The last decade or so they had 250 horsepower, which isn’t crazy or anything but in the early 2000s that is quite good. With a short axle ratio, and the stiff suspension, they are surprisingly sporty

When I visited Clearwater, Florida back in 1996, I couldn't believe that there was actually a marked Dodge Diplomat still patrolling the streets. Three years ago, I saw a marked Ford Crown Victoria still in service here. I couldn't believe that either. But to see a CV just retiring from patrol now is astounding. It has to be a minimum of 12 years old. I don't think any police dept. years ago would have even seriously entertained the idea of having 10-12 year old cars in their fleets for patrol use.

Grand Isle, VT has a lot of old cruisers because they have a much bigger force in the summer and less in winter, so they have several cars that never see salt. I assume the summer officers work winters in ski towns.

They stopped making them because of poor side impact protection and because stability control was becoming mandatory. I'm sure if they made a new one it would be unibody and not as reliable. They were basically a truck car. The frames were the exact same from the 70s to the 2006 model year. 2006 they had some changes to the frame I believe

These Crown Vics are icons. Sadly no longer in production, but certainly not forgotten! The impact that this vehicle has had on the police industry and automotive industry in general is telling. Hearing those legendary 4.6L V8s roar when an officer was responding to a call was always thrilling but intimidating at the same time. I always liked the appearance of these vehicles as well. There is a reason why some are still in service today. They're cheaper to maintain and they can go on for hundreds of thousands of miles, with many of them being repurposed for other services or for private citizen use when retired as a police unit.

The Crown Vic P71 and the Caprice 9C1 (from the 80's-90's) will always be the ultimate cop cars. Easy to repair, simple, built like a tank, very reliable, fast and REALLY fun with their Rear Wheel Drive drive trains and V8's. I should know, I am the proud owner of a 2009 Crown Vic P71 myself, use it as my daily driver and love it as if it was my own child. It's just sad not to have them around patrolling the streets anymore.

Then we had a mix of ford explorers and Ford Taurus's, but now the whole fleet of about 6 vehicles is all newer Ford Explorers. It makes sense with the better technology and all wheel drive. I realize police departments can't use these cars forever, but I bet you anything this Crown Vic will outlive the Ford Explorer that's replacing it. They just don't have the longevity of the 4.6 V8 or the panther Platform in general. Some breakdown before 50,000 miles and have to be retired early. Ford is even it hot water over its reliability in regards to lemon law violations across the US. End of an era... Now we just have disposable tin cans on wheels with touch screens for dashboards. Sad.

They won’t either. I work in the shop for our county, explorers are being sent to auction at 5-6 years old. They are trashed, suspensions are junk, some have already had engines replaced. Chargers are good but you gotta watch the transmissions, they like to go South earlier then one would like. They are a LOT faster than Crown Victoria's but the are unibody so they are less rugged and are also a little bit smaller. If you can find a well taken care of one and you don't beat the hell out of it, they can be a good car to own.

Only way to get a new car that reliable now is either a Toyota hybrid or do what I did and seek out a nonturbo 4 cylinder with manual. (I think the Honda Civic Sport - not the Sport Touring or Si, those are turbos - and base Nissan Versa and VW Jetta are it although there might be a couple Canada-only models out there. All are compact to small, none are pursuit-certified and it's best to forget about jumping curbs or PIT maneuvers, but if you're looking for a personal car, that's the way to go. I drive a Panther vehicle and I love it! It's a 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis LS and they are some of the best cars to ever hit the road. They are made to be fleet vehicles so they run forever, the Town Car, the Crown Vic, etc. limos, taxis, police cars. If you can find a civilized owned version, it's KING! My 1999 has 78K miles which means it's just broken in. Canada actually played a key role in Panther platform vehicles. When the gas shortage of the late 70's mandated that we make more fuel efficient cars, the CAFE standards were implemented, but THESE Panthers had parts made in Windsor, Canada, just across the water from Detroit, so they were able to skirt those environmental regulations because they weren't "made in the USA." So they run like commercial vehicles. A true coup for any used car buyer. I took $15K used car shopping and put $11,600 back in the bank.

No it's not going to one
it's not even going to be auctioned, straight to junk yard or crushed, since 2021, the RCMP has stopped all decommissioned vehicle auction so people wouldn't try to "impersonate police" lol

I thought it was the coolest thing in the world. A world of crownvic pd vehicles to now these beasty sports vehicles.
The cops preferred the crown Vics though, more space they said 🤷🏻‍♂️

If it wasn't for the police, the Crown Vic probably wouldn't have been built past the late '90s. As far as the retail market goes, the Taurus was the big Ford sedan starting as soon as it was launched in '86.

Sad day, my first cruiser was a slick top Crown Vic that was on its way out. It was so old people would pass me thinking I was a citizens on patrol volunteer, but would freak out when they saw SHERIFF on the side. It was a very truck-like car and would go through mud and rough terrain.

Police cars are under contract to be repaired with oem parts ONLY. They may have unbelievable high mileage/kilometers but everything is maintained with quality parts. Not the Chinese knockoffs that breaks hours after installing.
