10 Pettiest Things Developers Have Hidden In Games

- When developers are worked too hard or rivalries pop up between studios, pettiness is bound to ensue. The nature of video games actually makes it relatively easy for developers to hide such jabs taken at the expense of others, whether as a way of venting their frustration or just having a little fun, and it’s this phenomenon that we’re looking at today. From Two-Faced Tanner in GTA III to Timmy Vermicelli in Driv3r here are the 10 Pettiest Things Developers Have Hidden In Games!

"For those of you not alive during the 1990's....."
Well now I feel a million years old.
Few days ago I met someone with a drivers license who was born in 2004. Took me a while to understand that’s perfectly possible.
Tell me about it. There's a guy I work with who was born in 2002. He's 21 this year 💀
My mother got pregnant as a result of the ‘Welcome Home’ party after Dad was repatriated after the German surrender - in 1945. As a software developer and programmer, I worked with my own grandchildren (or so it often felt) during the years just prior to my retirement.
@@toolittletoolate3917 Now my 1966 birthdate makes me feel like a spritely young thing, thank you!
was 15 in 1990 and I do not feel old.
Given how the skull is positioned on a spike, the Doom 2016 easter egg seems to combine both the Commander Keane and the Jon Romero easter eggs into one.
Oh, I never made that connection, but it's pretty accurate!
Hearing the history of Nintendo and Sega rivalry explained to provide context for kids born after that era of gaming makes me feel like I need an ear trumpet and a walking stick ;_;
Kinda.
Although I disagree that it compares that "Bitter Rivalry" of Sega and Nintendo with MS and Sony. There is a lot more professional respect nowadays. Back then, however, it was borderline a war.
Genuinely surprised Dan Hibiki didn't make the cut. A jab at SNK that managed to transcend the original rivalry and become a beloved character himself.
IIRC Dan is what directly led to the creation of the phenomenal CVS series of crossover fighters, with Dan having a guaranteed spot on the roster as a nod to the rivalry
Dan is a playable character not exactly hidden
I would say he Doesn't really count anymore what started off as a bit of an f you to snk is now an embodiment off their friendship
Earthworm Jim really needs a reboot. Fun game and cartoon show.
I loved Commander Keen. Keen 1 and 4 were both shareware games and already installed on the pc at my daycare in grade school.
In talking about the Tanner references in the PS2 GTA games, I'm surprised the one in San Andreas wasn't mentioned, since that's probably the most well known out of all of them.
No reference to Duke Nukem 3D having "One Dead Space Marine" in it?
The really dumb thing about the "power armour is for pussies" comment in DNF is that they got rid of the traditional finding medipacks for the regenerative health like you'd find in Halo, so you're literally just doing the same thing lol.
11:18, did she honesty say Diddy Kongs Quest?
In regards to Commander Keen, there is a master collection for C.K in Doom Eternal.
There is also Might and Magic 6 where they recreated the developers office in the game and made their boss a goblin.
Here is one that was forgotten, I believe it was in Duke Nukem 3D where you run across a corpse of the Doom guy, and Duke quips that is one doomed guy.
Dead space marine
In order to destroy a billboard, you have to focus on it rather than ignore it. Sounds more like advertising than rebellion to me.
Geralt took a shot at AC because he's got the weakest ankles in gaming history lol
Big the cat in sonic adventure 2 being in every level due to the amount of hate he got
To build a little bit off of the Doom Easter egg there is a running series that Commander Keen is doomguy's grandfather do with that as you will
i read the title as 'prettiest' and was awaiting pretty things
To make matters worse...
Commander Keen was Doom Guy's father.
And bj blazkowitz's grandson
Um duke nukem did the EXACT SAME THING in Duke 3D.
That's one Doomed Space Marine - Doom
I ain't afraid of no Quake - Quake
Finding Luke upside and Dead in a Snowy Cave - Star Wars Dark Forces
Ther are references to Indiana Jones and Lara Croft as well, I feel like peole get all bent out of shape when DK Forever did this and yet it was in Duke3D, DNF was not the best game out there but it was literally a continuation of DN3D, I should know I literally played all 4 episodes of DN3D:AE a month before DNF and it had the same humor and same style.
