This is a game changer. When I considered the possibility of using Python in Excel, I was thinking it might be in place of Visual Basic and hadn't considered the possibilities of using libraries as you've demonstrated.
I'm still interested in the possibilities of using for loops to iterate through lines for some unusual requirements I might have, so I'll explore more.

Excel already does dataframes/tables and charts, but, traditionally, we've have to skedaddle to VBA to process text mining stuff.
However, I'm looking forward to the general release to take it for a test drive.

This will be a great way of squeezing some more revenue out of Excel jocks too dumb to realize that you can completely bypass the whole Microsoft bit and make direct use of Python and NumPy and Jupyter and Pandas and Matplotlib and all the rest of it ... for free.

Be aware that besides ChatGPT and Bing, there are other Chat AIs out there as well. From my experiments with code (and in general) no one AI gives the best answer for every prompt. So it’s often worth comparing at least a couple at a time.

Python integration opens up a whole new world of possibilities! One grumble I have, though, is I can’t help but think we need the Advanced Formula Environment to replace the formula bar we’re so used to. It doesn’t seem right typing Python code in the current one!
I agree, the AFE would be ideal for Python. It may well work. I haven’t tried it yet.

This is fantastic news. I stopped learning VBA a while back and switched to Python. I have seen in some job postings some companies are looking to update legacy Excel and this may be an option in the future.

You're the first I've heard explain "enter =PY and tab". This is essential. If you just put =py and return, like you'd normally do, it won't work.

In Excel (Microsoft 365), File => Account (on left near bottom) => "About Excel" should have that version number (or higher) and say "Beta Channel".

So far I can't see anything that really excites me but that might change when seeing more advanced examples. The charts alone wouldn't be incentive enough. I'm a graphics designer and often create charts but have found that simple ones everyone understands without a lengthy explanation work best. I certainly wouldn't pay extra for them.

Python is vast and the libraries make it relatively easy to get started with. If you’re already using it then it’s a no brainer. If it’s new to you then there might not be any immediate need.
It depends on how far you can see. Python and the libraries if offers is an absolute game changer here @ennykraft. Look at it this way, Microsoft will not spend the time and development effort to integrate a 3rd Party language into Excel if there wasn't going to be great advantages. The charts is just the tip of the iceberg.

There is no catching up to do. M$ simply offloaded the cost of developing the scripting language to the open-source community. The competition has been better since the 80s. Excel and Word were not better than Quattro and WordPerfect. Maybe this misstep by M$ will push their Office products to the obscurity they have deserved.

Legacy VBA can it be replaced with the Cloud based Python Packages? Could it interface with PowerQuery, too?
No, Python in Excel cannot interact with other Excel tools other than formulas.

There's no installation process. It's currently available to 365 users on the Office Insiders beta channel. You can sign up for it here for free: insider.microsoft365.com/en-us/join/windows

I have been trying to access the Python in the "formulas" tab after getting the "Beta Channel" in MS 365 insider. But, I'm not able to see any options/tabs related to Python. Any idea why this is?, thanks.
The way the beta program works for big changes like this is to release the feature to random subsets of users. They often start with 50% of users, but I think this was less than that. Each week there is an update, so keep your eye out for it to see if you're in the lucky group. Note: it's possible to be in the first lucky group and then the next week lose the feature! If you have multiple PCs, it's possible for one to have it and one not to have it. Good luck!

I think at least knowing the basics of Python will enable you to leverage the code you can get from ChatGPT more easily.
Seems like the new GROUPBY and PIVOTBY functions, when combined with other functions like VSTACK, HSTACK, etc., dilute the value of having, yet another, programming language (Python) in Excel. Yup, Python via libraries offers access to fancy charts, but most audiences don't want fancy charts. They're not as easy, or quick to understand.
Agree, the Python charts aren't for everyone, but they have their place.
Hi Mynda - Looking forward to this - looks fscinating - have been using Python for years and recently completed an online course. However it does not seem to have been activated in my version yet. A couple of posts online also say it is on a rollout method. Do anyone know anything about this I am on the 365 Beta and the vesion is Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2309 Build 16.0.16818.20000) 64-bit. I am not getting Insert Python on the formual bar

My Python skills are still limited, but I wonder if the problem you're experiencing is due to the order of evaluation i.e. Python can only reference cells above or to the left of the active cell, likewise for sheets. e.g. Sheet1 cannot reference Python on Sheet2, assuming sheets are in numeric order in the file. Hope that helps.

VBA compared to Python is wortheless :( That is why I switched long time ago to Python.

With this new feature, what will be the impact on VBA? Can we use Python in Excel to create Userforms with ActiveX controls?
No, Python in Excel is not designed to replace automation tools. It's more there for the data analytics, charting and machine learning tools.
Why would I use this over Jupyter Notebook or even a standard IDE? I guess in Excel you have the added mobility of being able to view all columns easier.. but what are the other benefits?
Because you can use data in Excel, use Power Query to get data from multiple sources, you can combine Python results with Excel formulas, VBA, Office Scripts and all the other good stuff in Excel.
great possibilities. Like the 'picture in cell' alternative to merging cells to show the seaborn picture. Only I do not see that option in my right click menu.
Yes, exciting! If you have Python, then you should have Picture in Cell. If you don't have Python yet, then it'll be a version limitation.
I do have python. Perhaps Picture in Cell is the same as Paste Special as Picture (with link), but then you still have to size the cell or merge cells to get a proper picture.@@MyOnlineTrainingHub

I am a Microsoft 365 Insider signed up for the Beta Channel but the PY formula doesn't seem to exist. There is no "Python" section in the formulas tab. What is wrong?
Hi Gary, You haven't done anything wrong. Python is being released to users on the Beta Channel over time to ensure things are working smoothly. Microsoft 365 Insiders with the Beta version of Excel that don’t have Python, should check daily/weekly for updates.
Thanks for the prompt reply. I'm pretty sure Microsoft's decision to roll Python out to a limited number of users just makes things even more confusing to the Excel community.

I’m having a strange issue. I joined the insider beta, downloaded it, and tried to use it. The buttons don’t work for some reason, and doing =PY shows nothing. Any recommendations?

the flexibility of programming languages is being able to make use of all kinds of data structures, and to transform between them. having just a line or two of python stuck in an array environment of excel, provides little of the benefits of python.
You can use the Python data shaping tools inside Excel, or you can also use Power Query to get and shape the data and then connect Python to the query.
