- I think I finally kept up with Sam in agate spotting. We both agreed that I found the best one in four days of hunting. Of course we also found lots of other great rocks too.

- KINGSLEY NORTH -
Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

- THE ROCK SHED -
I buy a lot of lapidary supplies from The Rock Shed. I don't make money from your purchases there, but they have good prices and good service. This is where I buy my finer grits and polish.

Rob finds the personalities in the rocks he and Sam find and can even get them talking! Rock Whisperer. 😄
I hear rocks talking to me all the time. Is that weird?
@@MichiganRocks Um, maybe a little? 😬
@@gwynnfarrell1856 I was just kidding.
@@MichiganRocks Yes, fun isn't it? 😄
Can't tell you how much I love going on your rock hunting adventures with you, one of my favorite channels!
Thanks, Dan!
A great day our, good to see you both found some nice rocks. And with a special guest appearance from Mr Rock, well that made the day complete..😂😂 thanks for sharing
Mr. Rock is an attention hog.
Everything's better with a little humor baked in.
Love that Omar Sam found, so cool! Listening to the waves coming in and out is so relaxing. Great hunt! 😃❤️❤️
Sam is always picking up fun Omars. I did like that crescent shaped one.
That was an awesome adventure. You both found so many agates and other cool rocks. Thanks for sharing 👍
Wow wow wow!!! A beach full of beauties! Nice finds guys❤❤
Wow. I actually liked the look of the landscape with the fog - beautiful finds! Thanks for taking is along virtually ❤
An both pairs of boots can squeak!
The fog was beautiful, although a nice sunny day would have been acceptable too.
The agate at 17:28 is AMAZING! Thank you for taking us along on another great hunt!
Thanks as always for sharing your adventure and your finds! I’m curious if you tumble all of you agate finds, and if you keep the “m-agates” or leave behind? Also do you and Sam have a favorite region to hunt - Western UP, Eastern UP, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, etc?
I don't tumble any of my agates. I take some magates home, but not all of them. I'd say I tend to take them home though. As time goes on, I have been taking fewer and fewer home. If they are smoothish and look like they'll tumble, I bring them home. If they're agatey, but kind of ugly or rough, I leave them on the beach. One of these days, I need to go through all of my previous agate finds and pull out all the magates and tumble them.
Sam and I have always gone to the eastern U.P. This year I asked if he wanted to go to the Keweenaw instead, but he wanted to go back to the same places we always go. He has never hunted rocks in the Keweenaw. Maybe next year, I'll insist that we go somewhere else. Sam and I live in Alpena, so Sam also hunts Lake Huron, but he and his girlfriend usually go without me.
Oh boy those are some of the nicest rocks. You guys scored!!!
It was a very good day.
WOW WOW WOW !!!!! Rob ,Sam you both got lots of very beautiful rocks
It was a good day.
Great finds! I think the agates are great, but I really like the omars and the mixture 19:17. the layered ones
That one at 19:17 was cool, but the agates are the big prizes for Sam and me. You probably knew that though.
Moss agate
Good hunt for both of u👍.so beautiful agates and other stones.i really like the mysyery rocks💕.have u ever try to tumbler, cut or polish those?would be interesting to c
Yes, I have cut a few and both Sam and I have tumbled them. They really stand out on the beach. The problem is that most of them have a layer that's softer than the rest of the rock. If you can find one without that mineral they tumble well.
That is one of the golden rules of rockhounding; the harder to get to the spot, the greater the reward. The others are "always go after the rain" and "there's always room for one more rock".
On the Great Lakes, it's "go after a big wind storm" or "Go after the ice melts".
We have a town in Manitoba called Gladstone. They have a big statue called Happy Rock. It has a top hat and arms and legs.
We have a Gladstone in Michigan, too. I don't know if they have big, happy rock though. I think that might be unique to your Gladstone. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Happy_Rock
Awesome finds today guys
15:33 Another Bloodstone. Kyle found one recently. A greyish-green Jasper with blotches of red Jasper
Wow! You and Sam found some beautiful agates!!! SWEET! 😊
Your videos are so relaxing! Thanks 🙏
Glad you like them!
I'm considering going to that location while on vacation in September. Will a F-150 get through that road? How long is the drive (the bad part)?
The bad part might be a mile or so, maybe longer. It's hard to tell because you're going so slow it seems longer. I have no idea if your truck will get through. You definitely need four wheel drive. My Jeep was working hard, but didn't have any real problems.
I picked up an older Jeep I will have to get back there. I was there last year with an old pickup truck. We found plenty. There was nobody there which is what you want. You guys did well. That’s a nice location 😊
That's a fun road to drive. I was nervous the first year becases I had never driven over that much soft sand. Now I bring an air compressor so I can air down my tires if I have a problem. So far, no problems.
