I wanted to make robes and ribbons for my giant robots, and looked allover the youtubes for some tutorials that could work. Found some. Then I saw this suggested, slapped my forehead because I forgot I was already subbed here, and found this video. This is perfect and ideal for what I am going to do. Thanks Mel. You remain a staple in my hobby mind.
You are a wonderful, patient teacher. I have never modeled but just find your vids so educational and relaxing to watch. I am inspired by them to have a go. Thank you so much and continued success.
+Sazs Laz give it a go then mate ;-D
I have used dryer sheets to the same effect and no teddy bears, also they are extremely durable. Thanks for the Videos and keep up the great work I have learned much from you...
Honestly after seeing this.... I want to see the tent get made!
Actually, this material is going to be great adding canvas rolls to equipment and rucksacks.
Absolutely BRILLIANT!!! I've been wanting to do barrels, crates, ammo cans, etc... draped in canvas but didn't want to use paper towels & was waiting for a vialbe alternative. Thank you for the great tip.
No worries mate, just watch out for the ones with little teddys on them
Excellent tutorial. I always liked using paper type materials to make bedrolls and tarps rather than sculpting resins. This is my tool kit from now on. Loved the bit about teddy bears.
LOL, those damn teddy bears!
Great tip using the baby wipes. I happen to have all types of scrap cloth around the house so I use that instead of the wipe (natural cotton cloth) because it is thinner and easier to get the folds in for doorways and such. I can also pleat it.
I have some course weave cotton around here somewhere from one of my ex-wife's projects that I have used for tents and tarps but I will definitely give the baby wipes a try.
Wow! Thanks for this tutorial! I didn't even know you could use baby wipes like that. I gotta try this out once I'm finished with my board and start making terrain. Thanks again!
Terrific work @TheTerrainTutor. Looks fantastic in your scale. I model in N Scale RailRoad.
Baby wipes didn't give me the detail I needed for N, no for paper towel too. So taking a chance I tried Kleenex. Wow I got details, wrinkles and folds like crazy. It's quite a challenge and you
need a ton of patience. N Scalers give it a try. I folded a Kleenex in half doubling the thickness. Soaked it in 50/50 white glue and draped it over my form. Let it dry completely and ... success!!!
I'll give kleenex a go mate, thanks!
Awesome idea keep it up =D Love the thought of an orc warlord with teddies all over his tent trying to look menacing XD
Brilliant idea! I use roll-your-own cigarette paper for flags and capes and whatnot. Your T-shirt suggests you may already have some at hand.
Watch a couple of your videos. Until a week or so ago, never though of using foam board to make a building. Looking at building several zombie dioramas in 1/35th scale and buying modeling buildings can not only be expensive, but you're also limited to what's available. And looking forward to using baby wipes instead of paper towels/toilet paper.Thank you for the videos.
Wow, excellent, greetings from the UK!
I've used rice paper (the Chinese use it to write on it) with a similar treatment to make banners (like in medieval battle banners).
You paint the piece of paper, then add the PVA with a brush and then you stretch it and bend it.
+winterfell0forever Oh, I'll add that to the to try list, thanks for the heads up buddy
Hey Mel that tent you made looked amazing you should do a let's make on how to make them with the baby wipe technique shown in this vid
We'll cover it at some point mate
No worries mate, glad you found it useful.
No worries mate, glad you found it useful
Great technique, Mel. I'm using it on a bigger scale to make a medical tent for GI Joe figures. Because I'm a nerd.
+Stay Dread Action man was way cooler .... ;-D
Good idea using the baby wipes. I never thought of that. It looks easier then tissue.
John Kelley It not tearing is a massive bonus mate :-)
Great job!!! Will be trying this on my next dio
this is an awsome idea Im so glad I came across your video it helped me lot thankyou!!
+Jose Torres Glad it helped mate
Please do a video on you're imperial guard and how you did that stowage on you're chimera, love this got so many ideas now mate, keep em coming :)
To be honest mate, the tarps are just babywipes soaked in watered down pva and then draped over the various stowage. Hope that helps mate
im on about the the actual stowage, and the raplings to hold them place, be a great help buddy, many thanks
For your base coat, if your canvases are going to be the same color, just add it to your watered down PVA. It will add a little bit of strength, and you don't have to worry about wetting it with your base coat.
