  • Why did Christ say “My God, why have You forsaken Me?” What is hell? (revisited)
In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, One God. Amen.
Today, I am attempting, God willing, to answer 2 vital questions at the same time. These questions are “Why did Christ say on the cross ‘My God, My God, why have you forsaken Me?’” and the second question is “what is the principal characteristic of hell.” In the process, we will have to define the true meaning of the terms life and death. We will answer these questions through the teachings of St. Athanasius, St. Gregory the Theologian and St. Cyril of Alexandria-these are considered three of the most important theologians by the entire Christendom.

"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? " Psalm 22 - this was the fulfilment of the prophecy that Jesus used his last words on the cross. God is great!

Also, he is quoting the first line of the messianic Psalm 22. Some of those around them, most likely including those who loved him, would have recognized this. Psalm 22:16 Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce e my hands and my feet. Pslam 22:24 For he has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help.
I love how towards the end, it says that God did not forsake him but has listened to his cry for help and answered him. This would have been a source of comfort to those who loved him and possibly a witness to those around.

Hell is a pagan English word. Originally from northern Germanic Viking term.

translation/transliteration would mean hell/hel (northern Germanic Viking term) would be the closest meaning to gehenna (Latin) which would have been translated/transliterated from the word Tartarus or Hades in Greek which would come from sheowl in Hebrew.

Isn't the "hell" mentioned in Pslams 139:8 Sheol/Hades, whereas the "hell" mentioned in Revelation 14:9-10 Gehenna? Are these not different places?

There is just underworld (sheol or Hades ) vs the bossom of Abraham for until the second coming of Christ(heard it in fr John hopko's podcast). Hell is a wrong translation for sheol Sheol is just world of darkness.
After that it is Gehenna. I didn't find gehenna in revelation 14:9-1p
