Well I can say I learned something new today: human saliva contains pathogens that are deadly to birds. When Maya said (after a biting a piece of fruit off for her goat) “don’t do that with birds” 6:02 I was like, why not? Which led to a google search and now here I am with fresh knowledge. Thanks Maya.
For anyone who doesnt want to google it: When a bird comes into contact with mammal saliva, it can cause them to become ill or worse. This is because mammal saliva contains a bacteria called Streptococcus mutans. This bacteria is harmless to humans, but our birds cannot battle it. Additionally, if we have cuts or sores in our mouths, these can also transmit diseases to birds
This probably also applies to some reptiles (particularly snakes) anything with strong stomach acids like most mammals will not be bothered by ingesting most kinds of bacteria through the digestive system. You need particularly strong pathogens that are capable of surviving in pH of one or so, most bacteria and all viruses that I'm aware of are incapable of such feats. Where as far as I know, bird stomach acid has a pH of like four or five which most pathogens that I am aware of can survive in for extended periods of time
The fact that Maya continues to make herself incredibly uncomfortable/embarrassed going to the store on camera with us instead of getting them before is true dedication to the content. Please keep making these videos! They are so entertaining!
Thought it was pretty weird when the dude was calling people NPCs at the store. Like they're somehow not regular people? huh? Camerman seems like a loser.
Instead of using a tractor with a bush hog, a Bobcat skidsteer with brush cutter and all the other fuel guzzling/polluting machines to try and keep our 4 acres of land clear, we tried Goatscaping. It is amazing. The company sets up all the temp fencing along with our permanent fence to contain them. They then set up several watering tubs and brought in 28 goats. It was the coolest thing I have ever seen. They are eating machines. They eat when they want, they sleep when they want, they do what they want, but mostly eat. And it doesn't matter what it is. It took 28 goats just under 2 months to clear 4 acres of land. And when I say clear, I mean CLEAR. There's no vegetation from waist high to the ground. But don't let them go where you don't want to be zero vegetation left. One of them knocked over a barricade and got into my mother's flower bed. Flowers are like candy for goats. But we calculated the time/fuel/wear & tear on us and our equipment and it is financially worth it. Just the fuel cost alone was a wash. And the only thing they produce is fertilizer. They told us that the specific breed and type of goats varies by region, but they all do the same thing. Eat. And the little one's are so damned cute. My daughter fell in love and BEGGED me to buy her one. Not going that far yet. But watching this video is making me thing about it.
A long time ago I read an article on this, that mentioned sheep will crop grass while goats will pull it out by the roots. Not sure about how correct or generally applicable that is, but I liked hearing about your personal experience with this.
Carrot, cantaloupe, and kiwi are my guesses for Peewee McNugget's favorites. Not sure if there's logic behind those choices, they just sound like good goat food.
The whole fear of filming in public thing is so real. I feel that way just taking pictures. Bug ups to you for pushing through. And big ups to the camera man for being supportive. 🎉
Maya has some of the best content out there. She's actually just saving random animals meant for food consumption and making them the happiest they can be while also using them to make videos that not only entertain but help inform people about all kind of animal welfare issues. Much respect to this women and her cause.
i dont usually comment on stuff but i have been starting to look forward to all of mayas vids. The vibe is so sick and I love animals. Top 5 content on youtube :)
When i was little we used to stay at a holiday cottage and the owners had 2 goats called Gracie and Charity. Their absolute favourite snack was banana skins, and my brother and I would get so excited to go and feed them our banana skin every evening :) this brought back very fond memories thank you Maya 😊
I love when the baby goats start going crazy for the fruit. It reminded me of when you give kids sweets for the first time and they start freaking out wanting more 😂
So many critters love blueberries, and I know goats love blackberry brambles/leaves but don’t care too much for the berries. I think they’ll dig the crunchy stuff the most, the veggies more than fruits. The “great” (and often dangerous) thing about goats though is that they try to eat anything and everything, so they probably won’t be too picky 😂 Edit: okay well, SOME goats are too picky to want to eat anything yes. Or they get bored 😂😂😂
I was really shocked they didn't eat some things, the goats I know are eating thorny bushes and like you say BRAMBLES I did not expect them to be picky hahaha
Peewee was apparently starving before Maya showed up with that tray of food - and once he got full, Tripper really picked up the slack! 😂Question: at 5:30 , did you recognize the responding goat by the sound of their bleat, or was their a goat visible off-screen?
In the next shot you can see what looks like Beetle looking through the fence. But that would be a great video idea. Can Maya identify her goats by the sound of their bleats?
As someone who has had both sheep and goats, you can definitely learn to identify their bleating, assuming you have a small enough herd. They all have their unique voice :)
I have pretty severe misophonia. Nothing irritates me like people who chew loudly *cough, nmplol, cough*, or even the sound of someone miked up swallowing liquid. *shudder* But, I've discovered (thanks to Maya's asmr/tiny mic videos) that hearing animals munch away has the exact opposite effect. It continues to blow my mind, and I am so here for any and all future animal asmr chomp chomp content. These videos are pure gold.
Short videos probably work better for youtube but I could watch this for hours. I think this was one of the more successful videos in recent times. Better than geese who don't want to get into the pool.
Peewee reminds me so much of my beagle. If it's in my hands, she'll eat it. If it's on my plate, she'll eat it. If it's in the general vicinity of her face, she'll eat it. Basically she'll shove anything in her mouth, chew and swallow, then decide if it's food.
I just want to inform you that this title definitely pulled me in and boosted your algo score. Nice title. Hope peewee mcnugget enjoys his dumb baby goat life. I love him :)
tbh in love with the way your goats arent dehorned edit: i dont mean that dehorning is bad! its needed for show goats, but it also makes me cry inside putting theough poor goats babs through that pain

The goats would love some recreational toys to jump around and play on. You can make a seasaw with a board and an old wooden wire spool. A little trampoline would be great for them. I've also seen big 26" tough medicine balls being used for them to jump on. Would be great enrichment tools for them.

for the lazy ones, our mouths have bacteria that, although harmless to us, it's harmful to birds. especially Parrots.

They're adorable. I love their faces!
I would love to see a round two of all these videos - buffet style so we see what food they like the most, in order!
The sim marker over the dude at 2:25 had me dying 😭
I wonder if a whole cantaloupe would be fun enrichment for them, or maybe it would be just a confusing ball that eventually gets mushy.

Lots of animals can’t taste spice in the same way so they gladly eat peppers and stuff without feeling it in the same way we do
But that's mostly if not just birds, since the spicy foods evolved to be a food for birds and keep away mammals, that way their seeds were spread
