He used it very effectively to bring depth to the characters he played. Whether the characters were cruel, arrogant, sophisticated, endearing, sensitive etc. he ALWAYS nailed it. Alan Rickman is such a great loss for the movie world and reading all about his wonderful personality as a human beeing makes ist even harder... miss him, although never knew him...strange, but I am sure I am not the only one one...
