- I have created a TAB for this song to the best of my abilities. Guitar setup posted below. It is located at tabs.ultimate-g... . Recorded at The Melting Point in Athens, GA. 12-01-2010 With permission. Lyrics can be found at www.cowboylyric... This song is on the "Power of the Pontchartrain". It is the 3rd track and labeled "Title Track". I have this from Amazon and that is the way they have it labeled. Don't ask me why. Has to be an error in the way they entered it.
I recieved the following from Tab's guitar tech.
Hey, I just came accross this post for "Shelter Me". I was Tab's road manager and guitar tech for about two years... I tuned all his giutars standard (440 hz), always with GHS 11's (custom gauge with a heavier big E string), and his guitar always went straight into a Super Reverb and a Music Man 2 x 12"... Later, a Twin Reverb was used instead of the Music Man amp. This was before he got the Category 5 signature amps. The 70's silverface Super Reverb was his main amp, and my favorite tone (vol anywhere from 4 - 9 depending on the venue, treb 7 - 9, mid 6 - 8, bass 3 - 4, reverb 2 - 4)... The settings vary from gig to gig. The other amps were always added just for a little extra power and low end, again depending on the size of the stage and show. I've seen him use just the Super at "Stevie Rays" in Louisville, KY, and at the end of the night the volume was almost on 4. It was a smaller club, but he had the same sound still. We did a few casinos, and he had to watch his stage volume there, too.
Anyway, this was around 2002 - 2003, and after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, so I'm sure a few things may have changed, like his new amps, but that's probably about it. My first job with him was at the recording of his 2002 CD, "Wetlands", on which I received a mention in the thank you notes of the CD cover...
Hope this info gets to the right person. Sorry so long, but I like to share. It was a magical part of my life...

it's some of the best blues anyone could pour out that's what it is
Tab is one of the best blues guitarists ever. He sings and plays with such soul and passion. I've seen him many times live and I am NEVER disappointed. So glad he is able to do the title song for the tv show "Sons of Guns"
Incredible talent and couldn't be more of a nice dude. Every time he plays in northern VA at one of the bigger venues, after the show he goes to this little hole-in-the-wall bar called JV's to just hang out and jam with whatever band is playing that night ( Played with Memphis Gold and his band after his show at the Birchmere recently ) he just hung out and drank with us into the wee hours....he likes his red wine!
PAL, IF YOU WANT THE LORD OF HEAVEN TO SHELTER YOU UNDER HIS WINGS, DRINKING INTO THE WEE HOURS AT A BAR AIN'T THE WAY TO GET GOD'S ATTENTION FOR THE BETTER...NO DRUNKARD IS GOING TO MAKE IT TO HEAVEN...READ THE SCRIPTURES...GREAT SONG THOUGH...BUT, THE ALCOHOL IS GOING TO HAVE TO 'GO'...;)

Hypocrites
they run new believers off shame on you Praise Be to The Lord and Tab is a treasure
There is enough good blues music on YT that I may never have to watch TV again, except for football and golf. I have met Tab twice. Very nice guy and a great bluesman.
I come back to watch this performance every so often. It is just smoking, can't get enough.
Just saw Tab in concert in Egg Harbor, WI. Best I've ever seen. Could listen to his music all day long.
I've played over 50 years so I know of what I speak.
Tab Benoit has the most phenomenal right hand. Exceptionally expressive and agile. Any guitarist could watch the full 5 minutes just watching his picking hand and learn how he uses the full range, from neck pickup to right next to the bridge. Myself, I'm just mesmerized by his performance. His guitar sounds different depending where he picks. I'm afraid so many guitarist now have such processed sound that even if they did pick the full range it would still sound the same.
When the King Biscuit Blues Festival rolls around this October and Tab is the Saturday night main stage headliner, I will have seen him 3 times in 1 calendar year. You can never get too much Tab! And Corey is super animated on stage.
This song is so important with the Covid-19. Anyone else watching in March or April of 2020? This dude can play!
so much more important than ever. Such an inspiration.