"Oh what pretty eyes you have"
Actually Driver morphed into Watch_Dogs through time, the passing on of copyright and all that legal guff. It's doing well enough in it's new guise, though still far less of a big name that GTA to be sure.
OMG! I’ve never understood that bit of internal dialog when Geralt comes across the white-robed corpse until now! Thank you very much!
Duke Nukem Forever saying "power armor is for pussies" and the power armor shown looks like master cheifs suit
This is exactly what I would do if I was a developer.
More devs need to make playful jabs that make their legal teams sweat.
Assassin's Creed was in its "Hay Day" Kudos! Bravo!
you missed the Tanner insult in GTA Los Santos - break into Mad Dog's crib and hear his security guards scream ÿou suck Tanner at their game console
Pandemic Studios probably got people to pay more attention to the billboards than they would have otherwise. I suspect that EA got what they wanted regardless.
The "Welcome" banner easter egg is also in the Dead by Daylight Resident Evil map
What about Link's grave in Final Fantasy 1?
Doom eternal has commander Keen as a cosmetic you can play as.
I've always loved the cheap shots that Rockstar took at other game franchises in the GTA series. I've played essentially all of the "clones" (Driver, The Getaway, True Crime, etc...) so for me the jokes work even better now.
In what way is Driver a GTA clone?
History is written by the victor
"Power armor is for pussies" is still a funny line. The only funny line in the game fore sure, though.
Commander Keen, and other pc side scrollers for that matter, failed because a controller is vastly superior for the side scrolling format. This was before console makers allowed for their controllers to be easily connected to a PC. Which is why the genre enjoyed continual sales throughout various games on consoles but died off on PC.
I dunno, Commander Keen sold a ridiculous number of Gravis Gamepads, it being one of the first true side scrollers on PC. They couldn't keep them or the Y connectors for 2-player games in stock that summer.
@@DeAthWaGer Yes, in 1991. How many gamepads did it sell in the mid-late 90's when consoles really hit their stride.
@@ravenshrike Capcom had a 6-button packed-in with MegaMan X and Super Street Fighter 2, which also sold like crazy.
But I'd say once USB came around, it didn't matter anymore, all the consoles had the exclusives and better games for a good decade or more. PC people kept busy with emulation ;)
Jesus Christ I misread the title as ‘Prettiest things developers have left in games.’ and was really confused by the thumbnail.
Oooohhh. PETtiest, I read the title as PRETtiest 😂. I was really confused at first 😅
“Here Lies Link” - on a headstone in a village in the “Dawn of Souls” remake of Final Fantasy. Extra cheeky since it was on a Nintendo platform (GBA)
it was a bit cheeky, but it turned out into a somewhat funny collaboration. in one of the zelda games nintendo returned the favor and wrote something like "here lies cloud"
@@corruptedplayer which Zelda game?
@@mattalan6618 i think zelda 2
@@corruptedplayer Zelda 2 came out in 1988
@@mattalan6618 in the original FF1for the nes/FDS links gravestone is also there. the game that op meant is a GBA remake of FF1. though i can't for the life of me find the easteregg response in a zelda game. i just know thar it's in a older title
I don't care what anybody says, Sega GameGear was pretty awesome. That backlit screen was a game-changer.
Lynx did it first
You should do a 10 prettiest things developers have hidden in games. Like the Halo 1 easter egg that was a love message.
That's what i first read when i saw this video lol
Y'all need too check definitions before calling things petty
You guys forgot Link's tombstone in the original Final Fantasy.
P.S. I still hate how headshots are the same as shots to the arm in the RE2 and RE3 remakes...soooo stupid.
Passive aggressiveness is best.
Passive - you don't get anywhere, and you look weak.
Aggressive - you don't get anywhere, and you look like a jerk.

Has anyone gone and redid commander keen as commander keemstar yet? Seems like it would be fucking hysterical
if that happened Keemstar would probably sue. seems to me he is the type of guy that would do that
I'm so sorry, I have to.
