By the time you truly relate to this song its too late. Your heartbroken...
Fuckin fact
I just read this comment and started crying
I was a really bad alcoholic and my GF at the time played this for me. It's didn't get me clean, at that point, but It haunted me. It still haunts me. I am sober 2 years. We have moved on to other relationships, but I will always think about her when I hear this song.
9 Years on, I hope you found peace brother. God bless.
It’s been 8 years iv been single got sober two years ago finally this shit has haunted me since and it always will
I am not sober....but I can relate a bit....power on. Hope you are still sober
I love that I'll be a 75 year old grandpa blaring this one day and loving every second of it.
Pushing 50 now!
32 year old "retired" punk still listening to this song after first hearing it 15 years ago, it just gets better with age.
Punx never retire ! ..Just Sayin
your 32 years old???
Yup aging like fine wine!
Slim Jim I am 32 myself and somedays I feel older than fuck other day's im still young,..,.but were too young to be punks my friend the real ones are the ones that saw the exploited in the 80's and the sex pistols in the 70's not trying to be a critic brother but a lot are dying because of all the drugs and alcohol they did, and I can't say im a true punk...never really lived it , I have met a few gutter punks and there not real friendly...ha ha
oh well right, I cant do drugs anymore myself and I guess were getting old but i'll never get old old ha ha but call myself a punk, no im not , not my era , im a child product of 82 that heard the best and worst of the 90's.........
Are u against fascism and government issues? ? You are punk ! " Its not only about the music its about the movement! " .. Ian McKay 2007
This band got me through college, and art school, and now they are getting me through the real world.
hows the real world now for you
I Kiss The Bottle,
I Shoulda Been Kissing You.
The best thing about Blake is his ability to write lyrics so many people can relate to, in such a deep way.
This hits alot closer to home than I´d care to admit sober.
Me too
I hope you’re ok now. I’ve been living this song for 4 years. It’s hard to change.
@@brookegraham1552 I found a beautiful gf whose one of us. She's bone dry, always has been.
I’ve been listening to the Lucero cover of this song for years and never knew it was an original Jawbreaker song until now. I’m glad I found this.
My wife and I, we are in separation because of my drinking problem. There are days when this song almost make my cry. She is my best friend and I miss her dearly.
Blake Schwartzenbach's delivery on this song is absolutely perfect. As raw as everything he's describing. Timeless song, one of my favourites.
one of the greatest songs ever , and covered by so many bands because its that great , song writing at its finest
Fuck, dude. I'm sober over a year now, but this song still hits like a truck
this is one the best songs ever wrote, by one of the best bands ever.
Yes indeed
Written*
Jawbreaker were a great band, a totally unique mix of punk rock hardness and Springsteen/Tom Waits style slice-of-life weariness. And nobody, *NOBODY* ever had a voice quite like Blake's.
Lyrically, poetically and literature wise this is the most brilliant song. Blake is a poets poet.
yes. have u heard the acoustic from Rise Against's singer?
He is a college English professor around where I live... we used to skate the rails there, they're a famous spot.. the city college of new york
@@atomicman2307 I just saw them live in Portland a few nights ago. I think it's cool they grew up here in oregon
This was the last song they recorded before Blake went in for throat surgery.
Jawbreaker wish I could have seen you guys last year . Vermillion SD #Sioux city IA area
i'm overwhelmed how jawbreaker can be so influential in my life...it's really the only reason i can pull on from all this shit i've been feeling and i'm disappointed how they go unrecongnized from so heart felt lyrics
it gets loneliest at night
down at the liquor store
beneath the neon sky
our moonlight
six A.M., the floor comes alive with lice
the pan's dried up so tight
with hardened beans
we're hungry
so I lean on you sometimes
just to see you're still there
your feet can't take the weight of one
much less two
we hit concrete
how were we born into this mess?
i know i painted you a prettier picture, baby
we were run out on a rail
fell from the wagon to the night train
i kissed the bottle
i should've been kissing you
you wake up to an empty night
with tears for two
cigarettes, they fill the gaps
in our empty days
in our broken teeth
we're jonesing
say mister, can you spare a dime?
some change could make a change
could buy some time
some freedom
or an ear to hear my story
it's all i've got
my fiction beats the hell out of my truth
a palm upturned burnt blue
don't call it sunburn
you've been shaking on the job
just one drink ahead of your past
there's a white light coming up
you draw the blinds, hoping it'll pass
i kissed the bottle
i should've been kissing you
you wake up to an empty night
with tears for two
This is the greatest song of all time. No song has ever captured alcoholism like this one.
this hubbub about "good singers" reminds me of a david byrne quote: "the better a singer's voice, the harder it is to believe what they're saying." i remember steve malkmus also saying something to that extent.
Some songs are so perfect it doesn't matter how well you try to cover them, I don't care what you do, or who you do it with, it will never be better than the original.
This song never gets old, timeless.
Jawbreaker is such a phenomenal group. Great, great song.
I kissed the bottle
I should've been kissing you
You wake up to an empty night
With tears for two
Love the guitar tone
In memory of Stephen Lee Collins II.
I was listening to this when it was first released. Recorded it on cassette off the radio. We had an experimental radio station that played weird shit. I think the show was called " the soundtrack to my life" it was a hour program put on by some dj forgot his name now.
"Song later covered -- badly -- by the Foo Fighters." Lol, completely agree.
I have the biggest crush on Blake's voice. Oh my goodness.
I love this! I met Blake on Saturday and have been nostalgic ever since. His new band The Forgetters with the former drummer from Against Me! is very reminiscent of early Jawbreaker. This conjures such memories in me it's amazing. Jawbreaker lives in my heart!
Literally, this takes me back to my teenage yrs, & still a lot remains the same. Makes me sad....
