Great to see this I have helped start this engine but have never seen it run as fast as the first of this video. It is truly a work of art considering when it was built.
This engine is in at Florida Flywheelers close to Fort Meade. There is also a 485 H.P. Cooper at Kinzers in Pennsylvania. Have to get on Smokstakdotcom and you might find others..
If you look at the configuration of the engine it has 2 piston and 2 cylinders. It uses a crosshead to move the pistons in the cylinders. There are 4 intake valves, 4 exhaust. There are 4 combusion chambers, one on each end of the cylinders. So the total is under estimated for a total of over 45,000 cu. in. !!!! Thanks for pointing that out....
@Taterslawify now, to put that much torque in perspective, lets say we did put a simple one foot long lever on the crankshaft. that lever would be able to exert MORE than 8 3/4 TONS of pressure, at 90 deg. angle from the lever. so, its no joke when you say this engine has tons of torque.
@501video501 There are 2 pistons that are encapsulated on both ends. So you have 4 combustion chambers, 4 intakes and 4 exhaust valves. Good question, Thanks, Fred
A beautiful piece of machinery. Ohh man imagine that torque. 14,000 ft lbs? I imagine there is one at each pole of the earth. Talk about a prime mover :)
Lovely engine! If you like big engines, take a look at 'Kempton Park' engines. 1000 shaft horsepower, 600 tons. The videos cannot give you anywhere near the true magnificence and quiet strength of these beautiful machines. If in UK, make the effort to go and have a look; You will stand and soak up an atmosphere and memory that will take a long time to forget.
Think that is an impressive number, this engine made 400 HP, one of Titanic's triple expansion 4 cylinder steam engine made 15,000 hp at 75 rpm. That is 1,050,400 ft/lbs!!! One R4360 28 cylinder 4,360 CID radial made 3,250 HP @ 2,800 rpm or 6,096 ft/lbs and achieved 1.11 hp/lb
are you sure about the 4 carbs ??? We had a Snow engine like this at Van Compressor Station here in Pa. on one side of the piston it burned natural gas, on the other side it pumped it. So I burned as much as it pumped. The one here had 4 double head cylinders inline and a 24 ton flywheel.
Hello odatmatt, Yes this engine has 2 cylinders with 2 pistons and there are combustion chambers on both ends of each piston. You can see the rocker rollers and arms for the intake and exhaust for each end of the each cylinder. Look at about the 1:45 mark and you will see the big mixer with fuel adjustments on each end. The pump for natural gas is on the other end of the engine. Seems like I didn't get a shot of it in the movie. Sorry.. I have other movies of this engine and I know there are several others on UA-cam that does show the large pump that is about 4 foot in diameter. Thanks for the comment... Fred
I have added a link in the description that at the end you can barely see the compressor. I usually don't take a movie of it because you can't see anything move.
Really? Now I understand why this winter is so f*cking long, but I think this engine is getting old and slowing down. That's why earth is spinning slower. ;)
Great to see this I have helped start this engine but have never seen it run as fast as the first of this video. It is truly a work of art considering when it was built.
For this decade, a wonderful piece of engineering.
Pretty amazing ‘inside-out’ engine!
Love the sound!!
Jesus christ, what a complicated machine. It's beautiful!

What an awesome bit of kit !

This one is at Fort Meade Florida and there is a 600 H.P. at Coolspring Pennsylvania..
music to my ears!!!! litterally!!!! it makes a cool beat if you think about it
Holy crap that is freaking awesome...
And it's got a roller cam!
I think you are one of the few that understands.
i never seen nothing like this before and to hear this thing is awesome!!!
@501video501 There are 2 pistons that are encapsulated on both ends. So you have 4 combustion chambers, 4 intakes and 4 exhaust valves. Good question, Thanks, Fred
it has a nice rhythm to it,
A beautiful piece of machinery. Ohh man imagine that torque. 14,000 ft lbs? I imagine there is one at each pole of the earth. Talk about a prime mover :)
You`ll never find a 400 HP racing engine with that impressive torque
Lovely engine!

Beautiful machine. I wonder how much fuel it consumes.
Its like a gearhead Disneyland. Think of all the work that thing has done.

