's in the early 80's ... We did three new car Turbo Bluebird TRX conversions for a local Datto dealer..Red , white and a blue car.... HKS Turbo, 5lb boost blow through set ups .... Cant say I was a fan of the TRX's handling ..
Mint.
man Bluebirds so muhc fun
You have to go back, to go Forwards! 🤘😎 Hold onto your old cars folks 👌
working on my own S1 bluebird here in bris, ol stroker l20 dcoe webers, side pipe, s13 front end, r31 rear.
square bodies ftw
I owned an 84 TRX which ended up with quite a bit of work done to it, FJ20, big turbo etc... Looked like a George Fury car. Loved that thing, why did I ever sell it.
On the ad they were called Australia's 4 cylinder Limo, seen a series 3 for sale just the other day, looked all original.
Cool car we called em bluebird widetracks here in NZ even used by some coppers ( I should know they booked me in one 😂)
My uncle bought one of these back in the early 80's from strathpine Nissan, brisbane
Damn makes me miss my Datsun bluebird
See you at the Nats boys 👍🏽
i used to had a bluebird 910 SSS coupe some pairs of years ago, wath a reliable car, and pretty sporty too
My datsun got sr20det engine....superb handling...
Nice motor in the super cox
How did the Cox manage to get a dirtbike engine in it? I'd be keen for that video
FINALLY a 910 gets some love. They all get RB swapped down here though
"I want a teen second car!"
*gets handed the keys to a Datsun Bluebird*
"wtf?"
Thats impressive a high 9 out of that thing
Cool car :)
I’ll will be at the nats on the Saturday looking for ya’s haha
Ahhhh yes ❤👏 hey in NZ we got the sss version that was the "CA" variant 1800 or 2000cc and yes anything "NZ new" was a variant at that time, JDM were treated the same. TRASHED AND BASHED then thrown to the scrappy 🤷♂️ I never seen a V version from factory... dam you boys have some sick ass rides for the time........ anyone seen T&T3 from MCM barp barp barp barp barrrrrrrp
Very nice 👍💪🔥
Nice 👌
DATSUN!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