Diddy Kong's Quest
Diddy's Kong Quest
leap of faith is pretty realistic.
some guy fell out of a plane and landed in a hay stack once
"once".
Just a teensy bit different than those 'pretty realistic' leaps of faith.
Those always cracked me up, usually eliciting an "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand dead." from me on the way down :D
@@AsmodeusMictian well if it works for a guy falling from 20k feet i think it was i mean its a good fall pad if you hit it right everytime.
the unrealistic part would be piles of hay piled up all over the place consistently and same thickness n everything
@@greensoplenty6809 "if you hit it right every time."
Right.
You know, I'd be willing to bet that this isn't in common use for a reason though, wouldn't you? I'd guess it would be the high failure rate in conjunction with the slightly and possibly lethal consequences for getting it wrong. Not exactly forgiving, you know? ;-)
@@AsmodeusMictian just saying it can work even from crazy heights
im guessing theres a myth buster episode about it
and its a videogame where theres no way to miss, dont gotta be so serious

Cheers, mate lol. Have a good one :P
The need to redeem Duke's honor for sure
i forgot world in flames severs were going down and now i am locked out of platinum sucks because i wanted to get that one
Oh I thought the title said "prettiest"!
😆
I thought it said PRETTIEST things
"Doom style giblets"
Why's that sound so funny in a British accent?
Happy New Year lovely peoples.
Now make a video about the prettiest things. Just to confuse everyone here.
the gex easter egg has got the people at triplejump smoking meth. saying it was justified for him to act that way is a little strong.. cool funny easter egg.. but justified? god no lol
Who is any of this petty? 🤷♂️
No mention of the Duke nukem 3d space marine???
Ashton probably has the most English voice I've ever heard
I bought Duke Nukem Forever, years after release, because of the bad press. It was totally adequate. Neither particularly good nor bad. I simply don’t understand the hate it gets. Its Doom reference you showed is pretty funny. I feel like you guys are just hopping on the haters bandwagon. Petty.
It wasn't a Doom reference shown in this video. It was a Halo reference. Duke says 'Power armor is for pussies' as a jab at Halo's Master Chief who wears said armor in all games he's present in.
And the reason DNF gets hated on so much is because it was a sequel *15 years in the fucking making* And it felt like it was stuck in the worst part of the 90's, with none of the charm and all of the spite and childishness that most of its fans had outgrown by the time DNF came out, if they played the original games back when they first released.
It fully deserves every bit of hate it gets. This is one bandwagon I'm happy to be a part of, because I agree with everything they say. DNF is a pile of garbage that didn't know how to let go of its own former glory days and couldn't get over the fact that it had been replaced by other franchises.
It has very little redeeming qualities. You're entitled to think it was fine, if that's how you feel about it, but I feel like most people disliking DNF has nothing to do with bandwagon thinking and them just honestly feeling like this is a game that couldn't evolve into modern times and left a bitter taste in their mouths, and I can't blame them for that, because I felt the exact same way.
@@Xylarxcode It’s not garbage. It’s definitely serviceable. More good than bad. That goes for the jokes, too. I can’t see that there’s an objective reason to dump on the game. The feeding frenzy that tore this game apart at launch baffles me, once I played it. It’s a bandwagon of haters, over what? Expectations. Gawd.
@@christophercollins3632 It's a sequel, bro. Every sequel has to live up to the expectations of the ones that came before it. And if it doesn't, the fans will be disappointed and they have a right to be. That's inevitable. Movies, books, games. If they're a sequel, they've got a standard to live up to. Most people lower their expectations a bit, because a sequel is rarely as good as the original (some exceptions aside), but even with this lowered expectations in mind, sometimes a sequel falls so far short of the mark that you can't even believe it's part of the same franchise that was so good once upon a time. DNF falls into that category.