Harry Chamberlain nice tip mate
This is fantastic! There's always a pack of these knocking about at home (kids don't get any less messy in my experience even at 7 - always seem keen on finding the stickiest/messiest substances known to man!)
Could they also be used for things like cloaks, flags and standards etc?
Why am I watching this at 3 am you ask? I fell down the UA-cam rabbithole is why. But I thoroughly enjoyed it.
We've all been there mate
Brilliant surfing your channel and there's such good ideas here. Thanks . Orc teddy bear curtains :) why not
Jon Simpson All the top orcs like their teddy bear curtains matey ;-)
Nice tip Mel, thanks
No worries mate
Yeah, we've got huggies here mate
At 4:03 in the video, it looks pretty good as it is - as though there's a slight breeze causing it to billow a bit. Could have saved the hassle of fiddling to get the creases right! Looked good though, thanks for the tip.
Xarboth Wind power, it's the future! Cheers mate ;-)
cheers for this great tip mate
Try Dryer Sheets Also. Stronger than the wipes and they take paint well after they are used in the dryer.
J White I'll give it a go mate, thanks
What do you mean mate, vehicle/model customisation?
All shall fear the great teddy bear clan! Ha ha. That's awesome.
I think this could be a nice way to make banners as well, good tip; thanks!
alec stirner Gald you found it helpful mate
very helpful thanks
I love the medic tent, been looking to make something like that for my apocalyptic board (zombie apocalypse ;-) ) how'd you make the skeleton of the tent? foamboard? nice tip with the wipes mate.
+Alrethian corbaniaprime.blogspot.co.uk/2011/11/scenery-tutorial-making-tents.html ;-)
Would you have to prime the baby wipe before painting
It should be ok mate but I've never pre-coloured it, so let me know how you get on.
super idea! i have been getting really annoyed with tissue and paper towels - i'll move to baby wipes now.
great tip- I used pure huggies those in asda cost 3 pounds for pack of 4 but have teddybears all over the place. great texture and kind of strong for wipes - but you can't do big surface with it, my daughter is using this and are great for her allergy so I am sort of bond with them but not recommend if you need it flat, you can hide teddy's in folds as I do
Cheers mate, I've suffered with the teddies on huggies before, I found that a bit of filler/a tear etc are also good ways to hide the little buggers!
yep that what I did wit mine wet it rubber it with finger and its most of it gone if you didn't knew it was there its very hard to notice.
:o)
Just remember that less is more and leave it plenty of time to dry mate.
If I was to build an ork hut, I would absolutely love to have very discrete teddies in the corner of the draped doors or windows. Just so you know it's there but isn't immediately visible.
Hi mate ,do you think that the wipes such as "chux" could be glued to the foamboard to add texture ?Thank you for the most excellent tutorials you are an absolute champ!
I don't know what chux are mate
Very Nice. :) Do you have a method for making the netting that is seen over artillery pieces in the WWII Western Desert?
Number 100 subscriptor¡ Greetings from spain
Quick question. Before you dry them do you rinse them to get them clean? Awesome idea that I look forward to trying.
You can but it's not essential mate
Awesome vid good sir! Im building a Chemical/ oil refinery terrain board and was wondering if you could do a tutorial on crates and barrels?, lol iv got a bunch of pallets made up but i dont have anything to put on them and after watching this tutorial i thought it would be epic to make tarps to lay over the barrels so that it gives the effect of supplies being stored outside the facilitys (kind of a shipping yard if you will), iv tried making both barrels and crates before but they never really turn out right lol, Thanks again for the tutorial good sir, Cheers!
teatrooper To be honest mate, I just buy mine :-/
Right oh, ill have to poke around and see what i can find, where do you get yours from?
Odd question, but what's the best method for drying the wipes out?
can you make a hospital tent?
Would this work for a boat, barge or ships sails?