EXACTLY!!!! Torque is what makes the world go round!
That's got a tight beat, call some friends and start the cypher!
@gritzschke It is at Florida Flywheelers, Fort Meade Florida
I got one of these in my Civic. Its got VTEC too.
Hi pileofiron,
Aint that just the must beautiful sound you ever heard? LOL!!!
Thanks for uploading it!
Take care,
mrbluenun
If you couldn't shut it off by conventional means, the only thing you can do is wait for the fuel to run out lol, that thing is unstoppable.
It makes just enough torque to keep itself turning...
look at the size of that crosshead!
@pileofiron I think they have one at Rolag Mn. Threshing Bee,
are you sure about the 4 carbs ??? We had a Snow engine like this at Van Compressor Station here in Pa. on one side of the piston it burned natural gas, on the other side it pumped it. So I burned as much as it pumped. The one here had 4 double head cylinders inline and a 24 ton flywheel.

It needs modern Comp Cams roller rockers !
is that thing still in service? crazy machine you got there, awesome.
Was going to ask... It's a strange sight to behold...
Nice music!
Like old school rap!
:-)
works of art!!!
what is the history of the engine? generator plant?
Can anyone tell me where is this engine located as I would love to see and hear it running up close.
Not certain on the Torque!
Probably safe to assume it's torque is
around 5000 ft pounds
Ken Alexander 400 x 5252= 2,100,800 divide by 150 = 14,005.333 ft lbs torque
haha those old guys were probably alive to put it together too
those old timers build this country.
if i wanted to see this thing in person, where would i go?
It's amazing what men can do.
pretty damn cool, if you ask me. some of you guys must be retired train engineers.
I got to see the 600 snow run at cool springs, You think the 400 is big...
At 1:23 What are the little lobes on the camshaft for.??
@Taterslawify first thing i thought was who cares about the hp i wanna know the torque. thats insane
What Threshing bee is this engine on display ?
Daddy is this what makes the Earth spin?
Yep, just a little over 17,500 lbs!!!
Close to 14,000 ft. lbs. at 150 rpms...
400hp at 120 rpm would be about 17,500 foot pounds of torque.
It ran 10's, my friend blew the manifold so I told him he owes me another one
How many spark plugs does it have?
Ever wonder how the earth got started turning? There's one of these at the north pole.
They actuate trigger for ignition...
@pileofiron WHATS THE GAS MILAGE LOL
Who wouldn't like this video?
I've always said, horsepower isn't shit without torque.
Ah yes, but can it make fries?
and 17,506 ft lbs torque at only 120 rpm's...
This would make an absolutely terrible airplane motor ...
400HP isn't enough to lift iit's weight with less than a 40.000 sqrt feet wingarea =P
Sounds like " I think I can, I think I can. aaahaha
This is not a Microsoft product! But need for ECU tuning!
yea I know, there is supposed to be a 1100 H.P. beimng put together in NW Ohio...
I didn't show it in the video but it was a natural gas pumping engine. There is a huge compressor on the back end!!
all those earthquakes we have been seeing, here is the cause
Jay Leno should buy this thing and turbocharge it-
it sounds like music for me! fuck lady gaga, I'm gonna download this kind of music and listen on my i-pod. and move like a robot!
:-)
i wanna know the cam specs lol
@hellraised187 Sorry I posted on the wrong engine???
Come on, bro, intake, header and exhaust, and this will do a 6.8 in the quarter mile. Minutes, that is.
yo need a train engine to start it xD
that would be a big back fire ;p
what does it do in the quarter mile ? ha !!!
Now rev it to 7000 and se if it takes it, if not its bad design.
40,000 ci = 655.5 Litres, nice lump for the car.
Reminds me of something from Willy Wonka
Wow
Don't care about the horsepower....what's the TORQUE?!
Plus a racing engine will never last 50 + years at full load running 24-7
@Taterslawify thats cuz back then they had real power, not this suped up stuff of today
656 liter engine...
Really? Now I understand why this winter is so f*cking long, but I think this engine is getting old and slowing down. That's why earth is spinning slower. ;)
Nitrous
sure man !!! hahaha
"only 400" who gives a fuck! this thing has an absolute shit load of torque at only 150rpm. could probably move a mountain....
