How to Repair Holes in Pant Pocket - DIY Add New half Pocket

- Fix holes in a pocket by adding a new half pocket.
In this video I show you how to easily repair the hole in your pocket by removing the damaged part and adding new fabric.
Most pockets are damaged by storing keys and change.
Once the fabric is thinned out and ripped, it is better to replace the fabric rather than trying to patch it.
Not only is it stronger, but also looks a lot more professional.
You do not need to have a serger to do this repair as all the seams are finished with a french seam.

i went from not even knowing what a French seam is to repairing two complicated pockets thanks to this video. Ty so much for spending the time and energy on this tutorial!!!
Thanks so much for the recognition and so happy you were able to do this!😊. Thanks for watching and please check out some of my other videos. Cheers!
Great ! ! !
I was wreaking my brain how to do just this. What a find!!!
Glad I could help!
For a long time I've wished I could figure out how to extend the pathetic excuse for pockets in my women's jeans and I'm sure I can use this technique! Thank you!
Haha you totally can!! Thanks for watching😊
That is the best idea ever :o I might do that for all my women pockets !
I have just mended my first pocket with my first french seam all from watching this video. Thank you so very much!
Great job! Glad you found this. Please have a look at some others on my channel. Cheers!
Yet again, you have made the complex simple. You have such a gift for explaining and demonstrating a fairly tricky procedure in such a way that we less-experienced sewers can think: I can probably give that a go. Thank you!
Thanks Jessica. That's exactly what I want to hear as that is always my goal. Thanks for watching🙂
For a DIYer this seems very complex and complicated to fix a hole in a pocket. Nothing easy here.
Thank you so much for this tutorial, you did a great job from a teaching standpoint. Even though I've been sewing for years, I felt nervous about possibly ruining a pair of pants. I read the comments of the beginning sewers in the comment section, which helped me feel more confident. I learned a new skill. Now, I want to replace all of those shallow pockets in my jeans and dress pants! I'll be following you from now on!
Thanks so much Brenda! I appreciate the kind words. Happy Sewing😊
Fantastic instructions and video. After not sewing for many years, I was able to follow your instructions and emulate your pattern and pocket. Thank you, I'm so very grateful for your guidance.
Thanks so much for watching Irene. I appreciate the feedback. My goal is to make it clear for everyone and get a nice result. Please have a look at some of my other videos and let me know what you think. Have a great day!
So true and it's the same for me., in that I used to sew most of my children's clothes when they were little. I like to repair whenever possible and all these tutorials teach us how to do exactly that and in a professional way for a professional result. I'm so grateful to Angela for all the effort and time put into sharing her skills with us. She is a gifted Teacher! 👋👍💐🇦🇺
Thank you! My friend had a pair of favorite shorts and he's over the moon with the repair I did for him.
Great! Thanks for watching😊
Awesome instructions, pleasant voice, not too wordy. Will definitely check out your other videos. Thank you!
Thanks so much for your kind words. I hope you enjoy them 🙏😊
I figured out how to do this fairly recently, but I squared the patch to make it easier for me lol brilliant skill to have, as most pockets are made from material that is too soft and thin, and I understand it's for comfort, but it's not practical if you intend to actually use the pocket lol!
I have fixed many a pockets over the years. Most can’t handle keys and change that some people carry around……
Wow! looks do-able. Will try it out today albeit with 1/10th of your skill and a much bigger rip ;)
You can do it! Just take it slow.😊
Thank you for a fantastic video. Exactly what I was searching for. I only patched one side but followed your method. Curves are tough!!
Great to hear! Yes curves can be tricky but you will master with practice😊
Thank you for this! Such a straightforward guide and very much appreciated :)
Glad it was helpful! Please share and check out some of my other videos. Cheers!😊
I can tell you've had training and done this professionally. The attention to detail is very impressive and I'll definitely be borrowing some of the little "tricks" like cutting notches for my own projects 👍
Yes I’ve been doing this professionally for a very long time. Thanks for watching😊
To follow up, I've now fixed my pocket and it worked great. Thanks very much 😁
Love your video. Simple and to the point. No unnecessary talk lol
Glad you liked it!
I love your sewing. It is professional and I learned a lot from your channel. Nice work!
Thank you so much! Glad it’s helpful
I'm replacing the whole pocket so this helps some. I won't be going for neat and tidy like yours though lol. The old pocket is worn from top to bottom. Been researching and measuring and cutting material now I'm planning my attack. Thanks for the visual help.
Thanks for watching. Happy Sewing!
Félicitations! Superbes bonnes explications et les images sont très claires, facile à suivre. Vous êtes une bonne enseignante. Il y a beaucoup de détails important auxquels vous nous faites penser ce qui nous permet d’apprendre à faire un beau travail. Merci beaucoup!
Merci beaucoup. Tellement content d'entendre ça. Heureux que vous ayez trouvé cela utile. Bonne journée!!
I totally agree with Jessica Jones, this is the second time I have referred to this tutorial, the instructions are excellent and I am very happy with the results. This method gives a really professional and practical result.
Thanks Michelle! Glad it’s helpful😊
Thank you so much for this video. I needed to know this for a repair I’m doing.
Glad it helped😊
Thank you Angela 🪡🧵
Thanks for watching!😊
Thank you so much ! Very helpful!
Great tutorial, thank you
Thanks for this! Really helpful for a beginner.
Glad it helps. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful
Thank you. This is so very helpful.
Glad it was helpful! Please share and have a look at my other videos. Have a great day!😊🙏
You made it look so easy. Thanks
You’re welcome .Just follow step and by step. Be accurate and it won’t be that bad😊. Thanks for watching!