Should work fine mate
Holy crap I want a tutorial on the tent!!!
corbaniaprime.blogspot.co.uk/2011/11/scenery-tutorial-making-tents.html:oD
just a thought but the wipe has alcohol in it which would let the pva soak into it better when wet? no need to dry?
+Thomas “sweeny” Atkins Quite possibly, I just always have mate
depending on the "type" of pampers wipe you buy (sensitive, aloe, what have you) some have little ducks... somehow the orc war tents weren't so scary anymore.
Actually, my fubar was to use ones with little teddy bears imprinted on them mate!
TheTerrainTutor
AH, the cute and cuddly Death Orc Tribe. :)
do you have any tutorials for making other things out of wipes?
I mainly use it for canvases mate
Hello Mel. Do you allow the baby wipes to dry before you add PVA, or do you use them straight from the package?
Chris Wall I used to, now I give them a quick wash in cold wash, squeeze out as much as possible and then stick down and glue mate
I like your medical tent do you have a videos on it?
Bill
William Neese No but there's a link to a blog tutorial somewhere in the comments to this vid mate ;-)
Nice technique mate. Are these baby wipes also suitable for flags and banners?
Certainly mate but I'd dry them and paint them before hanging them
Cheers mate, unfortunately my friend wasn't so impressed, he reckoned that i'd done it on purpose, as if ;o)
Have you tried mixing some paint into the PVA mix?
yeah but it's messy when it comes to application, especially if you're applying over something that's already painted
Have you ever used a dryer sheet for anything I was looking at one last week and noticed that the fabric is layered. Different colors . Any who just wondering
Don't have them mate
Would this work for flags and banners? I've used paper soaked in PVA for it but it's not very convincing
cheesecloth for those mate
Won't the PVA glue cover any patterns like Tebby Bears on the BabyWipe?
no mate
Mel, is there anything you cannot build? ; ) Great job!
I don't like palm trees! ;-D
Would this technique work for cloaks or tabbards? Has anyone tried?
Should do mate
Meh!.....I'm over it bro....keep the tips coming!
What brand/type are they as I got some Pampers ones but the weave is too open to use them.
Mark Senior I like Huggies mate ;-D
Are these to thick for say 1/35th scale armor?
50/50 mate, give it a go and see
But if you are going for the Teddy Bear look what brand is that? LOL
what is PVA
Have you ever tried making cloaks with these?
No, I use green stuff for cloaks
By the lack of a baby, (pedal) bin liner, tissue & PVA 😸
What annoys me is the amount of bed rolls, packed up tents etc that I have thrown out over the years. :-( I will give this one a try, but I will try to seal it with spray clear to see how that works.
James Evans Let me know how you get on mate :-)
Very nice tutorial Check out TheDMsCraft Scotty did an Orc tent with paper towels could use these baby wipes also. But after covering with the glue/water combo and painting it it's pretty sturdy stuff unless you play in a hurricane but who's crazy enough to do that?
I used to use paper towels but got sick of them ripping as I was manipulating them, hence the wipes, much more durable mate
what is PBA?
pva
Adhere
Eat At Joes
I'm going to have ago at making some tents from this then. One word of caution though.... don't use USED wipes.
Wise advice mate!
Too many guys and not enuf girls! Run two lines of simple stitches along the top so they are out of sight. Use them to gather the material and then tie them off close. The gathers will stay and look more like drapes of fabric.
Sorry hun!
You can stick babywipes, I did it for my stretchers but you'll probably find it easier to pleat it and push a pin through it. Same effect but a lot easier hun.
Warning, use fresh babywipes, never use one that has been used on an infant.....
+mailperson lmao, good advice
Unless you're trying to get that crazy custom color strained peas green or smashed banana yellow. :)
Real men have teddy bears.
;-)
or modeltanks : )
Teddy (Mister Bean) & a hedgehog 😸
Nice tip but had to stop listening. ...you must have said "yea" and "ok" 1000 times... it's usually a means of seeking buy in or lack of confidence no need for either...not a criticism just really difficult to listen to bro.
Sorry mate, I've done it all my life and I can't change it, I've tried. Hey, you've just gotta be yourself mate, soz it spoiled it for you.