Yes this Jeep is good for sand I can raise the vehicle up and down with a push of a button 😊
Wowzers. .some really cool rocks and agates.💜🤗 thank younfor sharung.
Please never stop the beach hunts! It's so fun to watch for those of us too far away to go all the time.
I don't plan to stop.
I think Sam has agate radar.
I thought I did a fairly good job keeping up with him that day, but I agree, he really has a good eye for them.
I know where you went lol. You guys cleaned house! Great video.
This location wasn't supposed to be a secret. We took the Coast Guard Line Road.
@@Fly2308 I don't think the beach has a name. It's near the end of the Coast Guard Line Road.
@@MichiganRocks yep, i know it wasn't a secret, but pretty much only 1 road west of GM. Great spot
@@superscottorama This is east of Grand Marais.

Very nice ! i love ur videos
The stones that look like rhodinite..what are those really? 😮
Can you give me a time stamp for one of the rocks you're talking about? I can't think of any rocks that look like rhodonite in this video.
How do I get to this beach? Anyone know where this is?
It's just west of the mouth of the Two Hearted River. This fall I walked to the same location from the Two Hearted River campground.
Nice agate Sam!
Loved this hunt. It was very nice listening to the waves and good finds.
Hey Rob I am currently in Marquette, and I was wondering what are some good beaches for rocks?
I go to Marquette quite a bit, but I don't do a lot of rock hunting there. The only beach I have hunted was just north of Picnic Rocks/Shiras Park, right in Marquette. Here's the video: ua-cam.com/video/YNrhKHjalTo/v-deo.html
Thank for the location we found a few agates and lots of magates
Ah, perfect foggy morning video ❤
Some really nice finds this trip, guys! ❤
Hello. Wally from Belleville Ontario Canada. Just bought a dual tumbler from Leegol Electric. It has some kind of nut shells to use. Should I use them in other stages or just throw it away?
I have used corn cob media to tumble Petoskey Stones, but in a vibratory tumbler. You could maybe use them for something like that down the road sometime. Check to see if they have grit in them already or if they're just plain nut shells. You wouldn't want to use them if they have grit in them. They're probably intended for polishing metal. A lot of people use tumblers to clean up brass shell casings before reloading them.
@@MichiganRocks Thank you. Your Awesome. I learn so much from you. Hope you don't mind my questions, as I am a newbie . Thank You
@@wallypaige8496 I don't mind questions at all.
What a lot of beautiful stuff you guys found
Preordered Tumbling Rocks for the CHAMP.
O boy you guys were literally rocking on this episode! Sam really has a nag for agates 😊 love this beach too sadly it’s eroding badly though 😞
Sam does have an eye for agates, but I thought I kept up pretty well this time.
I don't think it has a name, but it's near the end of the Coast Guard Line Road.
@@MichiganRocks of course you did my dear friend and I’m so happy for you 💖
Wow congrats on a great day and that one agate in particular was amazing, hope we get to see it shined up someday soon.
I don't polish my agates, I just keep them as I found them. You'll get to see the other rocks tumbled some day though.
LOL !!!! @ the "Guy Screaming" rock .. .. .. xD
I have finally started my lake Superior vacation. Today my granddaughter and I stopped at Marquette, what beautiful colored rocks, and the water is so clear, we did pick up some unusually colored green rocks, plus 8 pieces of beach glass, so many to pick from, Monday we will be in Grand maria, plus we found the most beautiful green rocks, I can't wait to move along the coast to see what we can find, lake superior rocks are so bright 😅, these rocks are so different from lake Huron rocks, but we spent a lot of time there on the way up to the U P, nothing has disapointed us to far, wish me luck, that is my ambitious just one agate, thank for another great video 😊
Sounds like you're having a good trip, Mary. I'm glad you're finding some fun stuff.
I was just at that same beach! I started in Grand Marais. Rented a Can Am and off roaded to the Crisp point lighthouse then went over to the Two Hearted river and rock hunted for a bit. Honestly your channel helped me learn how to rock hunt, thanks for everything man!
That's a fun trail to the beach, isn't it?
I did not realize Michigan temps were that cold this time of year.....HOT here in Indiana 🙂
This was June 14, but it's not always that cold at that time. It's unpredictable.
I was thinking that looked like the road to Crisp Point lighthouse…..
We have greywacke here in NZ too, and glaciers....😂
Would you recommend vacationing on the UP in June?
It depends on what you consider a vacation. Bugs are usually really bad in June, and the weather is unpredictable. Sam and I were up there for four days and I don't think it got over about 52°. It was also cloudy all but the last day. The last day it was really windy, so even though the sun popped out a little, it was still really cold. Even though that's how it can be, we go back every June as soon as school gets out.
@@MichiganRocks We have a motorcycle group that meets somewhere in the U.S. every June, and they've picked the UP for next year. I think we're gonna skip it and go to Florida instead.