Now it is November and covid-19 is worse. It is right on more than ever. He is a combo of SRVa and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Great song!
It is now February 11 . I caught the virus and had no effects except headaches and brain fog which I pray aren't permanent. And I pray the two shots I took are safe.
@@chrisbeck4915 dude turn off the news and live your life lol
I am living my life as a quad; I broke my neck five years ago. I read the word and listen to real gospels preaching like Voddie Baucham and RC Sproul. I don't have much time for the news or TV period. Impractical Jokers. I love to laugh and make people laugh. Adam asked God "Why did You make Eve so beautiful "? God said "So you would love her" Adam asked "Why did You make her so dumb"? God said "So she would love you" Drum flam and cymbal crash.
Tab's one of the best musicians out there. I'm glad he's getting more recognition due to Sons of Guns.
Shame the boss turned out to be a filthy paedophile
Tab is one hell of a guitar player and performer. An awesome person as well. The best to his fans.
This recording is so good, it's like being there.
Thanks
ya i got it playin on the surtound sound while enjoying some medicine this fine friday night whooooo hoooo
Yes, it is good. Really so. I'm glad Tab Benoit is still sounding so excellent himself.
Anyone who's never caught Tab live owes it to themselves to catch Tab live. Amazing talent and showmanship (hell, if music didn't work out he could make it in stand-up comedy...lol)
For real! He is very funny
Reminds me of Mitch Hedberg.
ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SONG!! Saw Tab a few years back in Fort Smith, AR. Such a talent! Being a bass player, I focused a lot on his bass player. Love his energy and the man can groove his butt off!!
HOW I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS GUY BLOWS ME AWAY!!
I just adore Tab. His shows are always fantastic
This guy is superb , great voice , great guitar , great songs !!!
WELCOME TO THE BRIGHTER SIDE !... Tab has been playing for over 30 years, and is more than a "TV show theme song". He is the real deal. Thank you Tab, for being on the road for us! "NC in the house".
Curious: I just knew a little about him. What TV theme song?
Probably one of my favorite songs from him. Tab fucking rocks. Kicks the shit outta that guitar
Wow!! I've heard of Tab Benoit before but this is the first time I've actually heard his music. Just incredible. Brings to mind a young Jimi Hendrix. Plus, we share the same birthday.
Great Buddy and Julie Miller song doen with passion by Tab
Tab you get into your music that's what makes it better. You feel it and makes audience want to move and groove.Thank You
We love getting out to the Melting Point to check out Tab and the boys. Love us some Cory, too. Thanks for sharing.

Gosh I love Tab!! Seen him many times. Rockin band too! This guy could just open his mouth and sound good..
saw tab this year feb 21 great show at the melting point... what a talent, cant wait to catch him again...
Just saw him tonight. High energy, gutted/swamp/blues. His bass player - hits more notes than most lead guitarists, when he wants to. Thanks to Jim Blair for turning me onto this fantastic yet humble artist some 20+ years ago. Wish I had bought tickets for both shows!
Bass Player is Travis Carlton, son of Guitar Legend Leisure Suit Larry :-)
swamp blues, so that's what it's call, for some reason I get a swampy feeling or sometimes a western but that's is so wrong.
sometimes people call it swamp pop too- check out wwoz.org - you can stream new orleans/louisiana/blues music for free any time if you like this type
Man, I'm just hearing about this guy. Love this stuff!
Lori Leger Sorry I'm just now getting to you. if you love Tab, check out the ones listed below. you won't regret it!
Samantha Fish, Mike Zito, Scott MaGill, Josh Garrett Band. For a special treat, my friends Norma Hopson and Jason Touchette, The Curse and the Cure.
Me too - 3 years after you lol.
Great Video! I just went to a Cajun Festival last weekend. Tab was playing, I have seen him there 4 times already.
He is just as good live, if not better than studio.
infamous lyrics....made 1 of da best blues song ever, kudos to Tab!!!
I love this guy's music,,, I wish to hear it far more often.
Love this man's music!
