  • In this episode, we compare some of the many similarities between Kurdish and Luri (Bakhtiari dialect), with Zehra and Baha as the Kurdish speakers representing both the Sorani and Kurmanji dialects, and Koorosh and Ali, as the Luri Bakhtiari speakers, comparing a list of words and sentences.
For any questions or suggestions for future episodes, or if you are interested in participating in a future video, please follow and contact me on Instagram: / bahadoralast
Kurdish and Luri are both classified as Western Iranian languages within the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family. It should be noted that both are divided into different dialects. In this video, both the Northern Kurdish (Kurmanji) and Central Kurdish (Sorani) dialects are represented.
The Kurdish language (Kurdî / کوردی) is mainly divided into three groups. Northern Kurdish (Kurmanji) is the largest, spoken in Turkey, Syria, northern Iraq, and northwest and northeast Iran. Central Kurdish (Sorani) is primarily spoken in Iraqi Kurdistan and the Iranian Kurdistan Province. Southern Kurdish (Pehlewani) is, for the most part, spoken in Kermanshah and Ilam provinces of Iran and in the Khanaqin district of eastern Iraq.
Literary Kurdish works have been written extensively in Kurmanji and Sorani, as well Pehlewani, Zaza, and Gorani (Hawrami), with many famous poets, such as Mela Huseynê Bateyî, Malaye Jaziri (Nîşanî), Faqi Tayran (Feqiyê Teyran), Ahmad Khani (Ehmedê Xanî‎), and Mahmud Bayazidi who wrote in the Kurmancî dialect; Nalî (نالی‎), Haji Qadir Koyi (Hacî Qadirî Koyî), Sheikh Riza Talabani (شێخ ڕەزای تاڵەبانی), Mahwi (مەحوی) who wrote in the Sorani dialect.
Luri (لٛۏری / لُرِی) is a Southwestern Iranian language and is considered the closest living language to Archaic and Middle Persian. It is divided into different dialects, Central Luri, Bakhtiari, and Southern Luri. In this video, we are focusing on the Bakhtiari (بختیاری) dialect. Northern Luri is primarily spoken in the Iranian province of Luristan, as well as parts of Hamadan, Ilam, Markazi provinces. Central Luri (Bakhtiari) is used by Bakhtiari people in Luristan, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province, significant regions of the Khuzestan province, and some parts of the Isfahan province. Southern Luri is spoken in the province of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, some parts of the provinces of Fars, Bushehr, and Khuzestan. It is important to note that while these are the main areas where Luri is spoken, there are significant communities residing in other parts of Iran.

      Luri is a Persian dialect.
“Luri is descendant of middle Persian Pahlavi. Luri (Northern Luri: لری, Southern Luri: لری) is a Southwestern Iranian language continuum spoken by the Lur people, an Iranian people native to Western Asia. The Luri dialects are descended from Middle Persian and are Central Luri, Bakhtiari,[3][5] and Southern Luri.[3][5] “

Thank you so much guys (specially you dear Bahador) for the amazing content.
I speak both Bakhtiari Luri and Persian. One of the things I found interesting is that although I was born in Masjed Soleyman, my pronunciations are actually way closer to Koorosh compared to Ali (a fellow Masjed Soleymani). The other thing I wanted to mention is that Ali’s view on the whole transition between different Iranic languages is something I’ve always believed in, maybe it’s a bit more clear for someone who speaks a language not belonging to the extreme ends of the spectrum, but somewhere in the middle. I (in my humble opinion) believe Luri speakers for example, can easily see the high level of similarity between Persian and Sorani Kurdish since their language is close to both, something the speakers of either of the respective languages may have a harder time realizing themselves.
One last thing I would like to mention is that we oftentimes forget the existence of different dialects and accents when it comes to Persian, since the language has a widely influential standardized form. But since I was born in the province of Khuzestan, I know many of the words mentioned here also exist in Khuzestani Persian (or are at least known by Khuzestani Persian speakers). Likewise the people of Bushehr, Fars, Hormozgan, Kerman, etc., are also familiar with these words to varying degrees. If we also bring these less thought of dialects and accents into consideration, we can easily spot the smooth transition from one end of the spectrum to the other. The Iranic connection is super strong.

Eg Zuzu v Zizi, Korom v Kuram. Similar differences between Kurdish and Persian to, Xanu v Xune, however as a Kurdish speaker I feel like Luri when spoken is closer to Kurdi than Farsi is to Kurdish. The most transitional dialect between Kurdi and Luri is probably Lakki, Lakki is Kurdish NW iranic but has much Luri influence. Laki also strangely features many similarities with Kurmanji and Zaza-Hawrami.

The Bakhtiyari Luri dialect is heavily Persianized. That is why it is so close to Modern Persian. Also Middle Persian did not descend from Old Persian that is boiler plate information fed from Wikipedia without any actual research. Middle Persian actually descends from a dialect of Parthian and was called Persian by the Sassanids once they established the empire after the Parthians. Both Middle Persian and Parthian were called Pahlavi for a reason! And old Persian is much more similar to Sanskrit than anything.

For example, in Kurdish, Talysh and Pamiri Rushani "white" is "spi", in Pashto it is "spin", in Persian - "sefid". The preservation of this word is associated with its sacred religious (Zoroastrian) meaning. Ethnicity and nation does not completely depend on having common language (I know in many cases language matters), but it depends on having common history, culture, geography and common political decision and destiny. Indian people speak more than 10 languages inside India, but they all belong to the Hindi nation. Jews speak many many different languages, but they see themselves one and all of them identify themselves as a part of so called Jewish nation. Same thing for Persians (Most of the Persians speak Dari Farsi language, but there are more than three more distinct languages in Pars province in Iran spoken by Persians (Bandari language, Larestani/Achomi language..)etc.
Same goes for Kurds, even though Luri language is linguistically distinct from Kurdish language (despite of having many things in common and similarities), both speakers of Kurdish and Luri share common origin, common history, common geography (both are the people of Zagros), same culture...

That Kurdish from Iraqi Kurdistan autonomous region, he speaks six different local and international languages but doesn’t know Arabic language while Kurdistan autonomous region is a part of Iraq. It’s back to the Kurdish revolution against Iraqi government in 1991 then the international community demarcated a red line between the Kurdistan Region and Iraq following the Iraqi government defeat and withdrawal from the region. So the Kurdish language had become the merely official state language of the region, and the region completely de-Arabized after approximately 70 years of conflict between Kurdish rebels and Iraqi government.