You say it's more good than bad. You're allowed to think that. I'm not going to try and change your mind, but most others don't see it that way. I sure don't. If it's going to carry the name Duke Nukem, it has to live up to the standards previously set in the series. With a 15 year time gap between entries, it was always going to be extremely unlikely that this would happen, but they released it anyway and thus subjected it to our criticism and, much as most of us expected, failed to live up to its predecessors success, because it's not the 90's anymore. Times have changed. The fans have changed. Duke, however, did not change and remained a macho symbol of a bygone era that felt out of touch with today's society and fans that were kids in the 90's were adults by the time this came out and had outgrown Duke's childish insults and sexist attitude. Its gameplay only proved to be mediocre at best (definitely not up to the standards set by games like Halo or Gears of War), and so it was received with disappointment.
If you want to keep liking it, then by all means, keep liking it. That's your right and I'm not going to try and take that away from you. But most of us don't share that feeling and, as you are entitled to your opinion, we are entitled to ours. Just because our opinion falls into a majority doesn't mean you have to join our way of thinking, but you shouldn't be surprised that we feel this way either, given all the reasons I've laid out for why this game failed, from our perspectives.
Stop yelling at us!!!! Please check your audio or something.
The commentary on the Duke Nukem Forever one feels weirdly salty, like Ashton was taking personal offense to it.
I know people are going to try and dismiss it as it being because Duke Nukem Forever was a crap game, but that excuse doesn't really fly because DRIV3R was also on the list, and she didn't even mention how terrible that game was (she did mention Driver died not long after that game's release, but that game being a massive flop is the catalyst. It was every bit as awful as DNF. Possibly even worse since it was blatantly unfinished, whereas DNF was just crap).
I dunno, it just feels bizarre. It wasn't even that big of a jab on DNF's part. The Witcher and GTA/Driver ones were a lot more vicious than a throwaway line dissing Master Chief's armor. I'd go as far as to say the DNF one was on the same level as the DKC2 No Hopers one immediately afterward. I think some earlier Duke games even had worse ones, where you could actually kill rival game protagonists.
To be fair, since she's joined, she has lots of "im offended" type of lists now.
@@ThatShyGuyMatt I wasn't aware. I have watched a few of her videos, but none of the ones I saw really had any moments that stood out to me like the DNF thing here. I'll take your word for it, though.
@@firstnamelastnamesb I dont hate her mind you. But she's very young and part of that group that is offended by everything sadly. Especially old games that were made in a different time in culture.
I do recall she had a list where she complained about things in video games that were offensive. The comment section went nuts on her. Got a ton of downvotes. I think she sometimes hurts the channel more then help it.
It's fine if you want to be offended by everything. Just don't whine about being offended all the time.
Ashton doesn't write the lists. The script writer is always listed in the description. Anyhoo, I think it comes off as pretty pathetic for a terrible game like DNF to take shots at better and more successful franchises. Same applies to Driv3r, but I guess I can't blame them for wanting to fire back after getting shit on unprovoked by Rockstar.
@@ThatShyGuyMatt I don't have any issue with Ashton, either. I was just saying it struck me as kinda odd. Wasn't intended to be a stab at her or anything like that, I'd have said the same thing if it was any of the other members of the Triple Jump team.
sorry but your voice is aching at my hears, I cant watch this video
2 wrongs don't make a right, but 2 rights make a u-turn 😉
And 3 rights make a left.
Another MGSV bout of pettiness from Japanese John Romero: Quiet's need for exposing as much skin as possible, and stuff like the stripper dance in the chopper, came about because Kojima got rejected by the actress who modeled the character when he repeatedly asked her to date him. Brilliant, me fookin' arse; guy made a buncha revenge porn out of a character.
Talk about petty...though your rant about DNF expalains why you skipped the Lara Croft (though that one might have been hard to explain and stay family-friendly) and Doom marine refs in the earlier Time to Kill and 3D outings (not to mention the BttF ref). Not to mention the Indiana Jones ref in Tomb Raider..4, if I remember right.
A good one!
👽
the billboard one is not as cool as you think
nor is it a big fuck you to ea or anything.. they were told to do something with billboards and did as they were told.. just because you blow them up or destroy them does not make it a fuck you in anyway possible.. it is a game lol.