@@TheShootinStar I would go to the U.P. There are some beautiful places up there. You just can't be a wimp about bugs and weather.
Agate mother load for sure! Fun trip, thx!
No cell service…. My favorite places to be.
I found a hair from thr leg of a roach in my tumbler'😮
18:25 I call those SKUNKSTONE!!! I love the ones that have Seam Agate making the middle. I don't find many keepers, but they make awesome contrasting in water jars. Nice find.
Skunkstone is a great name for that one!
I would have to bring a wagon to haul my rock’s until I learn what’s what. I think every rock is so beautiful to me and I’d have trouble picking just a bucket full of them. Thank you for a great video. I just watched your other video of the after tumbling video. They look awesome. From tn
I think most people bring home way too many rocks at first. I have learned not to do that.
Great finds! That one with banding all around was a huge score!
I sure thought so. That was the best one of the whole trip for me.
I never get tired of these hunts. You guys really cleaned up on the agates that day. It’s crazy but all of the agates I have found in Lake Michigan I have never realized that they were agates until I got home and were just going through my finds.
Have you found a lot in Lake Michigan? I know they can be found there, but I thought they were pretty rare.
@@MichiganRocks Yes they’re pretty rare and generally not very big. I do have a really nice larger one that just completed stage one of tumbling. I didn’t tumble it enough to completely remove all the flaws because i was afraid I’d loose a lot of the agate. I’ll send you a picture in about a month when it’s finished.
@@davidhile5363 I think that's the way to go with Lakers.
Hey Rob, wanted to ask you how far south have you heard of michigan pudding stones? I found one today in whitewater river, Richmond Indiana. 460 miles south of Alpena and I am 220 miles south of lake michigan. Blew my mind.
I think they can be found pretty far south. I talked to a guy a few years ago who told me that he finds a lot of them in northern Indiana. You're a lot farther south, though.
13:43 when you were doing the flowers that lemon quartz was my first thought. Lol
Mine too, but the yellow is only skin deep.
Very beautiful rocks. Love your videos and channel. Liked. From Jordan
Thanks!
NICE… Agates! Jealous!!
We're going to be at Door County, WI next fall and I'd so love to find some agates. Can you tell me the best place to search for them? Thanks!
I have mostly looked in the eastern U.P. and in the Keweenaw peninsula. I have also been to Minnesota a couple times. I have never hunted agates in Wisconsin.
Willing to trade Lake Superior agates we’ve found for petoskey stones you’ve found. Tumbled or untumbled. We would rather find some ourselves but the farthest we can go is the upper peninsula 😢
That's a very generous offer, but I don't really do much trading or selling of rocks.
Ok so now I'm going to have to buy a tumbler because of you. I live in Muskegon and like to go up to the UP once a year or so. We would like to know what you think a good first tumbler is? What other things do I need besides Grit?
I havent gone through every video you have so sorry if you've already touched on this topic. Thank you advance Sir.
Go Blue
I like Lortone rotary tumblers. My first one was a Lortone 33B and I think that was a very good decision. You'll need grit, rocks, a colander and some measuring spoons from the dollar store. If you're rinsing rocks inside, you'll need a bucket too. You should watch one of my tumbling videos to see if I forgot anything. You'll also have a better idea of the procedure before you buy something.
Getting ready to visit a friend that lives in the Lakeport MI area on Huron. What rocks might I find there? (Bought a UV flashlight)😊
That area has good rocks, but there are a lot of people in that area so they get over picked. You can find Petoskey Stones, puddingstones, and other rocks. Here's a video: ua-cam.com/video/5EmnEpwBhkY/v-deo.html
If you were to rock hounding in the Door County, WI area, where's the best spot? Thank you, love your videos!
I have never hunted rocks in Wisconsin, so I can't help you out. Sorry.
🐞Do those Omar rocks take any degree of polishing? Thanks. 🐞
I did a video about rocks that won't polish well and I included an omar. The reason I included the omar is because I knew the inside of the hole wouldn't polish. The rest of the rock I was unsure about, but it actually did pretty well. Here's the video if you want to see it for yourself. ua-cam.com/video/z5S4nwYSOBE/v-deo.html
Is this a secret place 😜
No, it's just hard to explain exactly where it is and it's hard to get there. You could walk her from the Mouth of the Two Hearted River. It's to the west.
thanks for replying 😄@@MichiganRocks
Rob, another great video and rock hunt. You mentioned that you don’t tumble any of your agates. Do you polish them on your cab, or just leave them as is? I would imagine some of the small ones are tough to handle but above a certain size, may work fine. I bought some rough agates from Kingsley N and tumbled a couple to test and I think I would rather try to polish them on my cab if they are not too small. Thanks as always for the great video!
I just leave them as is. Actually, I'm starting to oil them with mineral oil. I really need to go through my small collection and remove the magates and display the nice agates somewhere.