The Foo Fighters' cover is a good cover, in fact it's one of the best I've heard in a while. But Blake's vocals in this are god damn beautiful. Hearing the lyrics sung through his even raspier voice than usual voice is a perfect match that the Foo Fighters couldn't match
Lucero do a damn good job of making it their own. Like Hank III, it's not country but it's good! How, oh because they are covering JAWBREAKER!
Goosebumps. Every time. One of the best songs ever written.
people are just too used to the clean, perfect sound every little band has now.
i personally like this voice and version the best. it just sounds more real than any fall out boy song released.
It's called live bands. Shows and concerts are two different things imo
living abroad and listening to Jawbreaker really makes me miss the bay area.
there isnt a song i dont love by this band. thank life for such music
later covered un-badly by Lucero
this will always be one of my favorites
John Yates always releasing good stuff...... Good times of ALLIED RECORDINGS
i could just be really really high but the intro reminds me of mixtape by brand new. maybe its just the way its structured. alternate picking riff followed by full band half time guitar, bass, drums, then followed up with a palm muted section. again i could just be really stoned.
Hart as beats
over 20 years later and this music still is relevant and osm. I wasn't even born when this album came out. I wish i could've seen the scene then
saw em twice in 95. best.
just found this song a week or so ago, ive been listening to it almost nonstop.... and i did it the old and normal way, reading random articles on wikipedia
best song ever
YES! It is.
I fucking love true DIY punk rock... and one band are pushing that ethos and a Jawbreaker-esque sound today- search up 'Prisoner' by HeadAche, you won't regret it!!
no song makes me cry more consistently
I love Lucero's version, but nothing will top the original. Pure classic.
I love both!
Lucero’s cover destroys the original.
@@brianezell5790 Tim Mcilrath does an amazing version during a SiriusXM in studio set. Check that one out.
@@brianezell5790You're delusional 😂
great band, thnxxx for posting :)))
A great song is a great song. Period. No further explanation needed. His voice will never sound like this again. Enjoy it for what it is. I am old enough to know that happiness is just a moment.
And a very fleeting moment it is, well said!!!
I just saw this live last night. God damn.
thanks for posting this up, need to dig out the vinyl.
Such a great song!
I LOVE 90'S RECORD
Gives me a reason to keep goin. Dis life shit hard
Genius level...this song...thanks
Returning to this track for the first time in months. It's been too long.
Been listening to this song for 20 years and I aways thought it was "just one TRICK ahead of your past" haha!
Always awesome..
An all-time favourite.
One of the best bands ever!
there's something about this song, the recording and how it meshes with the pure rawness of their sound blended with Blake's rough vocals that make it untouchable as far as covers are concerned. I heard the Foo's cover, and I give them props for covering it, but its just too polished. It lacks the heart of the original. Jawbreaker were in a class of their own. You can always take more from them each time you listen to them. They are so missed.
Something magical happens when you play this song at 3:30 in the morning, writing a term paper.
a song that knew my future before i was even born.
his voice in this song is so freaking awesome!
Hearing this song again makes me whish I was a teenager again!
been jonesing for this song
haha i just started A.A. a few weeks back so I threw this song on... can't wait 'till my sobriety brings me to a point of clarity when I can make peace with the fact my addiction wasn't killing me half as much as it was killing my girlfriend... stay strong man.
How are ya now
Jawbreaker, Jawbox, Fugazi, Superchunck these bands started the hole emo movement! Cant forget about Screeching weasel anthem for a new tomorrow prolly my most fav album. and lets not forget FIFTEEN ? RIP Lucky : (
Sunny Day Real Estate?
Russell Lowe Cap'n jazz
Don’t forget Seaweed and Samiam.
Husker du, dag nasty,...
Dag nasty was a good pick...wig out of denkos for sure
fucked it up for myself. I miss you Jordan.
This song is class!!!
I miss covering this with my band :(
He was doing a project called forgetters, which was pretty Jawbreaker-esque. They played a lot in the northeast in 2009 and 2010 and self-released a double 7" that is awesome. You can find it on eMusic and iTunes. The bassist quit last fall after a European tour. Not sure if they've officially disbanded, but I hope not.
Man, your story really moved me. I've lost a bunch of people lately and it's a strange feeling. As a grown up punk rocker... shit gets real.
i think it's really a q of what stands the test of time. lots of great bands w 'bad' vocals / many great bands w cult followings / plenty of one-hit wonders selling millions only to be forgotten.
A comp. album called 'Music For The Proletariat', Allied Recordings, 1993.
When that cord hits....
thought it was an instrumental...rock/punk serge...but the weak to an awesome voice..love you guys
i can so relate to this song.
Happy Jawbreaker day 2013
this song has heal me.
Best jawbreaker song.
I love everything
Timeless...
love it always will
under a neon sky...our moonlight
Damn, this is good. I was alive in 1992, why didn't I hear it then.
I picture Oscar the grouch singing this.
Wait, he *isn't* singing it?!
The thought of Oscar hitting the bottle has me laughing.
Lying in a bedsit in Croydon, London and hearing this in '98. Fucking rocked me.
Brendan Kelly from the Lawrence arms covered this
i love jawbreaker and i love lucero. this song is just written that well...
The best of punk rock
Good song, I can relate.
Yeah, I love the vocals on this song. Perfection. For some reason I like the Foo Fighters version too, however definitely not the same.
immense
@shazugin yeah same, the distortion, just reminds me of classic punk. I love it
Best song ever
I think it's magical that there are people young enough to be writing term papers who are into Jawbreaker. Fist bump.
I love this band so fucking much, unfun is probably my favorite album by any band ever
FUCK YES! This is like the best update to a 70s Punk I've ever heard.
Ever heard of Lucid Rivers?
Well done..
