Can We Save This Junked ATSF 040 Loco from the Trash?

- I picked up this junked tyco 040 switcher diesel off ebay a few weeks ago and it turned out to not be a runner. I thought I'd have a go at trying to make it run again today and it turned out to have several problems which required attention. I'm overall very happy with this restoration.
I still have all my original vintage train sets and it includes that exact Santa Fe switcher that my mom bought me back in 1974. Still have it and it is in mint condition and still works perfectly.
Be nice to see one of these weathered and detailed.
Serenity is the word!
Absolutely.
great job on getting a classic back up & runing
Harrison back again with another great 100% UA-cam video content ever thank you for the best content ever
Thanks
@@SMTMainline your welcome
Really good repair, Harrison! Congrats on another runner!
Thanks!
Great restoration! I see you are getting the down town fixed up! It is looking good! Keep up the great work!👍
Thanks 👍
@@SMTMainline Yeah! No problem! Merry Christmas and happy holidays!
Good job in restoring it to running condition. 🙂
Hey SMT, great video, and merry Christmas!
Same onto you!
That reminds me, I should Windex my layout soon. Starting to get dusty. Great restoration!
Well done! That drive system is like one of the ones you would find on a Tyco Trolley. Very. Cool I actually had a diesel with dual motors of this type it was an F unit however the shell was shot so I salvaged the Brushes for spares . also how you did the wires is actually how they are done on a 4-6-2 pacifics . im sure all tycos were wired the same.
It's not a bad loco, It's nice that this style had five pole motors instead of the three poles found on power torques.
@@SMTMainline yes very true. I really wish they could make them again it would make the model railroad market come alive with variety
great video 🚄👍Merry Christmas to you and to everyone and Also a happy New year 🎄
Thank you!
Great video and nice little loco.
Thank you!
The master of fixing model trains
I don't know about that but thanks!
Wow that is a cool engine merry Christmas
Thanks, you too!
This is cool,u inspired me to buy my first lot off of eBay
That's nice, what kind did you get?
Love the restoration
Hey I have that same exact loco!
Nice
I just brought one of these yesterday!
Funny coincidence.
crap I was in the shower when this got uploaded.
I’m struggling to see what anyone would do with this information
@@smoothcriminal9698 ya know, I am to lol.
That Tyco model was from the early to mid 70s. I still have two...
Nice vid
Thanks
well i mean your a model railroad museum so yeah???
You're*
@@sethandotts3763 no one cares bro
Something like that, yeah.
@I hate black People Marci?
I have this same model, got it to run with a lot of care and effort, it's a smooth runner, but when you get up to speed, everyone at a trainshow last year heard it though the whole building and it was a decently sized one too over everyone talking and the trains themselves
The couplers are always a pain to replace, I know your pain, not to mention I see the horn snapped off on yours two, thats ironic.
I think this one needs a bit of oil and grease although I have yet to find out how to access the gear box.
@@SMTMainline If memory serves me right since I haven't needed to open up mine for a couple months ago, It should open up from the bottom, or on the motor casing, I can tell you once I manage or remember how to open it, for lubrication on mine, I used a brand called Goo-Gone, which works really well and the Railroad Club I'm in has a bottle of it, which is how I found out about it.
I'm glad if I helped you out with this dilemma.
Lol I meanwhile I just converted one of those exact Tyco switchers to DCC the other day, I even uploaded a small video of it!
This was my first HO train when I was a kid it came in a set
Also mine....came from italian LIMA
Well folks in today's video!
Yeah!
When it sounds like a coffee grinder, it's perfectly tuned. You dun well, Dr.Trainman, SMT. You dun well! John Kamloops, BC. Drink Quebec Maple.
Yep, super heathy and certainly *not* in need of oil. I will drink the Quebec Maple, they make it best!
@@SMTMainline Quebec Maple Coke, that is...
Merry Christmas SMT! I just got COVID so I missed thanksgiving with family bc of travel restrictions and now no Christmas with family bc of COVID
Merry Christmas. I'm sorry to hear about what happened, I hope you get better soon.
You should do a December 2020 locomotive tour
Maybe 2021?
@@SMTMainline yeah sure it would take a long time to get all of them out
I’m getting one of those for Christmas
Very nice.

