Clever of your Dad to use newspapers and the chalkboard for the text. And I'm glad you didn't impose a soundtrack - the footage speaks for itself! Thanks for making this available for all to see.

My grandparents would have been 13, I think. I want to say my grandma lived near Oakley, I'd have to find out. My grandpa would have been somewhere up Bethel-New Richmond Road. Well done on this video and thank you for sharing this.

I'm glad a friend told me about this video. My Dad's house is pictured at 2:20. It was located right across from the now torn down Highlands School. This is the best picture I've seen of it.

An awesome video, thanks for sharing! You Dad and Uncle(?) did a great job with it. I like how they included shots of newspapers. A historical treasure. You should ask the National Archives and maybe Ohio and Kentucky Archives if they want a copy.

thank you so much for making this available. My grandparents lived in the 600 block of Delhi Ave in Sedamsville. I remember them talking about the flood but until I saw this I had no idea just how bad it was. I believe they were one of the 1000's that became refugees as I remember grandma saying the entire basement and main floor were flooded. Today, in my memory, I will be re-living the time I spent in Cincinnati as a child. Thanks so much.

My Dad lived at 2424 Eastern (Riverside) directly across the street from Highlands School that was torn down last fall. The house is in bad shape and probably will be torn down. Right now it has a black and orange picket fence in front of it.

Sitting here in Evansville Indiana 12-11-2022. Watching great Video. Evansville In. Is 400 feet above sea level. Louisville Kentucky is 500 feet above sea level. Cincinnati is. 600 feet above sea level. Charleston West Virginia is 700 feet above sea level. So much rain Across the Ohio river water shed. I am amazed what Mother Nature can do. Was the blockage at Cairo Illinoise???

This is a gem. I wasn't born until 1948, but I heard about this flood from my earliest recollections. My parents lived through it. My mother, her siblings, and parents had to exit their house through a 2nd story dormer window onto the roof where a rowboat was their only means of transport. It must have been horrible. For people who don't like government, I must say that only the government could have solved this problem, and the army corp of engineers did just that.

Great collection of scenes of a devastating flood. The water pumping scenes are very likely from the old Norwood waterworks on Harris Ave. My maternal grandfather worked there day and night to provide water from their wells to the community. I have a few digitized photos of tanker trucks lined up; they came from as far away as Columbus, OH to help distribute water.

Extraordinary footage of the 1937 Cincinnati flood, my mother vaguely remembers it, as she was around 7 years old then. Great shots near the end of the Central Trust Tower, built in 1913, and the Carew Tower, built in 1930, they've been a beacon for the Cincinnati skyline for a century, and they are the most recognizable skyscrapers in the history of the city. I did see the old Kroger truck going by, fantastic...

The cannon at 7:53 was located in front of the present Playhouse in the Park It was then a shelterhouse), the base of which is now the flagpole base. It was removed from the Spanish battleship Almirante Oquendo, which was destroyed by the US Navy at the Battle of Santiago Bay, Cuba on July 3, 1898. The cannon was obtained for Cincinnati by Senator Joseph Benson Foraker, and was installed in 1899 to much fanfare. It was later melted down for WWII. I have additional information available about the cannon, should anyone ever read this. Sept 1, 2015

Extraordinary footage of the 1937 Cincinnati flood, but no facts about how this city was already built up before the Europeans invaded this Circuit Board City and all of America. They enjoyed the Free Masonry along with all the other cities that were already here and built with glorious architecture from San Fran Cisco to Chicago, etc.

@@blgjaa WOW! That's MORE impressive! He was a master at exposure! (straight) 8mm was dang hard to work with, even in later decades, (Super 8 was a BIT easier, LOL) a tiny frame is super EASY to over OR under expose. I really thought it was 16mm. And the digital transfer is top-notch! Your family understands film and video! GREAT work!