You found some really cool rocks!
Mother Nature's tumbler!
Rob- check out Black River harbor north of Bessemer. Very awesome beach with rocks and drift wood galore 😉
I was going to go there this spring, but chose to go to Little Girl's Point instead. I was originally going to camp at one place and hit both places in a day, but they weren't open for camping in early May.
😂mr happy rock made me laugh
Hello I and my husband found many rocks..that it looks like a natural gemstone..hope someone will chat me about what we really gemstone they are.. because we kept all we found,.we had lots of rocks we kept..we hope someone will help us to identify all of those. Hope to hear you soon.
I'm not very good at identifying rocks. Try finding a Facebook group of rockhounds from your area. Sometimes you can post pictures of your rocks and people will help you identify them.
Epic day!! Do you two ever trade finds when they are favorite mismatches??
Sometimes I give Sam a rock or he gives me one.
I TOLD you my grandmother and I used to find pudding near Grand Marais, years ago!😂
You did, and I had a hard time believing it. Now I know better.
Wow so many beautiful agates!! Good hunt!! Thanks for sharing your adventures!!

What's that stone (bottom, middle) at 1:53 called? I would have grabbed that.
I'm not sure if you're kidding or not. There were a lot of rocks in the bottom middle at that time.
Great hunt! Sam’s the perfect buddy…not put off by iffy weather.
Yep, Sam was not raised to be a wimp. He's not afraid of a little discomfort.
🙋♀️❤ I had to laugh at your happy little rock! I thought I was the only profound visionary!
Nice finds. Very enjoyable. Thanks, Suzy
Wonderfully fun time rock hunting. You both have some great times rock hunting.
Cool beans ❤️✌🏼
So do you ever check for tide heights before you go hunting at a specific beach? Or is it more of a strong wind that brings the waves high up on the beach? I remember a while back in your videos when you were out with your kayak, and you mentioned an island that would be covered with water at times, while other times you could walk to the island along a spit.
There aren't tides on the Great Lakes, at least not anything that's noticeable. I think I was probably referring to the overall height of the lake when I was talking about islands being more or less covered by water. Lake Superior is high this year. A few years ago, Lake Huron was very high and now it's much lower. These are differences that change over months or years, not daily.
@@MichiganRocks I should have looked it up first. I now remember learning 60 years ago as a kid that there were no tides in the Great Lakes. I just went to the NOAA website and discovered a new word, seiche, that describes wave heights on lakes. Cool.
@@darkwood777 Yep, that's a thing, but I don't know if I've ever witnessed it, or at least noticed it.
“It’s a maggot at best, maybe it’s an agate”
No respect I tell you, no respect.
Not a maggot, a magate. It's my term for a maybe-agate. I still may be showing a lack of respect though.
Do you guys ever find arrowheads? great video.
Not yet.
I liked Mr Rock.
I love rocks and hunting for them. Thanks for the video.
Wow. Great day picking rocks!
Yep, it was a great day.
Excelente muy bonitos colores ágata 😮😮😮
That agate at 17:28 might be the best one that I've seen on your channel.
That one is right up there. They're rare, but such a thrill when you find one.
I like stripey rocks and I have a Rubicon too 😉😊 -- Calculating gas costs... buckets, boxes, and camping essentials... I like agates but I'm not an agate snob. I am serious! 😄
The Jeep is not very economical to drive. Probably something to do with it being shaped like a box, not very aerodynamic.
@@MichiganRocks that is true. Mine is green so it also attracts bugs, that think it’s a fresh new green leaf. 💚🧚🏻🫣😝😆
Where do the holes drilled into the omar come from?
There was a softer mineral that weathered out. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omarolluk
What rufff rufff
Nice.
What are the smooth brown and dark brown rocks?
I'm not sure what rocks you're referring to. The black ones are probably mostly basalt and graywacke.
I would love to get over to the Eastern UP. The LSA in that area typically has more bright, bold, and unique colors.
I think we have more variety of colors than the ones in Minnesota.
@MichiganRocks I would agree. The Keweenaw Peninsula is known for the unique colors in LSA.
Why?
What's the largest agate you have found to date?
It's not the prettiest agate ever, but my biggest was a four pound pseudomorph agate. ua-cam.com/video/dTCUH-4z298/v-deo.html

Petrified wood, neat fact, all petrified wood is fossilized, but not all fossilized wood is petrified
Yes, I believe fossils have to be something like 10,000 years old, but do not have to be turned to stone. Petrified means that it has become stone.
@@MichiganRocks not sure, but i think it's the other way round. I could be totally wrong but I wanna say 5 to 10,000 years to petrify, hundreds of thousands to fossilize if not longer. It always threw me off in science. Petrified is a type of fossil, but its not fossilized, weird.