So detailed and clear for any beginners to follow. Background music is not loud when you are explaining. 😉
Thank you. Glad you think so😊
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
I really learn a lot with u thanks dear
Glad to hear that😊
Great tutorial
Thank you! Cheers!
Buenos dias. Aunque no entiendo el idioma, la explicación es expertacular. Mil gracias. desde Colombia- Cali.
Gracias. Agradezco tus amables palabras. Puede seleccionar subtítulos en español en su configuración. ¡Qué tengas un lindo día!😊
That is so brilliant. I usually simply patched the pocket.
Thank you Olive. It’s not that much more work than patching but will have a much nicer result. Thanks for watching. Please check out some of my other videos. Cheers!
So helpful! Unfortunately, I didn't want to bother so I donated the shorts before I accidentally found your video. But next time, I'll fix the pocket hole. Thank you!
Thanks for watching🙏😊
The pockets I need to repair are even more badly ripped, almost all the way from top to bottom… but I will see today if I can use your method in any way to replace the pockets !
Happy sewing!😊
Great process…I’ll need to repeat view a few times b4 I completely get it, but that’s usually my process!!🥴
Thank you. Have fun!
I have a hard time doing the final French seam as it has to go over the ends of the other seam. Otherwise, I'm getting pretty good at this. Thank you!
Try using a tiny hammer to gently flatten down the seam before going over and use a piece of cardboard to lift back of presser foot .
What a great video. Thank you for sharing your expertise. Can you explain what the three initial notches as well as the later "half-inch" notches are for?
The notches are added so that you can match the edges exactly where it needs to be to sew the seams together accurately. I used one notch for top and 2 together for the bottom. This way you don’t accidentally sew one upside down. The notches that are cut later are halfway through the seam not ½”. This allow the seam to spread open along the curve when you sew the next stitchline for french seam.
@@NotchesSewing That's about what I figured. Thanks replying!
Also I meant that the notches are a "half-inch apart" according to the video. 😀
Wanted to follow up with my success story. I had a few problems (mainly the existing fabric seemed to be getting stretched so the new fabric came up a bit short), but I managed to repair my pocket! It's slightly smaller than original and the sewing is a bit wonky, but it's way better than before.
Thanks for your helpful video!
Good on you!! Should you ever need to do again, just cut the new fabric extra wide at sides, join the seams first and cut down what you don’t need. The main thing is you can use your pockets😊. Thanks for watching. Will have. Video soon for holes in a sweater
@@NotchesSewing Ah...I see what you mean about simply using extra fabric. Thanks again. 😀
Dittos! Can you please tell me a little about the type of fabric that you added? I would like to get strong, soft material (cotton maybe?) for a repair that will last. I collect rocks when I hike.
I am using cotton calico in the video. You can use drill or a lightweight denim. Maybe just add another layer right at bottom of pocket for the rocks.
This is wonderful! I'm going to attempt this today. But dumb question, when you say right side, which one is the right side? Is the right side the side your hands touch when you wear the pants, or is it the side that touches your body?
Thanks so much. Yes the right side is what your hand will be touching when in the pocket. It can be confusing when using fabric that has same colour on both sides. You can set to a slower playback speed if it helps. Cheers!
Can a carpenter fix pockets? Should be interesting!
I think you totally can! You can measure accurately and have great attention to detail already. 😊
Mam thank you, I live alone and don't have any of these tools and do not even know to sew. Is there any video of quick fix from you and instead of sewing, I use adhesive?
Sorry no I am mainly a sewing channel. You can try with just needle and thread and sew by hand. I wouldn’t trust just using glue for things in my pocket.
@@NotchesSewing Thank you, I understand.
Hello there! 👋 I'd like to know the name of the presser foot that's on your machine? I'm looking for one of that same width for my Brother Sewing Machine.
Hi Trish, I am using and industrial machine and that is a standard ¼” foot. I have 2 links for ¼” presser feet for domestic machines down in the description of the video.
¼ " Plastic Presser Foot amzn.to/3PvRGW2
¼” Metal Presser Foot amzn.to/3uRIGm9
Just make sure your needle is in the correct position when sewing as a standard domestic foot had a wide opening allowing for zig zag stitches and you may start off in wrong position .
Thanks for watching😊
@@NotchesSewing Thank you so much. 😊
Nice. Thank you. I might finally repair my work trousers rather than swearing every time I forget about the holes and my keys/purse/change ends up on the floor.
You can do it! Thanks for watching.😊
What is the point of cutting the notches, is to create space to spread the cloth to get even ?
it’s to make sure you are placing the pieces together the right way and not upside down. It can be confusing with a curved piece.
@@NotchesSewing Oh thanks that is a great tip.
Now, being a bit of a chauvinist pig, as a guy I was with her all the way uptil 4:45 - Doesnt the pocket get blocked by the procedure starting there?
That stitch is to hold the seam down flat onto each layer. It is not sewn through both
I'd rather lose my keys than to try to do this. I thought that the speed of light was the fastest thing in the universe but your video was even faster. I will try using duct tape
You’ve got a great sense of humour! You can change your settings to watch at slower playback speed if you want to try this. Not sure duct tape is a great option.😊
@@NotchesSewing Love a woman who can appreciate humor rather than get offended! Comments were made in fun. I have respect for your talents, as for me, I'm really going to try a zip loc bag outside of the pocket and tape it with duct tape to the pocket. Zip loc bags are waterproof in the wash. Let me know if you need anything fixed around your house using my ludicrous ingenuity...
ok I am gonna have to offer duct taped zip loc bags as an alternative to my clients…..😁. I’m imagining the crinkly sound it’ll make all day 🤣
