Been a football fan since 1965 and remember this program on London area TV every Sunday afternoon. Peter Lorenzo was a good commentator and it's the first time I've heard the theme music since 1968 when Star Soccer became "The Big Match"...thank you for posting and bringing back the memories
This channel is gold dust for those of us of a certain vintage. It also shows how much football was televised in the 1950s & early 60s,albeit not as comprehensively as from the late 60s onwards.
Been trying (and failing) for years to get some footage of my dad on Star Soccer. Very fond memories of sitting in the back in Billy Wright's car (he was head of Sport at ATV) as he drive us both to grounds various. Thanks for this. Would be great to see more.
Excuse me, are you the real Matt Lorenzo who hosted ITV's 1994 World Cup coverage? Indeed is a great honour to read your comment. Very proud. Thanks to you!
@@YeOldeFootballChannel Yes. Followed on from my dad. Was never quite as good but he was a tough act to follow. I make documentaries now. Hurst The First And Only premiered on Sky yesterday. Keep up the good work - I worked at ITV Sport for years and even they couldn't track down a Star Soccer show.
What a performance by Jimmy Greenhoff! Three superb goals and a super assist. He was also tripped in the box which should have been a penalty. It's funny that as they played out the programme they chose the only goal of the five Jimmy played no part in. Nowadays they would focus on the guy who bagged the super hat trick. What a player Jimmy was.
In their own houses, more amazing how such a talented young team after finishing runners up in cup and league in 65 only won 2 titles and 1 FA cup in the next 10 years.
The Leeds directors only let Revie have a small 1st team squad & when injuries & suspensions kicked in towards the end of the season it seriously affected their results.Revie was forced to play players who were carrying knocks & were just plain knackered.
So many of those Star Soccer memories lost, destroyed or overtaped. Would love to see all the early 1968-69 games if they could be rediscovered as that was the first season I took an interest
Amazon Prime, no more tennis☹️. And now Premier League football which is dross. A once great aggressive game where tackling is now virtually banished. Thank god for this & other 20th C footb videos.
wow! super rare footage! would be interested to hear how you got hold of it!!! There could actually be about 100 of the ITC export copies of star soccer out there somewhere. Due to ITV franchises being lost, most of star soccer and its ABC WEEKEND TELEVISION competitor WORLD OF SOCCER has gone forever. Also thanks for the first colour big match. That also contains another rare gem. ITV footage of the 1967 cup final !! Hugh Johns commentating on that also. Amazing stuff! thank you!
We got Star Soccer here in Australia back in the day when we had only 3 TV channels and it was significant in my lifelong interest in and enjoyment of the English game. I remember Hugh Johns commentating and the guitar intro music but little else from then (but sometimes re-seeing a game can revive those seemingly lost memories). I think the channel that showed SS was channel 9. What happened to the tapes is anyone's guess but, although highly unlikely, copies could have found their way across to another later channel -SBS- which is very committed to soccer/football . SBS calls itself "the spiritual home of football" and is covering the World Cup.I'd think that any historical football video acquired by SBS would be seriously cared for. Thanks for the video. : )
@@normanby100 Maybe your question was only intended to be rhetorical... But anyhow, I didn't mind Hugh Johns as a commentator. He actually came out here to Australia briefly and called a couple of local games (or at least one I remember). Upon returning to England it seemed he made derogatory comments about the state of the Australian game which you'd have to say were true. But I thought he could've been more tactful. Unfortunately I expect the Australian game to continue to struggle despite the recent success of the Women's World Cup.
Oh I remember this game and many more like it. I was sixteen. Fulham had so many star names: Haynes, Clarke, Barrett, Cohen etc. But they had no real fight in them. Relegation followed relegation. Broke my heart.
Conceded 98 goals that season and finished bottom and 6 points short of safety. And bottom again - 1969 and 8 points adrift from safety. Aged 11, I saw my Villa boys play out a 1-1 draw at Fulham, March 1969...never been there since then. As a family we moved down from Leeds in 1965 to Surrey. My Dad went to see a few games in London. I remember him coming home from this one. Never seen the goals before. Another one he picked was 2 years later Chelsea 2 Leeds 5. He picked some good ones.
Like every football loving midlander watching Star Soccer in the 1970s was a ritual. This is also a reminder to football snobs that the term soccer is not an Americanism, but was in common usage in Britain throughout much of the 20th century.

Wow! Excellent posting. A thumbs-up for the guitar chord-wanging which accompanies this gem. I wonder how our multi-millionaire players would have coped on pitches like this one at Craven Cottage? A bit like making Tiger Woods play on Southsea's crazy golf course..

@@beds139 yes, back then ABC Television - who became reluctantly part of Thames - covered the Midlands at the weekend. Plus the Granada region which in those days also covered Yorkshire! I've no idea what they showed on a Sunday afternoon...
Fulham also got relegated the following year. Leeds won the League Cup a few months after this game.Their first ever major trophy. They won plenty more but also managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory many times.
Not only did Fulham get relegated that season, but it would be 33 years before they returned to the top flight, even playing basement division football during that dark period.
Great discovery. Surprising that Jimmy Greenhoff was allowed to leave, and replaced by Allan Clarke who played so poorly for Fulham in this particular match.
Revie was never allowed to develop a big enough squad by the stingy Leeds directors. Hence when Clarke came in Greenhoff had to be sold. It's why Leeds ran out of steam so often at the end of the season.
This may not have been Clarke's finest hour, but performances including an FA Cup Final Man of the Match award the following season at Leicester City [with whom he was also relegated] put him on Revie's radar and the rest is history.
This is more like the beautiful game, unlike the modern format which makes the var and the referee the centre of attention, need to be shut of the crazy system, Its costing me a fortune in losing bets.😅
Craven Cottage full on all four sides of the ground but in truth, a rather flat, lifeless atmosphere replicating the home side's pretty poor performance, very little created to excite the Fulham fans.
The theme tune sounded like something from the many of the ITV private eye type dramas in the 60s
And ATV produced some of those and distributed them through ITC
Future Leeds star Allan Clarke was playing for Fulham that day