Ive been waiting...so long for this video
Victory.
@@SMTMainline thanks i just could not figure out how to get the engine off
I found one of those at an antique store in a yellow and blue varient for 15 bucks with the guard rail piece
The yellow & blue color scheme was one used by Santa Fe for their switchers & road freight engines. I think Santa Fe painted its very first diesel switchers black.
Doesn't seem like a bad deal if it was a runner.
The blackness inside the shell suggests overheating. All that oil on commutator may have shortened the electrical circuit and caused smoldering.
Did the AT&SF ever have small diesel switcher locomotives like this? Did they ever have a paint scheme like this? Great job with the restoration as always Harrison!
Not that I'm aware of but the Santa fe had a lot of different locos and paint schemes throughout the years so they might have had something similar.
The Tyco is a fictional locomotive design. The Santa Fe though did have small numbers of industrial sized switchers including several GE 44 tonners, some Whitcombs and Plymouths, etc. Some of their oddballs though were just for working things like tie plants and weren't even standard gauge.
Tyco of course
Of corse!
Hey SMT Mainline! I have the EXACT locomotive and it doesnt run and it is missing a bogie frame
That's too bad. Do you plan to get it working?
I dont know.
The hospital of trains
Here is some info on this product. It was essentially a "toy train" offering back in the day. It's loosely based on Plymouth-built switchers more often designed for narrow gauge use. An example might be the Midwest Central's unit #14. (Google image search for pictures)

Interesting history. I recently purchased the transformers loco also included in that article although it has a power torque drive instead of the MU2.
I have one of these that needs a lot of work. Lol
If it's a power torque that would make sense.
Cool!!!
I have the same loco but in union Pacific colors, but it works ok
que hermosa maquina saludos
On my dads we just had to push them back in forth but then it’s started right up
Recently i got a silver diesel ho loco but, apparently the person at the store said that it "tried to move" when he tested it. The wiring looks fine. What do you think might be wrong?
Have you tried cleaning the wheels?
@@SMTMainline so. I tried that as well as cleaning my testing track and adding oil to the locomotive and now it runs very smoothly.
Great work. Do you still have those motors you purchased a while back to replace older ones? Have you installed any more in any other locomotives?
I still have them but I haven't installed them on any other locos. They are ready if I need to though.
That was my first model train too, circa 1974. Do they exist in real life, 1:1 scale? I've never seen one, even on You Tube.
I think similar locomotives exist but I don't think these were made to scale.
The best 8 letter word in model railroading.......starts with a S and ends with a Y.
Actually it’s one 8 letter word and 1 3 letter word
I like that.
i have a santa fe 0-6-0 and runs but i lost it so idk if it runs
Have you tested it?
@@SMTMainline no i haven't found it yet sadly but its a bachmann not a tyco.
Bonus
Has the older MU2 motor
Yeah, I was happy to discover that. The power torques aren't too hard to fix but they also aren't reliable.
Isn't that tyco mantua?
Way oversized for HO scale, but almost right for S scale.
Hey SMT what happened to your Road
It's getting redone.
Isn’t that a Plymouth Loco?
I have the Same train and it can run
Nice
Ik right
My friend has a tyco 040 loco but i’m trying to help him with it because it doesn’t work
Hi how can I clean the wheels on my train what can I use to do that
Rubbing alcohol and Q-tips usually get the job done unless you have a track cleaner.
Ok thank you
i have that
any good layout has a tyco 040 switcher :}
I agree 👍
hi ware do you git your trains
He gets them from a train store, hobby shop & ebay
What the other guy said but also antique stores and train shows.
If I do the same this can I fix my Santa Fe super chief
It might have a different problem though.
Yeah like the light turns on and the engine sounds like it is running but it doesn’t
What?! You removed all the patina aka realistic watering, people pay good money to make there engines look dirty. Its strange when one can just leave the locomotive on the shelf for a few decades!
Pretty dumb on my part, I will have to stick it on a shelf for 20 years to get it back lol.
@@SMTMainline It is possible that Santa Fe ran their switchers through the washer once in a while.
Is Life Like a Bad model train company cause im confused on its reputation
Life Like Proto trains were great. Regular life like trains were low quality although not the worst out there and they also were fairly cheap so I wouldn't expect too much of them. Good sets to get started with if you didn't have a ton to spend.
I have a Life Like version.... Runs like a scared rabbit as expected.
Not much work for the motor plus most of them have 3 poles which are quicker then 5 poles.
I've had one since 1978 runs like hell
train crash to day
Train derailment and evacuation in Custer Whatcom County
look this up
haw many burnt fingers
Not many.
Youve got a bad habit of walking off without turning your power off when checking engines... your gonna burn something up
You got the market cornered on used motors no one wants
That's the best part, people don't want junked engines so they can be found really cheap.
Any one else notice the little “text” on the thumbnail
My bad.