That tele is not the easiest rig to entertain with. Especially with limited tones. Even though, if a talented person playing blues from the soul and has a solid band behind them. Well, as you can see or hear rather can absolutely freaking jam !!
I'm a tried and true blues hound.
Love it!
Don't know how many more comments I can make about how good he is and I've seen a lot of Blues singers and players from New Orleans to Memphis Tenn from The opening of BB Kings in Memphis to Nashville tis a great artists
The best in the business!!! Biloxi blues man love it brother.. Been a big. Fan for years love the Power of the Pontchartrain album the best in the business👍
Saw his him in concert a few years ago at a tiny place in SF Bay Area. Great show.
Can't wait coming back to The Melting Point 12-6. Really like the video total focus on his guitar work. Also at Smith's Olde Bar on 12-4&5
One of the best live acts I've ever seen & I'm old in the tooth. "
Robin Trower with Cajun Seasoning Tab is AMAZING!!!
man ever since i watched sons of guns, ive been looking for this track, absolutely badass man
I love this guy. That bluesy sound. Makes me want to go on a road trip.
YEP.......I WAS THERE FOR MY BIRTHDAY PRESENT. GREAT MEMORY.............TAB IS THE MAN!
Simply an awesome tune!!! Tab knows how to make that guitar scream!!!
@it447 Sounds like standard tuning...either way, the riff lines are rooted in A-minor...E-G-A on low E string. Then E-G-A on A and D strings. second riff is A (high E), D (7th fret G string)-full step bend, A (7th fret D string). The notes that follow the verse are A-G-E-D-C-A-G-A using the bottom of the 1st and 5th position A-minor pentatonic scale forms. Chords for the verse and bridge are Fm-Dmaj-Fm-Emaj-Dmaj-Cmaj. Give this a shot and see what you think.
Can't wait to see him tonight for the first time!! Better late than never!!
@bmstylee --Yes I have talked to Corey after the shows and he seems to be a very nice guy. I love it when he and Tab do their Bass and drum duet during the show and Corey really does get into the music. I try and record all three in the group because they all have something to give to the performance.
Someday I want to be able to play like that. He is a big reason I got excited about playing guitar again
This song is great.
This is just sooooo Damn good. You can just feel it right down to your soul!
Absolutely love it! Tab, you've got one strong voice. gifted
I saw him open for Trower in Portland Oregon ----He rocked the house!
Just saw him in Boca. Great sound!!
ozbass, the boss just handed me this to learn for next week. It may sound simple on a glance, but by the time you work in the key changes,, ride on the groove.. this is pretty complicated. Hat's off to Tab, no convergent occurrence, but tab this I will!.
I tabbed this main part out years ago. You can find it here. Maybe it will help in your learning. tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/tab/tab_benoit/shelter_me_tabs_1044171 there are other versions at that site too so pick your poison.
I would bet millions that Tab is a HUGE SRV fan, it's everywhere in this vid....
I knew it had to be Tab when I heard the song on the show but had never heard this song before. I only have a couple of his albums but he is awesome.
Great Song! Great Message! Tab made this song his own! Thanks for sharing it with the world.
KNOW I CAN'T SPELL IMEAN TAB YOU ARE THE NEW KING LONG LIVE THE KING
Guy is a great guitarist. I love to see him live
Wow. I love the blues all over again, dam that was cool as.
I was at one of the dirtiest, nastiest bars I have ever been in, and I stuck this in the jukebox between some southern rock and country.
You should of seen the look on people's faces.
+Tête Dur
There is this bar in Murfreesboro, TN. Gentleman Jim's. College town. There are two Gentlemen Jims. Clean Jims and Dirty Jims. Clean Jim's is where the fraternities and sororities hang out. They have Busch Beer on tap and that is about it. $3 Pitchers. Dirty Jim's is just like it sounds. It is sort of like the backwoods place Mel Gidson goes into when he is looking for the Right kind of volunteers in "Patriot."
I usually start the Jukebox off with Hotel California. It is long, and I try to get all my songs in before it is over. Given this bar, I probably hit up Metallica "Whiskey in a Jar," "Think ill Just Sit Here and Drink" by Merele Haggard, and "Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound." Softening up some hard ground.
