  • This is a video of a project involving the removal of grass below a bird feeder and the replacement with landscape fabric, gravel, and mulch. Grass below feeders, while not harmful for the birds, chipmunks and squirrels, can serve to make it harder for the birds and animals to find the seed and for the cam to film the birds on the ground cam. So, the grass needed to be removed and replaced with a better solution.
This video discusses this and shows how it was performed. I had planned to add Feeder tips, which is in the title of the video itself, but the video of the project turned out to be longer than I expected.
So, I decided to plan to make a Feeder Talk video with tips in the near future. If you are subscribed and have notifications turned on, you will be notified.

My tip is that I’ve used big pieces of cardboard instead of landscape fabric. This worked well for me so far.

Hi Ken, In my opinion you need some sort of escape cover so the birds at the feeder can get out of the way when raptors appear. A few will be caught which is normal but many will escape. Possibly a brush pile that can be removed for cleaning and spruced up when needed. Or even a couple of bushes in planters underneath the feeder.

Thanks Brad for the tip. With the wide angle lens the red cedar trees look like they were a good distance away. However, if you view the garden cam, you might note the abundance of cover within about 10-12 feet along with some new holly bushes and compact cherry laurels and azaleas that have been planed recently. I have added two larger hollies, 4 smaller hollies, 6 compact cherry laurels and 16 azalea bushes. I have also plated two pear trees, one white dogwood, one pin oak, one scarlet maple, two magnolias among others and now have an irrigation system installed. Much has changes since this was filmed over a year ago. Check out the garden cam: ua-cam.com/video/aJUTlMYwqZI/v-deo.html

I was wondering if you use Preen weed preventer mulch ? MY wife spreads it in her flower beds and it really helps with weed control .

Thanks for your comment! I have never hear of such. It sounds like a great idea to hold weeds down and could be applied on the top or as a base layer. I just want to make sure that it has no chemicals that would be bad for the birds, but I have to say, this would be a great idea if it is OK and I appreciate your question and idea! Thanks again!

Ken Little I hadn’t heard of it til my told to go to Lowe’s and get several bags. Don’t blame you for wanting to check if it’s animal friendly.

how do you clean under the feeder? it gets full of seeds and bird droppings over time

Thanks for the question Tyler! I scrape off about 3 or 4 inches of the mulch, dispose of it and replace it with a fresh new 3 or 4 inches, which in my case is 18 cubic feet or (6) 3-cubic foot bags. This insures any bad material is removed and there is a good 3 to 4 inches of new uncontaminated material in its place. I hope that answers your question!

@@KenLittle thanks for answering! thats quite a bit of mulch, do you recommend to do it once a year or once a month? also, do you recommend composting the old mulch?

I usually keep an eye on the condition of the ground underneath. If we have had a lot of rain, the condition can deteriorate more rapidly and just get nasty. I'm not into composting and don't know if the material removed contains anything bad, like salmonella in the bird deposits or any other diseases, so I prefer to dispose of it. The composting process with all the bacteria may remove the impurities, I just don't want to answer on something with which I am not familiar. If used for growing flowers or non-edibles, it may be OK, but not for anything edible, I would speculate.

Landscape fabric is a curse. It get put into the landscape and forgotten about, renders soil useless. It like gill nets for plants.

Maybe so. I have my cam pole pretty much planted there so I’m not planning a garden there. One thing that I have noticed, that since I keep removing old much and planting new mulch , I have had grass growing over the fabric. Apparently some plants can grow on top of it probably like the grow between cracks in sidewalks, LOL!