I play "Shelter Me" and a couple guys look at me with shock and disgust. They have a bad spirit, and they don't like anything that glorifies The Lord. I just sit their like a super confident rock of a man and drink beer and take shots not caring.
You should see my record collection. I have country and Western metal old timey gospel opera classical jazz blues soul big band ragtime and what not
Put on yer bucket,, the Jolly Roger,, Wilmington NC Dirty,, Parts of ships on the walls.. I was right at home. oz
Adam Ramsey I’m from the Boro! Spent a lotta time at GJ’s!
LOL
1115 likes and only 3 dislikes for a reason- The man is a blues god.
This dude stole the show at the Doheny Blue's festival! Awesome stuff!
That's one soulful bass player
One of my favorite songs he does along with Too Many Dirty Dishes ..he is the best
My favorite is Whole Lotta Soul.
His mama is a major force in Louisiana horse racing. Her best horse to date - a stallion named Star Guitar. He ran out over $1.7 million. I see where he got his name!
The tabs on Ultimate Guitar are some what helpful but not quite complete, a lot of people would be more grateful is someone would expand on what is already there. Awesome Song!!!
The man can straight play that thing!!!👍
A great singer, three great musicians, and a great message in the lyrics. Read the Psalms!
Fayetteville here we come. Can't wait to hear those category fives & that thinline
AWESOME!!!
Thanks for posting
I needed that!!
thumbs up for knowing tab before sons of guns... i knew him a LONG time before it because he is my cousin
Very nice quality, great song, thanks for posting!
My 6 year old is dancing with the Lord to this!
Lin my good friend rated Tab's concert as the best she's been to in a long time.😆🎯🤘⚡
Mr. Tab Benoit,, please keep it up,,,,, Your music is AWSOME
I just got lucky and caught him at a good venue and association with the TV show definitely helped. I was not aware of the TV show connection until the hit count went up and someone mentioned it in the comments.
got here via sons of guns i sooooo like this sound
tab e' uno dei migliori artisti del blues di oggi
@MrIanhall321 Yeah, he gets into it with his head for sure, Nice funky drums and bass, leaving a lot of nice holes for Tab to work in. Great stuff.
Tab does a great job with this song. Shelter Me was written by Buddy Miller and Julie (Buddy's wife) ... My favorite rendition is Three Girls with their Buddy (Buddy Miller with Patty Griffin, Emmylou Harris and Shawn Colvin). That's on youtube as well. I like Tab Benoit as well as Buddy Miller, they're both gifted musicians !!!
love the worn tele, im buying that hollowbodied version with my summer job money!
Its Louisiana Cajun swamp blues !!! lOVE lOVE lOVE ME SOME TAB..
I was gonna say that. Cajun blues baby oooo ya I tell you what
I just became of Sons of Guns and this guy. This song is so badass.
Not to be insulting, but you remind me of joe williams, steve vie, ie chicago blues, southern rock, all things that are foundational to the american spirit. Keep it up brother, you're reuniting the man with his soul.
72' Thinline Telecaster. They just came out with a reissue this year.
What a gorgeous guitar
Thanks for the info. It's helpful. Those Category 5 amps of his go for about $3400 now. Sure wish I could have one along with a Thinline like his.
FanTabuous and Tabalicious! You must catch a show. Bouncin Benoit! Shelter me...
What a beast! Got to learn this version now!
I just spent my entire day watching sons of guns season 1. This is kinda ingrained into my head now lol
@MrWalrus81 no tabs but that main run is in A minor, and then there is a back down in A minor and then on the chorus it goes to an F major, and then to a D then back to F then to an E,D,C then back to the main run in A minor, can't explain it more clearer but you gotta learn this one by ear
Tab that 1972 telecaster has been rode hard... Good talking to you bro
I love this song, I heard it on "Sons of Guns" TV show on Discovery Channel, and had to get it right away on Itunes.
How is it possible I find out about this guy today?! This man can make that Tele scream!
